      1 - Go to "Wikipedia." Hit “randomâ€Â
      or click en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Random
The first random wikipedia article you get is the name of your band.

2 - Go to "Random quotations"
      or click www.quotationspage.com/random.php3
The last four or five words of the very last quote of the page is the title of your first album.

3 - Go to flickr and click on “explore the last seven daysâ€Â
      or click www.flickr.com/explore/interesting/7days
Third picture, no matter what it is, will be your album cover.

    • Sansa e200 Series Playlist Help

      realdeal_55

      Hey, all,

I'm having some trouble putting a playlist onto my Sansa e200. It only recognizes *.plp files for playlists, and I've got the playlist formatted correctly for the file type:

      PLP PLAYLIST
      VERSION 1.20

      HARP, MUSIC\Barenaked Ladies\BNL IS ME\Barenaked Ladies Are Me\03 Sound Of Your Voice.mp3
      HARP, MUSIC\Barenaked Ladies\BNL IS ME\Barenaked Ladies Are Me\04 Easy.mp3
      HARP, MUSIC\Barenaked Ladies\BNL IS ME\Barenaked Ladies Are Me\06 Bull In A China Shop.mp3
      ...

However, when I try to drag-and-drop the playlist file onto my Sansa, it tells me that the file type isn't supported.
So, I converted the playlist file I created to *.m3u format, which my Sansa at least recognizes as being a playlist file, but tells me that I need to convert the file to a format it can handle. Which is, in theory, *,plp.

      Hence my trouble.
      Anybody have any insight?

      gordonlm1.jpg
      Artist: Barenaked Ladies
      Album: Gordon
      Genre: Rock â€" College/Folk

OK, so for those of you who missed it, Barenaked Ladies is my favourite band. They were bound to find a place on this list somewhere. And while I love all of BNL’s material, none of their albums seem to have that same, repeatable quality that Gordon does. Gordon is the first studio album released by the Ladies, and it is straight-up quality material. Classics, like “If I Had $1,000,000,†“Brian Wilson,†and “What a Good Boy,†stand out at timeless, while the rest of the comparatively lesser-known tracks provide a unique ambience for the whole album. Jazzy tracks like “Hello, City,†“I Love You, and “Box Set†still make me insist that a jazz album by BNL would be absolutely fantastic. Definitely check out this album if you ever get the chance to, because if you’re a fan of BNL, or of Canadian music in general, you will definitely enjoy this one.

      smashinglivepl2.jpg
      Artist: New Japan Philharmonic Orchestra
      Album: Smashing… Live!
      Genre: Videogame Soundtrack

Smashing… Live! marked a significant breakthrough in videogame music. Distributed only as a bonus to subscribers of Nintendo Power magazine, this album is an orchestral compilation of most of the music from the popular Nintendo 64 game, Super Smash Bros, Melee. Over time, however, this album became not so much attached to Melee as it did to Nintendo in general. The tracks on this CD are all classic themes from Nintendo games, including (but not limited to) Mario, Donkey Kong, The Legend of Zelda, Pokèmon, and F-Zero. This album orchestrated all of the classic themes that the die-hard fans have been waiting for forever, and created a worldwide passion for live videogame music; this concert was essentially the predecessor to the worldwide phenomenon known as Video Games Live. This album is recommended not only to videogame enthusiasts, but also to classical cats that are looking for something… a little different.

      cellargroovesd6.jpg
Artist: Tilden Webb Trio (feat. David Newman)
      Album: Cellar Groove
      Genre: Jazz â€" Cool Combo

Tilden Webb is a piano player from the Vancouver area, and he recorded this album live at a club there called The Cellar. What a great CD; straight from the top of the album, you get that jazz club ambiance, and it’s maintained throughout the whole disc. There’s an air of diversity on this album, with at least a couple of tracks with some cosmopolitan influences. There’s a really strong synergy in this trio, and I’d chalk at least some of that up to the fact that Tilden is married to his bass player, Jodi Proznick. You could definitely tell that something was going on while watching them live; they were both clinicians at the Keyano College Jazz festival a few years ago, and what a great couple of shows those were. Anyway, Cellar Groove was recorded with American saxophonist David Newman, who does an excellent job featuring on this album; one of the greats doing what they do best. It’s great stuff, and I highly recommend it to any jazz fan looking for something they’ve never heard before (plus a really wicked rendition of “A Night in Tunisia.â€Â)
(PS: While doing research for this album’s writeup, I discovered that David Newman actually passed away less than a month ago, on January 20th, 2009. He was 75.)

