It seems Christmas has succeeded in sneaking up on me once again. I don't know how this keeps happening. It seems like just a couple days ago I was preparing for finals, and it's Christmas Eve already!

A Barenaked Ladies quote seems appropriate:
"Where does the time go when it's not around here?"

Anyway, I'd like to wish you all a Merry Christmas, or a Happy Hanukkah, or Kwaanza, or Festivus, or whatever it is you celebrate. 'Tis the season! smiley0.gif
Oh, and a Happy New Year. That one's pretty generic. smiley8.gif

Oh, and I don't want to hear any horror stories after the holidays. If you're going to drink, please: Don't Drive.

      Peace out, all.

    • Computer Consultation and Advice Request

      realdeal_55

      Hey, guys,

I'm looking at investing in a new desktop computer. I don't need anything too performance-heavy, because I don't do much gaming on the computer; the only game coming out in the forseeable future that I might want to play is Diablo III. Some other things to consider:

smiley9.gif Even though I'm not much of a gamer, I still hate playing laggy games. I know that at least some aspect of latency has to do with the server I'm playing on, network congestion, etc, but I want a system that can handle a game like DIII pretty effortlessly on my end.
smiley9.gif When I buy a new computer, my rule-of-thumb is that the new one has to out-perform my old one in every way, for not much more than what I paid for my current system. Here's my current setup:
      - Compaq Presario V2000 Laptop
      - 110GB HDD (- 7GB Recovery Partition)
      - 1.87GB DDR2 Memory
      - AMD Turion 64 Mobile @ 1.99 GHz
      - ATI Radeon Xpress M200
      - Windows XP Home
The system itself cost me $1200, and then I invested about $500 in Office H&S 2005, Microsoft Encarta Encyclopedia, and Norton Internet Security Subscription Updates.

If you want to know anything else, let me know. smiley0.gif

Thanks for any advice you give! smiley0.gif

Oh, PS: I posted a similar request for advice on Facebook, and it turned into a big Mac vs PC war. Sorry, but I'm not switching to Mac.
Oh, and here's the system I'm looking right now:
      Dell XPS 430
      - Intel Core 2 Q8200 Quad-Core @ 2.33GHz
      - 4GB Dual Channel DDR3 SDRAM
      - 640 GB HDD
      - ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT 256 MB
      - 2 Year Warranty w/ Dell CompleteCare
      - Comes pre-loaded with Vista Home Premium 64-bit, Office 2007 Home & Student, 15 months of McAfee Security Center.
Regularly $1727 CAD, on sale for $1506 CAD.

      realdeal_55

I went to the movies last night. Plural for a reason, because after the first one got out, we decided we'd go see another one. I just have a few comments on each. Expect, of course, spoilers ahead. Spoiler-free Coles Notes summaries of my opinion follow each, marked as the Bottom Line.

      The first film was Bolt.
It was nice. A little too cutesy than I would usually enjoy, but I was in a pretty good mood last night. I enjoyed the way the relationship developed between Bolt, Mittens, and Rhino (to an extent). Rhino was put in there for obvious reasons, and usually a character like that would be overbearing and highly annoying. However, his integration was fairly seamless, and by the end of the film, I was actually left wanting a little more from him. There were times when Disney's movie magic was a little too obvious to the older viewer (albeit, the film is for kids, rated G). I thought John Travolta was a fun choice for Bolt's voice, not unlike the decision to cast Travolta in Hairspray, which, despite the controversy, was a good idea.

On a slightly technical note, my experience of Bolt was slightly detracted from by the extreme bass sounds coming from the next auditorium over, which happened to be the film which we saw next; see below.

Bottom Line: Overall, I was really happy with the film, and it's good for a smile. smiley1.gif

However much I enjoyed Bolt, it doesn't stand up to what we saw after.

The second film was The Day The Earth Stood Still.
First, I'd like to put it out there that I've never seen the original. This could be a good or a bad thing. I'm considering it a good thing, because I can talk about this remake without subjectivity.

