    • Reoccuring Dreams

      reedmon29

I have two reoccuring dreams that I get ocasionaly. They interest me, not because I had one recently (I can't recall the last time I had one, but it probably was a month or two ago), but because of how long I've been having them. I've had plenty of reoccuring dreams, but most stopped after a month or two. These I've been having irregularily for literally years.

In one (The more interesting one, but least common), it's always very brief. I'm at my parents house, its at night, and I walk into a darkenned room, and flip the switch to turn on the light.
What happens varies in certain details, but for the most part, the light doesn't turn on, and I'm immediately gripped by this horrible, vague terror. As if the light not turning on signals something horrible. The rest of the house is lit, and I keep trying the switch, fearing more and more that I might never be able to get the light to shine.
      And then I wake up.

What's curious is that these exact situations happen to me occassionally. It actually happened twice tonight, which is what brought this to mind. But other than the fear I got from associating what was happening to my dreams, I have no idea what's so terrifying about my dreams. But, even after I had achieved this analysis, I still had the dreams. I knew they involved me acting irrationally in a very simple situation, but for some reason, knowing this doesn't stop me from having them.
I guess my assumption that rationality should affect my dreams is a bit unfounded.

I'll write about my other reoccuring dream later

    • That's Quite A Reversal

      reedmon29

So, at the start of the week, things were looking pretty grim. I had homework due Monday, a pre-lab for my CPEG class due Tuesday, a post-lab due Thursday, class project for my CISC class due Friday, and not enough time to do it all.

Today, it's only Tuesday, and I got the homework and pre-lab turned in, the project has been postponed to next week, the weekly CPEG quiz for this week has been canceled (Because the professor canceled the corresponding lecture), and I just got an email from my PHYS professor... about two weeks ago, I had put my PHYS post-lab report into the wrong mailbox (Usually, I hand it back to my TA, but that week there wasn't a lab, and I had no idea what my TA's name was). Apparently, my lab report made its way to the right hands, and I went from a 33% (Pre-lab is apparently weighted 1/3) to a 100%.

So, it's only Tuesday, I only have one more assignment due this week, and I just got a huge grade reversal that has been bugging me for a while.

    • Is it Ok to kill someone...

      reedmon29

...if you have a very good reason?

So, about a week ago, we got an email saying that the power was going off again. For once, they even scheduled it: 6:00 to 6:15 Sunday morning.
That totally slipped my mind, but at 6:00, on the dot, my UPS beeped once to inform me the power had got out.
Then the goddamnd fire alarm went off, too. The combination of deafening roar, pretentious dude telling me to leave over and over again, lack of sleep, and knowledge that I was being hussled out because someone messed up their job, has put me in a pretty bad mood.

And I have to get up in an hour anyway.

I'm getting really tired of setting my alarm clock. smiley2.gif

So, this morning, UD sent out an email, "Electric Very Short Duration Power Outage to the buildings." I was at my parents' at the time, so I connected to my server and shut it off, just in case they turned off the power while I was still away. I got to my dorm at 3pm, and assumed they had already cycled the power, so I browsed the web and played Rainbow Six: Vegas 2 (My XBox is at my dorm, so this was my first chance to play it). All was fine, until 11:15pm.
Then, they finally got around to turning off the god-damn power.

I'm pretty sure my backup server is none the worse, since it came up like a champ automatically. I think my desktop might be Ok, because after locking up during boot-up three times, it finally got up properly. I need to do a chckdsk to verify that, though.

If my desktop turns out to be fine, I don't have much to complain about. I'm pissed off with UD for not giving even an approximate ETA, hell, they didn't even say what day they were going to shut off the power on. But, mostly, this is the cumulation of two things: One, I'm not made for the DIY computer scene. Sure, I can build and maintain a computer, but I utterly cannot handle replacing or RMA-ing damaged gear. And, secondly, I disparately need a new UPS. I have one now, but after about two months of service, the power went out, and I learned that not only is it incapable of powering a hand-crank LED for 5 seconds, it makes the most annoying screech you've ever heard when it goes dry. I have nothing plugged into the UPS slots, and I still cringe whenever the lights blink, for fear of the screech.

    • Misdirected E-Mail and Mail

      reedmon29

There's an article on Consumerist about the guy who owns donotreply.com, and how he's been getting sensitive emails for various companies for years.

