Guess I only get around to posting journals around the time I finish a game....yup, it's been about a year.

Anyway, someone has to defend the Duke. Really, I don't know what everyone was expecting? It's a solid shooter with elements of Serious Sam and Half-Life. Throw in some adult fan service and you got yourself a decent game. The only complaint I can agree with right now is the ending. You call that a final boss? It was a bit anti-climactic.

All in all, I can't say there's anything wrong with this game except for the many many checkpoints along the way where you can't even be killed in transit.

      I give it an 8/10.

    • FallOut: NewVegas [First Impressions]

      omegawolf

I think the majority of our experience with FallOut began at #3 in the series. Given my age it's kind of shameful it didn't even occur to me there was a #1 and #2...and a Tactics! Do you have any idea how long this series has been alive and kicking?! Anyway, I'm a big fan of Oblivion (Elder Scrolls 4) so of course I immediately took to FallOut 3 like a cowboy on a saloon maid, which leads us to NewVegas ;) See what I did there?

Without spoiling, NewVegas is the first FallOut in the series where you or your ancestors haven't emerged from vaults, like some garden of eden untouched by the world, to find out that there's more to life on the other side of the mountain instead of a dropoff in to the great void. I can respect that. It's #4 in the series. Every vault has been opened by now. It's post apocalyptia. Get over it.

That being the first thing I noticed, what followed was a nice surprise. NewVegas incorporates many of the old game mechanics from the DOS days of FallOut! Actually, the very first FallOut's began in the Nevada territory. For fans of the original versions you'll notice a lot of congruency. NewVegas also brings back the gambling system and traits! Sorry, no 'bloody mess' trait but there is one I'll try my second go around called 'Wild Wasteland' which I'm sure will mean aleins or something.

Gameplay has changed a bit with the introduction of HardCore mode (which I'm doing) and modification to the crafting / repair and dammage systems. Food and water actually matter now so you need to manage fluid levels and hunger. On hardcore mode, stimpacks don't regenerate limbs (you need medical bags for that) and ammo now has weight! Guess I'll have to strategically think about what I want to carry now. The reputation system is also a lot more indepth with 3 different tiers between good, bad, and ugly! I'm not sure how that will all play out but I'm sure I'll have desperados on me for being too good before the end of the week. That part got left in from #3...just don't expect to see Talon Company operating in the great South-West.

That's it for now. I'll have more as I play but in the meantime, if you haven't played the original FallOut's, I HIGHLY recommend you do before playing NewVegas. At least play 1 & 2. Well worth your time.

