Today one of my lecturers had a presentation prepared for the class. He attatched a twitter feed to the bottom of it. Anyone who's spent more than ten minutes on the internet can likely take a guess at what followed.

Twenty minutes into the lecture and the tally stands at the following:

      >2 'first' posts

      >3 advertisements for porn sites

      >23 masturbation jokes

      >12 jokes about the lecturer

      >37 masturbation jokes about the lecturer

      >2 flame wars

      >1 very brief review of Toy Story 3

Surprisingly no racism. Guess we're equal opportunity sexual deviants. Kind of thing which makes you briefly ashamed to belong to the same species as them, though.

    • A wild journal appeared!

      paddymcgee

Holy shitbiscuits, I'm writing a journal entry. I suppose it would be pretty cocky of me to assume that anyone reads them?

No worries, I'm writing it anyway.

Well, well, what's new? Nothing, really, which is more than a little sad. Met a ton of new people over the past few months, then invariably forgot their names ten seconds later. Got my results back for the exams I took back in January. I did gooood.

I hear the endings for Mass Effect 3 got leaked recently. Don't know if it's genuine or not, but either way people are getting pretty predictably pissy presently. Possibly they're practically pitiless. Poor Bioware.

I also got around to having a look at Realm of the Mad God. Turned out to be a lot better than I expected. Destroying the domicile of a demented, discordant deity with a solid wall of 80 or so adventurers goes a surprisingly long way towards feeding my god complex. I recommend y'all take a gander.

Shops nowadays seem to have skewed priorities. So I can buy alcohol no bother, but a pre-owned copy of Reservoir Dogs is such serious business that I need ID? I'd never claim to be an expert in law, but I'm pretty sure it's supposed to be the other way around.

SOPA, PIPA, ACTA and other acronyms! I never made a post about them before, on this website or any other. I feel I should probably have jumped on that particular bandwagon when it still had momentum and the former two hadn't been shelved until times unknown. Oh, well; better late than never, I say. SOPA, PIPA and ACTA are bad. Say no, and stick it to the man, and stuff. Et cetera, ad tedium. I might normally be inclined to bullshit further, but I don't even savvy the lingo, so I think I'll leave it at that.

      So, to summarise:
o I'm not dead (though I'm no physician)
o Bioware fans mad. Bioware fans smash!
o 8-bit bullet hell definitely worth a fair go
o Shops think Tarantino is more damaging to society than alcohol (probably not wrong)
o Recycled arguments about bills from people who know better than me

...'cause a Comp Sci party don't stop. Until today, that is.

And so passes my first semester of uni. People were met, laughs were had and coursework was haphazardly thrown together last minute. Now if you'll all excuse me, I'm going to go make like a wave function and collapse.

At time of writing I'm about eight hours into the latest Elder Scrolls game. I wasn't originally going to buy it on release but yesterday I decided to fire up Oblivion again. One thing led to another and now I'm about £35 poorer and loving the hell out of my shiny new game, creepily mannequin-like NPCs notwithstanding.

It's not without its problems, of course. It still has the whole level scaling problem and there are times when I've been locked in conversations with NPCs and have had to reload from an earlier save to escape them, but if you liked Oblivion, you'll love this. I bought it for the PC, and am vaguely aware that there have been some UI complaints on that front, but I haven't really had any problems there. I'd like to think that means that I'm just brilliant enough to balance out unintuitive game design, but it's far more likely that my console-loving ass is just too ignorant to be slowed down by it.

I also like what they did with spellcasting. It's what I imagine the plasmids in Bioshock 2 would have been like if the changes were handled well.

Word of advice to any aspiring dragon-slayers, though? Do not listen to The Hobbit. Arrows do fuck all against those monsters.

"I once dug a pit and filled it with clouds....or was it clowns.... it doesn't matter, it didn't slow him down. But it really began to smell! Must have been clowns. Clouds don't smell, they taste of butter. And tears." Sheogorath, Oblivion

Today my maths lecturer was busy, so the module leader ended up teaching it instead. He's from Bristol, so I kept thinking the lecture was being dictated by Wheatley.