So, yeah. That’s the end of my list. Definitely check out all of this material if you ever get the chance to, because it’s all quality stuff. Just listen with an open mind, and you’ll love every minute of it.

I've gotta go fold laundry, so I'm out.

    • Brennan's Top Albums (Part 1)

      realdeal_55

I own a ton of CDs. All told, there are currently 181 in my collection. And while that might not seem like a lot to many of you, it strikes me as a particularly high number. And I’m damn proud of it. I love my music. I don’t care if I get weird looks from people when they go through my cases. They get bewildered when they flip through my collection of jazz, classical, rock, techno, bubble-gum pop, metal, and everything in between. It’s great.

As I go through my CDs, however, a handful of them stand out from the rest. A select group of eight albums I could listen to over and over again without getting bored. I could handle these ones on constant repeat for hours on end. And because I’m bored, and I need something to do while I wait for my laundry to dry, I’m going to share this list with you. In no particular order…

      timeoutol1.jpg
      Artist: The Dave Brubeck Quartet
      Album: Time Out
Genre: Jazz â€" Cool/West Coast Combo

A few years ago, I was told that there are three albums that all true jazz fans have to own in order for their collection to have any sort of relevance. One of them is Coltrane’s “Love Supreme,†another is Davis’ “Kind of Blue.†This is the third, and in my personal opinion, the most critical. This album redefined the way that jazz musicians looked at time (hence the name of the album). Classic, recognizable tunes like “Take Five†(in 5/4 time) and “Blue Rondo a la Turk†(in 9/8) intermingle freely and effectively with others, like “Kathy’s Waltz†and “Three To Get Ready.†I cannot even begin to describe the awesomeness of this album, and if you’re into jazz at all, you have to check this one out if you haven’t already.

      halo3soundtrackvu5.jpg
Artists: Martin O’Donnell and Michael Salvatori
      Album: Halo 3 (soundtrack)
      Genre: Videogame Soundtrack

Halo was probably the most important game of the new millennium. Everything about the game was revolutionary, from the graphics to the gameplay and storyline to the music. Now here we are, two editions later, and while many don’t agree that the “revolutionary†theme of Halo has stuck around, I would say that the music for the final instalment of Halo is as good (probably better) as its predecessors. This game continued the trend of bringing real-world relevance to videogame music. It’s interesting to listen to the whole album through and to hear how the musical ideas develop and resolve as the soundtrack moves through the storyline of Halo 3. The music has such a unique sound, not only because of the classic themes, but also because of how they have evolved from the first Halo game. Definitely check this out if you’re into the soundtrack scene.

      echoesinthenightsh3.jpg
      Artist: The Earl MacDonald 6
      Album: Echoes in the Night
      Genre: Jazz â€" Cool Combo

Earl MacDonald was a clinician at the Keyano College Jazz Festival several years ago, and to date, he is still my favourite piano player that they’ve had up for the event (although Tilden Webb is a close second; more on that, later). I guess part of what attracts me to his group is the larger combo setting, which is what I prefer; this is something that you don’t get to hear all too often before you reach “big band†classification, and then you’re into a whole other style. This album is a great one to do… well, anything to, really. It’s great study music, great music to sleep to, and great to just enjoy. Smooth yet energetic, I recommend this CD to any jazz combo fan, and hey, maybe even those who prefer the big band sound.

      thephatpackos4.jpg
Artist: Gordon Goodwin’s Big Phat Band
      Album: The Phat Pack
      Genre: Jazz â€" Big Band