    • PAX 2010 wrap

      omegawolf

It's only been...4 years since my last post. Guess there's no better time than the present to break that streak.
So as the title says, I attended Pax Prime this year not really knowing what to expect. I mean, sure, I'm a gamer of the 1st kind (pong), used to be hard core but pretty much turned casual over time. Just to put it in perspective, when I started playing Double Dragon in MAME on my laptop, my roommate said "What's that?". You know who you are ;) Saving grace roomie 2 joined me in the greatness that is Puzzle Bobble. You know who you are too :)
I arrived earlier than the rest of my party, leaving Indiana at 3:00am on Thursday and after 2 plane changes and a cab ride later, checked in to the hotel at 11am...12 hours of traveling. (Begin the amazing Jet Lag and sleep deprivation!). Hungry, dazed, and otherwise zombified, I shambled around in a 5 block radius taking in the Seattle cityscape. One thing I can say, cleanest and friendliest place I've every been! I mean really! Even the cabbies entertain you for your money (quite a bit of $$$ too). The remainder of my roommates were set to arrive at about 2am so after trying to hold it together and failing to play even the basest of web games, I hit the sack. Ok, RAMBO First Blood was on so I had to watch that first, but after quickly passed out. 2AM rolled around, the phone rang who knows how many times before I was alerted to the fact I had visitors that very much wanted to come in, did the meet and greet and immediately zonked out once more.
Got up at about 9am; might as well have been noon; stir crazy and ready to hit it up. Walked the 5 blocks to the convention center, got our lanyards, and proceeded in to the event. I'll edit the next line for the kiddies but the thoughts going through my head were along the lines of...holy...funky...chicken doodles...Batman. We'll go with that for now. Pretty much a schmorgesborge(sp) for the senses, a wholly flash bombing, concussion blasting trade show of games and industry. Now it was about this time my fellow group members, who've done this before, made a beeline for what I found out was the KeyNote address and subsequent panels, and where I, the dumb struck lag behind found myself lost like a 2 year old in the supermarket. Oh, and by the way, we totally brought down the AT&T cell towers. No iPhone calls or texts were being sent successfully.
So here I am left to my own accord in a sea of gamedom. Like the 2 year old in the supermarket, pretend it's now a candy store...where do you start?! What do you do?! Pretty much I spent the next few hours roaming like Kane (props if you get that reference). Do I get on line to play games or just check out the visuals of what's going on? At some point I'm pretty sure I went with, "whatever, $*%& it", but can't really remember making that decision since it's mostly a blur, and just bounced like a pinball from one booth to the next. Some of more primnent features were Fable III, Power Gig, Rockband III, some 3d generating software I don't remember, Deadspace 2, Star Wars, Fallout...just 1 spectacular display after another. But you know, as cool as all that was, it was the smaller developers that made the morning for me. In particular, there was Retrograde, Zombie Pirates, Spy Party, and World History II. Amidst all of the hype, there stood these miniscule displays with their creators eager to show off the fruits of their labor. I must have talked with these people for hours about their concepts and what they were trying to accomplish. I even bought the Zombie Pirate game off of the developer who dressed up as a pirate to sell the bit! If nothing else these people are committed :)
So after having enough of the trade room floor I started playing Elevator Action irl, and continued my journey. With nothing better to do and no idea where to go, I bumped in to a magic the gathering kyosk. Omegawolf the planeswalker found himself on a quest to search the convention center for puzzles and mystery to collect stamps on a card. One of the most frustrating 3 hours of my life. On the plus side it did give me a chance to interact with some of the fellow patrons as we all found ourselves in the same, insane boat. It really did set a tone about what the convention was about. Here you have tens of thousands of people with so much in common. It doesn't matter where you're from, age, race...it's just about having a goood time. I spent 30 minutes sitting at a table with 4 others working out our common word problem...it didn't help any that we were using the wrong letters but that wasn't the point!
I made it to one panel the entire convention. Wil Wheaton. Honestly, I never did care from him as Wesley Crusher (Sorry Wil!) but I have to say he's a very entertaining individual. He started with an anecdote about scrabble (http://blogs.laweekly.com/informer/wil-wheaton/triple-word-score-gaming-philo/) and followed it up with Q&A. All in all a great panel and my first time seeing Wil. My one regret is I didn't get online to ask for a question / favor. "Hi Wil. I ditched my best friend and came to PAX instead of celebrating his birthday. I didn't get him a gift yet but he idolizes you and would rock if you wouldn't mind wishing Evan a happy birthday?"
That's pretty much my convention experience. The other part was getting to know my online friends that I haven't met. I think I got them all correct here: Ashlee, Erin, Anthony, Hillary, Derek, and Joel. I spent more time with them than doing anything else. Grabbing coffe, comparing cat scratch scars, wandering aimlessly, and otherwise hanging out. Must do it again some time :)
I did take one video. Hillary and Derek got called on stage to perform in Power Gig. Here's the video post (on it's side...sorry!): www.slashtmp.iu.edu/public/download.php?FILE=jambraun/54286R0Dvfv

I actually got nothing more at the moment [smiley3] Just make sure to tune in to the podcasts some time and say hi (http://www.iugaming.com). Don't worry. We don't bite...we just ramble a lot and say strange things.

Ok, just because I'm a man of my word, here's me on Halloween:

      omegawolf454a347f0138d.jpg

So much for first impressions...nothing says "I'm the coolest and baddest mofo on RoosterTeeth, Phear me nooblets" like a halloween costume...you know who I'm talking about. Yes. That is me as Casear...Casesar that requires a shave and a haircut. For some reason my friends got the full length photos of me in my *ahemdress* and *achooskirt* so those will have to come in a bit. That's all on that for now.

No podcast tonight as we're getting ready for the IUCGC LanWar this weekend, but please, checkout the website at www.iugaming.com and listen to the past ones. If you happen to be in the Indiana region this weekend and happen to have your computer on you, please stop by smiley0.gif We have plenty of room for walkins.

    • A long, long, time ago...

      omegawolf

I had a journal entry. I used to do them every thursday, didn't I? Ah, couldan't keep that up. Anyway, Halloween everyone...those of you still watching me anyways.

What have I been up to....