What an important film. It's a shame that society today will take nothing away from this, until it's too late. Now, the film itself wasn't stellar by any means, but I'm glad I stuck around to see it. There were a couple times where I was like, "What? Why are they doing this? This isn't logical." I thought there should have been some repercussions for Helen taking pity on Klaatu and injecting the wrong vial into him, because she left the one marked "DANGER DANGER" in her lab coat pocket, which she took off and left on a chair at the lab/hospital. Also, I thought that the very quick development of the giant fire-breathing tube facility that housed GORT when they moved it from Central Park was suspect, even given the might of the US government and military. Unless, of course, they had a giant fire-breathing tube facility at the ready for just such an occasion. Talk about thinking ahead.

Things were going great in this film until about two-thirds of the way through (I think), until Helen, Jacob, and Klaatu wound up at the home of an "actual" world leader, Professor Barnhardt (John Cleese). As a viewer, I felt ripped off. Don't get me wrong: I loved the mathematical and scientific battle of wits that ensued between Barnardt and Klaatu. However, I would have loved to hear more of the discussion that followed between the two. The exchange the audience sees is just a fraction of the exchange that must have went on, because when Helen, Jacob, and Klaatu went to Barhardt's house, it was the dead of night; it was light outside when they left. I thought that the brief discussion between the two was the most interesting part of the film. I was very disappointed when we didn't see more of that.

That doesn't completely ruin the film, but like I said: I felt ripped off.

Keanu Reeves was... well, he was Keanu Reeves, in his typically spacey/alien-esque roll. I guess those are the parts he's born to play.
Jennifer Connelly did a great job, I think, in her role as Helen. She was as convincing as a leading astrobiologist, an occupation I never knew existed (or, I never considered the concept). Plus, she was gorgeous.
Kathy Bates as the Minister Secretary of Defence was interesting. Worth noting, I guess; something about her part, or how she delivered it, struck me.
Jaden Smith as Jacob Benson was as bratty as I could have expected. I don't really know what else to say about him. I'm kind of biased against him, because I'm not looking forward to him starring in the forthcoming Karate Kid remake.
John Cleese had a bit part, but he was excellent at it; I thought he was really convincing as a scientist meeting a being with all of the answers to all of the questions he could ever ask ("I have so many questions to ask you" was probably one of the most convincing lines in the whole film.). Once again, I'm disappointed we didn't get more of the exchange between him and Reeves, but I can't detract from the great Cleese.

Bottom Line: Hugely important film for today’s society. If you get the chance to, go see it, do so. It was pretty good, despite my disappointment with one scene, and a couple of other logic errors and continuity-based hiccups. I don't know if it does justice to the original, but standalone, I felt it was well done, with neat effects and intriguing concepts.

      Anyway, those are my thoughts.
What did you guys think about the films?

    • Angry Letter to my MP

      realdeal_55
      Good afternoon, Mr. Jean,

My name is Brennan Conroy, and I'm a 19-year-old music student at Keyano College in Fort McMurray. I've been watching the political turmoil unfold on Parliament Hill for the last few weeks, and I honestly have to say that I'm embarrassed to be represented by the Conservative Party of Canada in the House of Commons. I'm looking around for some reason to be proud, or faithful, or hopeful, but I just can't find it. So, Mr. Jean, I need your help in that regard. If you could, would you please answer these questions for me:

How do you justify your leader's cowardice? How do you get away with standing behind a leader who closes down the House of Commons just because his party is going to lose a key vote? What sort of message does this send to the children and young adults of Canada?

I appreciate that "coward" is a strong term. However, I choose my words very carefully, Mr. Jean, and after lengthily consideration, I've decided that it is most certainly the correct word to use to describe The Right "Honourable" Stephen Harper. Mr. Harper is running away from his problems, and you're following him; what a way to set an example for Canada's youth. This is going to look brilliant in the Social Studies textbooks of tomorrow. Congratulations are in order, I suppose, to the entire Conservative Party caucus: You have, in one fell swoop, told Canadian youth that when you have a problem, you can run away from it.

I look forward to a timely response, Mr. Jean; I think it's going to be very interesting to see how you justify this great shame that your party has saddled on Canada.

