    • A Thought/Question on American Politics

      realdeal_55

In Canada, we're used to having many political parties floating around. Four different parties (Liberal, Conservative, New Democrat, and Bloc Quèbècois) are represented in Parliament, with one or two independents. There are also many other parties out there that try to get seats in Parliament, one of the biggest runners-up being the Greens.

Right now, we have a Conservative minority government in power, which means that while the Conservative Party holds the most seats in the House of Commons, they are outnumbered by the number of seats held by all of the other parties. This means that the Government can be defeated easily (assuming the Prime Minister doesn't chicken out like he did in December, but that's another rant) if all of the other parties vote against them. If the Government is defeated in a confidence vote in the House of Commons, the Government falls, and we go to an election. Because of this system, we've had three federal elections in the last four years. We're supposed to have fixed elections every four years, but the laws governing that seem to be pretty hazy, and overall, it's pretty messy.

However, in America, there are only two prominent political parties: The Democrats and The Republicans. They exist in a somewhat cooperative manner (compared to Canada). Other parties, as far as I know, are basically unheard of, and never really make any ground.

My question is mainly directed to my American friends:
Would it be at all possible for third parties to enter politics in America? What do you think would happen to politics in America if a third party (or more) rose to the level where they started to be noticed or elected?

I'm just curious; leave a comment!
And if you happen to have any questions about Canada's semi-absurd system of politics and elections, let me know!

This song summarizes why I feel so great this morning:

      Better Days
      The Goo Goo Dolls
      Let Love In

And you ask me what I want this year
And I try to make this kind and clear
Just a chance that maybe we'll find better days
Cause I don't need boxes wrapped in strings
And designer love and empty things
Just a chance that maybe we'll find better days

      So take these words
      And sing out loud
Cause everyone is forgiven nowCause tonight's the night the world begins again

I need someplace simple where we could live
And something only you can give
And thats faith and trust and peace while we're alive
And the one poor child who saved this world
And there's 10 million more who probably could
If we all just stopped and said a prayer for them

      So take these words
      And sing out loud
      Cause everyone is forgiven now
Cause tonight's the night the world begins again

I wish everyone was loved tonight
And somehow stop this endless fight
Just a chance that maybe we'll find better days

      So take these words
      And sing out loud
      Cause everyone is forgiven now
Cause tonight's the night the world begins again
Cause tonight's the night the world begins again

Be Careful What You Search For: The Environmental Impact of a Google Query
      Brennan Conroy

While I was searching for more information on this topic, I discovered that in the process, I could have boiled two kettles of water.

New reports are surfacing about the environmental impact of the popular Google search engine. The numbers show that for every 7-10 minute session of “Googling,†7 grams of carbon dioxide (CO2) are emitted into the atmosphere. Do this twice, and you’ve discharged the equivalent amount of CO2 as boiling a kettle of water would have.

You may be wondering how this is possible. Well, everything runs on power, from the computer equipment you use to access the internet, to the massive storage servers at Google. When you submit a query, it travels through the internet to Google’s servers, where your search terms are analyzed, and your results are retrieved and returned to your computer.

The numbers I found about this topic were kind of skewed against Google, and the multinational search engine came out firing with its own data. According to Google, every individual search that passes through its servers emits 0.2 grams of carbon dioxide, which is recognized as one of the main catalysts of the global climate crisis. That doesn’t seem like much on a small scale, but one has to consider how many individual searches are processed by Google.

In August 2007 alone, 37 billion Google searches were conducted; that’s about 14 275 queries per second. Do the math, and that works out to about 2.855 kilograms of CO2 per second, or a whopping 7.4 million kilograms over that period. Now, those numbers are almost a year and a half old, but considering that use of the internet increases exponentially over time, the number of searches per second today is only going to be higher.

      What is your impact?

How often do you search Google? Think about it: Every time you search for anything on Google, you contribute to that more than 7.4 million kilograms per month of CO2. Every time you search for a source for your English paper, or you search for the lyrics to your favourite song, you emit 0.2 grams of CO2 into Earth’s atmosphere.

Google has come to be a huge part of society, and yet the impact it has on our air and atmosphere is absolutely disgusting. Do you think we could do without Google? Could we go back to finding all of our information from encyclopaedias? Printed newspapers? Dare I say… word-of-mouth? Or do people only consider their impact on the environment when it doesn’t inconvenience them?

Are you going to stop using Google after reading this article? Probably not. Personally, I know I won’t. Google has become so ingrained into our society that nothing will change with my article, or these numbers, and we’ll keep using it until our thirst for knowledge has been quenched, which will never happen.