Lets see; work has been killing me. Since my last journal post I've been promoted to head tech support manager (woohoo)...the raise in salary wasn't something to sneeze at either. We still do the podcasts every thursday night, 8pm est. You can check out www.iugaming.com for information on that. Also, we have our semi-annual IUCGC LanWar coming up this weekend. We still got walk-in space left if you're interested smiley8.gif

The watercooling project still hasn't been completed...mostly my fault. I just got the epiphany that if I were to just purchase 5/8" tubing, all my problems would go away...instead of trying to use adapters. Hopefully that works itself out before the weekend. I purchased a new computer case as well...with lots more room...and no complications smiley0.gif

So in recap...uhm...HI ALL!! Happy Halloween! Got me a party tonight where I'll be dressed as Caesar...home-made costume too. I sewed the bling! Yeah, I'm proud of me. Maybe we'll see about some pics. Anyway, later all. have a fun and safe night!

    • Things I learned

      omegawolf

Well, I WAS going to install my water cooling system this weekend but I learned a few things which temporarilly stopped me from moving forward.

      1) The camera I used to take some snap shots of this thing so that I could show you my frustration first hand...the USB broke on it so that means I'm off to Best Buy today to get one of those All-In-One card reader devices. *groan* Oh well...I need a haircut too.

      2) Once again, the design of the case has MESED ME UP! Pointing to the picture I took of the front bezel...wait a tick...YOU CAN"T SEE THE IMAGE BECAUSE MY CAMERA BROKE! Oh...sweet, sweet irony. Anyway, the upsidedown layout of the chassy coupled with the top bay positioning of my drives has cased my power cables to ride UP the case and BLOCK any insertion of devices in to the bays. This will make more sense with visuals, but sufice it to say I now know why those drive bays at the bottom of the bay are present. Which leads to problem 3:

      3) The drive bays at the bottom of the case smiley4.gif I can't get the $*%&^ panel back on to the case when the drives are present...which means more modding on my part to FORCE them to fit.

This is it people...it's either ME or this computer system. Stay tuned.

post-note: The weekend wasn't a total bust though. I did buy $500 worth of really nice shirts fro $70! I be stylin yo! smiley8.gif

number plate. no leaving it on that car dosnt really add any value, like i said its the last 3 letters that make it worth money which are MGC and MG is a make of car, C is the model so an MG owner would like it. The cars a renault so it adds no really value.

I'll see if I can get a shot of how this other system I built is setup. The USB and 1394 was a real pain in the ass because it connectors for those weren't a solid block like you usually find, they individually separate per wire. smiley4.gif

What 's the mobo and case model, and what front-x controls are you referring too? Onboard sound interface or the regular front panel reset, power buttons and LED's or is it something else?

    • Archanos

That system ain't no slouch. I like the specs, except of course for the case, as you mentioned, improper airflow for your purposes.

I'm going to have to tweak mine a little to get the airflow just right. Remove that damned mesh grill the case builders insist on using on all the freak'n fan ports. Though, I do like the honeycomb effect on the back 120mm on my case, and it proves to have enough air flow. Also install some intake and exhaust fans on the 1KW PSU. smiley0.gif If it works like it should, I'll do it to the other two 1KW PSU's I'm going to have to get for my future systems. smiley0.gif

Yeah...I'd much rather be playing games at this point but in the interest of being ABLE to play those games...I'll make a few sacrafices to get this thing kick ass.

Oh, I guarantee there's no airflow I forgot to mention in my rant that the front case controls are ON THE TOP! So aside from being arse backwards, there's no where for air to flow...the main reason I wanna go water cooled. I'll use arctic silver when I do mount the blocks but for now I'm using stock...and the gpu came pre-assembled in all its craptastic glory :-(

Sorry for eaves dropping on your conversation, but that was too funny.

Yeah, I'd get rid of that stock fan/heatsink and get some airflow in that case....

    • Archanos

Almost completely internal. If I can help it. One radiator and the reserviors will have to be external due to space constraints, but they will be covered and protected with cowling custom made for the system. smiley0.gif

Oh, yes. I forgot to mention that I might have to trim the front radiator count to two or three radiators, also due to space constraints of trying to fit four radiators, a somewhat large pump and plumbing in between the front of the case and the motherboard, with room enough to get at the motherboard to add in drives and tweak connections if needs be. Lot-o-planning still to be done in that area, but it is a minor detail considering everything else that's gone into this system.