      Sincerely,

      Brennan Conroy
    • Opinion Poll: Shaving

      OK, here's the rundown:

The College's annual Student Awards Reception is coming up on Tuesday. This is basically a big shindig where all of the students who won scholarships can get together and thank the people/companies who donated the dough for the awards. If you recall, a couple of weeks ago I announced that I won a $5000 scholarship, which is pretty much the biggest award they gave out this year. It's very likely that the donor and the college will want to do a formal presentation for this award as opposed to just giving me the cheque and forgetting about it, which basically means that they'll want a picture. Furthermore, since I'm recognized as a student leader at Keyano, they asked me to give a short speech on behalf of the students.

I also happen to be on the College's Board of Governors.

However, this year, I've been taking part in what's become a bit of a tradition at Keyano. It's called No-Shave November, and it basically means exactly what you think it does. I haven't shaven since November 1st, and I'm feeling pretty good about the way my NSN beard has come in so far.

As I'm sure you can gather, I'm going to be in the spotlight for a fair while on Tuesday, and I want to portray a positive image of the student body, my program area, and the board. At the same time... well, it's No-Shave November, man!

What do you guys think? Leave a comment and vote in the poll.

      Some pictures, for reference:

    • Sweet Weekend

      realdeal_55

Hey, everybody! How's it going? smiley0.gif

I had a pretty sweet weekend. So sweet, in fact, that I'm going to tell you about it. Aren't you lucky? smiley6.gif

Friday after class, I pretty much spent the day in the King's Lounge, which is the bar run by the Students' Association on campus. Hung out with Josh and whoever else was around. Played some pool, and finally won a game this month. Frig, I was on such a dry streak. At around 7:30, Ken showed up, and we played some more pool, and then we went down the street to Alexanders for some Kareoke. Kinda disappointed that the host wouldn't let me sing more than she did, but whatever. We had fun, anyway, especially when Josh's Keats started smiling at us. smiley6.gif
      image015gv5.jpg

Saturday was a bit of a lazy day. I sat around for a while and did my theory homework, and then I watched the Stamps (slowly but surely) beat the Lions in the Western final. Als and Stamps in Montreal next week. GO STAMPEDERS! I also started my Christmas shopping; I'm doing most of it online this year, so I figured I should get a go of it, just in case. The problem with shopping online is that the massive selection entices you to spend more money. smiley6.gif A little after that, I went over to Josh's place and he, Ken, and I played some Brawl. And when I say some, I mean we started around 10PM and went until about 4:30AM. smiley6.gif

Woke up this morning around 11AM and played even more Brawl. I went home around 3. Been chillin' out at home ever since; watched some TV, bought some more Christmas gifts, and just relaxed.

It's good that I had a nice, stressless weekend, because every weekend between now and the new year is almost packed, especially next weekend; Jazz Fest is next weekend, so if you happen to be in the Fort Mac area, you should definitely check it out. There'll be concerts Thursday and Friday night by the festival adjudicators; tickets are about $20 a show, and it's all happening in the Keyano Recital Theatre. There will also be a concert on Saturday afternoon done by the high school jazz bands involved with the festival. It should be a blast; definitely check it out! smiley0.gif

Oh, and before I sign off: The Keyano College Visual & Performing Arts Department presents A Winter Affair of the Arts, our annual holiday-themed concert. It all takes place on Friday, December 5th at 8PM in the Keyano College main theatre. Tickets are... well, I don't recall how much they are, but it really isn't that much; under $20, for sure. Be there! It'll be a great show!

Anyway, that's it for me, guys! Sorry I don't update you more often on the goings on of my life, but I'm pretty busy most of the time. I'll write when I can, but if I for some reason neglect you guys over the next month and a half, have a great holiday season!

      Peace out, all!

It's really obsurd, she almost broke every limb.
When she fell down the stairs, tumbled in the dark..
Learned about a friend that cares, that she once sang hark.

But now she's getting sick of her lame rhyme..
And she's thinking futurely about the next time..
That she will be able to laugh about her chance of almost being dead.
Laugh to herself, along with Mr. Big-Head.

Yeah that's it, this is all, stop before I begin.
As the French would put it, the end, Fin.