This has me interested, because while my case isn't sensitive, I'm in kind of the same boat. And, those "legal" footers on corporate emails, "This email is for the designated recipient only, and otherwise we own your first born", have been an interest of mine for a while (How can you write something and assume that I'm suddenly going to be bound by it?).
Do mail laws apply to email? If you get an email that is addressed to you, but obviously wasn't intended to go to you, is that your problem, or the sender's? What happens if you get sensitive or embarrassing information from a company, but entirely because of the incompetence of the other side?

I hold that email isn't mail, and even if it were, so long as it's addressed to you, it doesn't matter who it's meant to go to. IE, the "TO:" field is all that matters, and the actual content is irrelevant. After all, how are you to know if you can read the letter or not, if the part that decides that is inside the letter? It's like those cases of a CD's EULA being inside the shrinkwrap, and opening the shrinkwrap binds you to the EULA. There's a disconnect somewhere.

But, yeah. I guess my main question is, are those legal footings that corporations force their employees to insert binding at all? Or are they, as I suspect, totally meaningless?

    • Tipping

      reedmon29

I'm apparently missing out on something, but the Consumerist linked to an article on another site talking about tipping at Starbucks. From the last couple of sentences of the first paragraph on, I'm completely lost.
Do Starbucks barista's make less than minimum wage? Is there something I'm missing here? Why should I be expected to tip?

I mean, I get the idea of tipping at a waited restaurant. It gives you a way to reward good service, and ostensibly encourages your server to do a better job. And I get that there's a blurred line between services that you should tip for, and stuff that it's not necessary (Or shouldn't be). But I hate it when I go to a pizza shop, order a slice of pizza, and feel like I'm not welcomed at the place again because I didn't put my 85 cents in the jar.

I'm trying to come up with a good argument, but I guess the issue is I can't think of how to argue against that position without taking up the stance that you shouldn't tip at Starbucks. I'm not saying that you shouldn't, my stance is merely that I don't get why I'm obligated to. I'm not obligated to tip at Burger King, or Dunkin Donuts, so why Starbucks?
If I'm going a pay a dollar more for a cup of coffee, why should I pay another dollar to secure the quality of service that the first dollar was supposed to have purchased?

When I worked at Quiznos and the UPS store, the idea was that we were more expensive than the competition, but people came to us because we provided good service, not because we were better. You could get a sub from Blimpees, or ship a package at the post office, but for a lot of people, they were willing to pay a premium to not have to put up with those places. So, they came to us. And the service they were supposed to get wasn't based on whether we expected to get tips, but simply from the fact that that's how things were done.
So why is Starbucks any different than the other over-priced-for-service businesses out there?

      Goodbye #1. Goodbye #16. Goodbye #17. Goodbye #32.
I'll miss you. Actually, I won't. 1 and 16, maybe a little. But I'm not going to regret getting rid of 17 and 32... they've been nothing but trouble.

So I'm going to get my wisdom teeth removed tomorrow. Reading over the list of possible complications, I'm kind of worried about what might happen. Bone shards? Surgical awareness? A weekend of pain and suffering?
I'm so glad I only have to do this once.

Apparently, if any other device is plugged into the router, the whole network will clock down to 100-base. At our last place, some computers were connected directly to the router, and others to the switch, which made the switch run at 100-base because of the cross-traffic.

If you connect a gigabit switch, and only a gigabit switch, to a 100-base router, and connect all of your devices directly to that switch, you should have a delicious gigabit LAN!

Oh, and get on Skype, nub. smiley0.gif

Reed, I thought I'd share this with you, even though you utterly fail at being on Skype at the moment. I got a hard drive to work on that PNY RAID card without resorting to either fake RAID or the software.

My secret? Um... connect the first drive to "Port 0" instead of any other port. The card apparently gets really confused unless it has a drive connected to "Port 0" for some reason.

So that's it! WHS likes the drive, and the speeds seem good. Good luck with yours! smiley0.gif

I think you could find separate examples for both, but Macro evolution is going to be a lot harder to prove, simply because it's not going to happen nearly as much. I think the same basic principles apply to both, though, although you can't use the argument of things like mutation, because it's outside the single species. However, arguments like natural selection could still apply.

Well, the probability of no tails in some finite series of flips is (0.5)(0.5)......(0.5) which has a limit of 0 as the number of flips approaches infinity. So, if the guy flips the coin an inifinite number of times, he will necessarily flip a tails eventually. But probability is not a predictive science.
