One of the many things I love (and dislike) about RWBY is the theories. Most of us, by now, must heard of MOST of them by now. From Qrow being Ruby's dad to Penny possibly getting duplicate replacement, it is just...nuts. However, there is one theory that I don't think people want to delve in more on: RAVEN'S REDEMPTION.
Many theories speculate that Raven might be a villain and that she is working for Salem as hinted by the mask she wears, the portal she emerged from when she saved Yang from Neo (the same portal that bug came from Cinder's hand when she extracted Amber's Fall Maiden abilities), and her viewpoint of the world that her brother, Qrow disagrees with. However, that may be the case, I have something that could add on to this particular theory. What if, 17 something years ago, Raven was forced into working for Salem. Salem must have threatened her that if she doesn't do what she says says, Salem will hunt down and kill everything Raven holds dear, that being Yang. Now what does Salem want her to do? Spy on Ozpin and his "Guardians." That is why Raven has been absent for MOST of Yang's life. She wants to protect her in every way. She wanted to be that mother Yang needed, but her actions and skills as a warrior cost her into making the worst decision ever.
There could also be an alternative to this though. While she maybe a spy for Salem, in secret, she is actually working for Ozpin. Gaining intel on both sides of this hidden war (which is no longer hidden I guess) that just erupted at the end of Volume 3. She is kind of like Snape from Harry Potter, where we all thought he was working for Voldy, when he was actually working for Dumbledore. Which leads me to believe that Raven was responsible for the death of Summer Rose. In order to gain (or regain cuz she probably betrayed Salem somehow) Salem's trust, Raven had to sacrifice her best friend, one of the many regrettable things she could ever do.
How do I know she is spy? Well, as shown at the end of Vol 3, Qrow literally turned into a Crow. Meaning Raven could possible do the same thing. She has been flying around in secret, trying to gain as much information she needs to give to both Ozpin and Salem. At the same time, she has secretly been keeping a watchful eye on Yang, hence a raven just randomly hanging outside of Yang's bedside window and just FLYS away.
She many not be a villain, but more like a anti-hero. She has the habit of making some shitty life choices. She lives a regrettable life and I hope in the future (possibly in the next Season of RWBY) Raven might officials walk out of the shadows, try to gain Yang's trust. Train Yang back into action (with or without the robot arm). I don't know, what do you think about all of this? Do you agree with me on Raven being the troubled anti-hero that can't lead an ordinary life as a Huntress? Let me know down below.