I accidentally stumbled across the Big Phat Band one day while surfing around Amazon looking for some new big band jazz to listen to. To that point, I had been listening to a lot of classic bands, like Glenn Miller, Tommy Dorsey, Benny Goodman, and the like, and some swing-revival era stuff, like the Brian Setzer Orchestra and Big Bad Voodoo Daddy. However, I hadn’t heard any modern big band material. Thank goodness that Amazon helped me find this gem. This album is extremely diverse; ballads, funk, Latin, to straight up hard swing charts. The whole thing keeps you moving, from beginning to end. Actually, it was “Play That Funky Music†on the track listing for a big band album that caught my attention. Also, it features my all-time favourite recorded trumpet solo (“La Almeja Pequenaâ€Â), which is just fantastic. I highly recommend this album to any big band fan.

      rosesareredvioletsareblfv9.jpg
      Artist: Trocadero
Album: Roses are Red, Violets are Blue
      Genre: Rock â€" Alternative

For those of you who don’t know, Trocadero is the band that does the music for the online machinima series known as Red vs Blue. This album is basically the soundtrack for the first five seasons of the show. The show itself is great, and the music is just fantastic. I’d try and tell you which song off the album is my favourite, except I can’t; I love the whole thing. Maybe it’s the variety on the album that keeps my attention; constant stylistic shifts between songs transport the listener to different worlds of Western, rock, techno, disco, and others. I cannot recommend this CD enough to, well, anybody.

In life, there are some very tiring sounds.
The sound of a piano being tuned.
The sound of a 5th grade class of twenty-five playing recorders.
      The sound of a jackhammer.

None of these things, however, stand up to the level of sheer exhaustion induced by listening to Gregorian Chant. Now, I don't mean simply having it on as background music. I mean actually listening to it and trying to understand what it's doing musically. Trying to process Gregorian Chant is extremely tiring.

Don't get me wrong; I think that the chant is cool, and of course, extremely important in the history of music. However, wrapping my brain around the modal sound just drains me completely.

I don't know if I can do another three months of this History of Medieval and Renaissance Music class.

Howdy! Sorry for the long stretches of time with no update; if I was to update you regularly, you'd be getting a journal every few days that looked like this:

So, yesterday, I went to the gym. Then I ate lunch, went to school, chilled for a bit, ate dinner, and went to my night class.
Today, I went to to school, ate lunch, chilled for a bit...

Today, however, was a pleasant break from routine. Thank God.
But let me start with last night's open mic, first. Josh and I played a short gag-ish set featuring the following tunes:
smiley9.gifLegend of Zelda Rabbit Joint Cover
smiley9.gifInside of You (from the movie Forgetting Sarah Marshall)
      smiley9.gifThe Last Saskatchewan Pirate
We got put on good and late, so everybody was nice, drunk, and loud. smiley6.gif

Today, I woke up at around 11, and on a whim, I decided I would go down to the gym to catch the volleyball games. I'm glad I did, too, because Keyano kicked some Lakeland ass! The ladies took their match 3 sets to 1 (last set's score was 37-35), and the guys swept in three straight. Screamed my face off cheering for my Huskies, and got a free foam hand to show for it. Jackpot!

I love watching volleyball. I'm going to try and make it out to the Huskies games more. Oh, and you know what rocks? We're hosting the national tournament in March! I'm pumped! smiley0.gif

After that, I killed some time in a practice room and in the computer lab, ate some dinner, and then went and saw the Zemlinsky String Quartet. Absolutely amazing. Like, mind-blowing. They tour all over the world, so if you ever get the chance to see them, take it! Oh, and a girl I like wound up having her seat beside mine. What are the chances, eh? smiley8.gif

After the quartet, I went down to the lounge and saw a band play (Fire Next Time). Played some pool (tied on the night, I think), chatted, chilled, and caught the bus home.

I know it's really just another day, but the fact that I just kinda went with the flow made it all the more gratifying. Note to me: Do that more often.

Anyway, I guess that's all I've got for you right now.
Enjoy the rest of your weekends!

Yes and no. Click tracks are metronomes, but they are used specifically to designate the tempo for sountracks in studio. They are generally played through headphones to the musicians. The key difference is that the click tracks automatically change tempos and meters in time with the music that the musicians are recording. This is just a portible electronic metronome that is shaped to fit in the ear. Nothing more.