    • Some thoughts on Uni

      paddymcgee

I'm two weeks into uni now, so I thought I'd post some thoughts on what it's been like so far. It's been... different. It's a lot less structured than school or college. Focusing on a single subject is nice, though it's difficult to say with a straight face that I hadn't been doing that the past two years anyway.

I'm assuming it'll get more difficult as time goes on because at the moment it's insultingly easy. Particularly the maths module I took.

Another thing that I've started to notice is that all of my lecturers have either a really thick accent or some kind of verbal tic. I've started keeping tallies during lectures.

Hours are pretty horrendous in comparison to most courses', as far as I've been able to tell. Wednesday is the wonderful exception, where I only have a four hour day.

Overall pretty good, though. I have never been more grateful for the huge number of Greggs dotted around England. Their cheap rectangles of pure cholesterol are a Godsend.

"Ah. Well... I attended Juilliard... I'm a graduate of the Harvard business school. I travel quite extensively. I lived through the Black Plague and had a pretty good time during that. I've seen the Exorcist about a hundred and sixty-seven times, and it keeps getting funnier every single time I see it... not to mention the fact that you're talking to a dead guy... now what do you think? You think I'm qualified?" Betelgeuse, Beetlejuice

Well, though I've thouroughly enjoyed not doing much these past couple of months all good things must come to an end. Today I started Uni, though it would be fair to say I don't really start until next week. Induction week started today, in any case. It's something which I really wish I had more to say about. "I have a conviniently consistent timetable this semester about sums it up".

Also, physicists have not broken the speed of light. No one else seems to be saying it so I thought I might. The results were gathered by a single team using the same methods and equipment repeatedly. It was an error. We haven't broken the universe.

Well it's been at least a month since I've been on holiday. Time to go abroad again, I suppose.

I'm heading off to Estonia tomorrow, so I'll be gone about a week. See you all when I get back.

Y'see, if all court cases were settled by competition, the world would be a much more interesting place. Well done Notch for suggesting this.

Also, From Dust came out on the PC today. Since my house wasn't looted, I still have my computer, and so have been playing it. It's both fun and interesting, but the people you have to guide through the world are complete morons. Having said that, I'll take any amount of artificial stupidity it cares to throw at me if it means I can still jellify tsunamis.

It is a shame, but the Sheriffs' Duster is the closest thing we're gonna get. Maybe Bethesda will add it with another surprise DLC?

    • omega14

Yeah, it will. But I thought it would be boring to just make one generic shooter kinda guy, you know?

And the thing is, I did start to play through Bioshock, but I got Project Sylpheed right afterwords and got hooked on that (I LOVE flight sims). And then when I got Assassin's Creed, I started that too, but then I got Halo 3 for Christmas. So that's why I haven't finished either of those games yet.

but not my colour. My reasoning for this is that you shouldn't be proud of anything you didn't have a choice in, but rather just acknowledge and accept that that is the way things are.

      Well said.

And yeah, El Bandito should be up tomorrow. But I was thinking of limiting him to only using pistols (literally only pistols - no rifles, grenades, nothing but pistols), and then making a "commando/soldier" build dedicated to Delta/Omega squads. What do you think?

    • omega14

I'm pretty sure we can get a mustache on him, but I don't think there is anything that resembles a sombrero in Fallout 3. Except maybe this. (The hat, not the Duster.)

If by Bandito, you mean someone who likes to fill things with lots of holes using guns, then yes.

Hey! I saw your (first?) post in the Forum Games! It's a great place to dick around really (take that as you will); Especially when you get to chain with two or three people in three or four different threads at a time. But as long as you remember it's the Forum GAMES, you'll be fine. Just an FYI, but I emphasized the "games" part just cause I've seen people get negged (including myself). So if you don't understand that people are just kidding/dicking around, you shouldn't be there. I hope you enjoy your stay!

And, that's a line in which, yes, I was considering the actions taken when Fi was severely injured. And then I was considering the actions taken to....I wish I had the name on hand, the ARC trooper that had two assassin's following him. He was in True Colors, and Darman wound up killing the two assassin clones when he returned to the ARC's place.