      Because knowledge is power.

      Hey, all!

I just watched My Two Bobs again (2nd half of Season Four), and I was wondering what you guys think about the cliffhanger? What's to come of Mainframe (the system)? Will Rainmaker Entertainment even bother resolving that conflict?

Personally, as a fan, I'd be very disappointed if Rainmaker walks away from the situation in Mainframe.
      What do you think?

So, I'm very happy with how my schedule for the Winter semester worked out. Check it:
      semesteriischedss4.png
I'm happiest about my mornings, which, as you can see, are pretty empty. That's pretty nice taken hand-in-hand with the three late ensemble classes. The only thing I'm not really a fan of is the lone class on Friday. Although I'm not complaining. It's just slightly lame that I have to show up in the middle of the day for one class.

All of that free time is going to allow for a lot more practice and gym time. Sweetsacuce. smiley0.gif

      Hey, all,

I just saw this musical on DVD, and I was blown away. Val Kilmer was excellent as Moses, and, well, the whole cast was amazing. smiley0.gif
However, I'm having trouble finding much information on it. There's a page for it on IMDb, but other than that, there's pretty much nothing. Turns out it was fairly unheard of, which is a shame, because the film/play is well done, despite some... cheesy special effects.

Patrick Leonard's soundtrack is amazing, as well. I just wish I could find a cast recording of it somewhere. I could not find any info on one. The movie doesn't have a Wikipedia page, and Amazon isn't helping, either. Nothing on eBay, either. Anybody know anything about it?

    • Computer Consultation, Continued

      realdeal_55

Hey, guys. I've got a couple of questions regarding putting a computer together. In case you missed it, check out the first part of this discussion, here.

      1) Now that Christmas has come and gone and I've got some extra cash, I'm looking at putting together a computer. One of my friends has told me that there's a significant difference between DDR2 and DDR3 memory; apparently DDR2 is bad for what he calls "memory leakage." The manufacturer I'm looking at is basically giving DDR2 away, while DDR3 only becomes available on their higher-middle-end models. Is there a significant difference between the two types of memory?

      2) I'm thinking I can save some money by buying a bare-bones system and then ordering upgrade parts from Memory Express like more memory, a bigger HDD, better video card, etc.. Would you recommend doing something like that? Are there any considerations when doing something like that?

3a) The ideal situation for me is where I can custom-build my entire machine, once again, on Memory Express (check out their System Configurator). I know the basics about most parts, but I can't tell you a thing, for example, about motherboards or heatsinks. Actually, I'm pretty hopeless. The part that scares me the most is compatibility between parts. Is there anybody who'd be willing to guide me through that stuff? Actually, somehow, I ended up buying an extra Christmas present this year. It's not much, but maybe I'll do a contest and give it away to whoever can build the best computer on Memory Express within a certain budget... Hmmm...

3b) What are the advantages/disadvantages to building custom as opposed to buying from a manufacturer?

3c) Is buying custom as cost-efficient as I've been led to believe?

Those are the questions I have right now. Any advice/input would be appreciated. smiley0.gif

      Peace out!

sorry dudes, but i believe you're wrong.

there is one difference between a euphonium and a baritone and that is the tubing... all brass instruments fall into 2 categories, trumpet bell and horn bell. the trumpet bell produces a much brighter sound and the tubing is conical right until the last moment when the bell flares. the horn bell on the other hand produces a mellow sound due to its tapered bell which widens long before the bell flare. euphoniums are classed as euphoniums when they have this horn bell, regardless of number of valves, baritones fall into the former category of a trumpet bell also regardless of number of valves. In most music, the 2 instruments are separate named as euphs and baris, however in SOME orchestral and wind band pieces the parts can say baritone or euphonium which is where all the confusion really arises! as a general rule, in wind bands and orchestras always use a euphonium with a horn bell regardless of part name unless actually stated by the composer, all this confusion is generally caused by the ignorance of some composers hope that cleared things up

      sorry brennan but *whip noises*
i cant believe i just wrote all that you deserve a medal if you read it and understand it

Oh, but we have to bear in mind that while trombone can cover low range fairly well (I myself have worked my way down to G down in the zero register), but I'm more into jazz trombone, especially bebop. That means high notes as well, in which case I can comfortably play up around my triple high C now (6th register). Praise God for such individuals as J J Johnson and Jon Alred etc.!! smiley1.gif

      Oh trust me, I know.
I've confused a lot of people like this.

However, when you get technical, they are different instruments.
      Proper Euphs have 4 valves.
Prober Baritones have 2 bells, and possibly 4 valves.

Huh...I didn't know that. Good to know.
