    • Game Review: Prince of Persia

      sam_fisher

Many moons ago, i remember a time when i was first beginning to become really interested in video games. I had grown up with a Super Nintendo, and a Sega Genesis, and they were always around, but it took a while for me to truly become fascinated with the prospect of video games. When i first got the PS2, i played it from time to time, never really losing myself in any games, until one day i bought a copy of Prince of Persia: Sands of Time. That game consumed my life for years. I had lost track of the number of times id played through it after the tenth run through and i still couldnt get enough of it. The combat, the platforming, the puzzle solving, all of it kept me coming back for more over and over again.

Later they came out with the sequel, Warrior Within, and it was a disimprovment. The combat was actually better that time around, and the platforming and puzzle solving were up to par, but the whole borderline emo attitude the whole game took really turned it off for me. I still played it, and i still enjoyed it, but it didnt compare to the original in an overall sense of lightheartedness.

Soon after that Ubisoft presented the last installment in the series, Two Thrones, which frankly, i didnt give two shits about. It was a good game sure, but the attitude of the whole experience had strayed so much from the original that i didnt even feel like the same franchise to me anymore. Ive never been a fan of the whole "two worlds" fad games have been going through for a while, and the wholly pointless chariot racing sequences left me scratching my head over how flow breaking they were.

With the Sands of Time trilogy over, I bid farewell to one of my favorite games of all time to welcome in the newest revival of the series, the simply named Prince of Persia. Let's get one thing straight before i get started, this is not Prince of Persia 4, like so many people are quick to call it, it is the first of a series revival, same general mechanics and environment, different story and characters entirely, and with that out of the way, time to get to the actual review.

The new Prince of Persia is a long way away from its great great grandfather in many ways, some good, some bad, some irrelevant. you play as the nameless protagonist being followed around by some chick i dont care about trying to do something about trying to seal some dark god in his prison beneath a tree, the story escapes me mostly because i never talked to Elika (that 'some chick') because i was too busy trying to play the actual fucking game, i can respect Ubisoft for trying to make a truly interactive story, but i dont think these two would have the time to idly chat for hours while trying to save the world.

Elika takes the place of the time warping aspect of the firstgame by being able to double jump the prince over long jumps, activating power plates, and helping in combat. I was hesitant at first about the game having an eternal tag along character. Ico taught us how cumbersome they can be, but Elika seems to be able to shadow the prince's movements and attacks perfectly, which is great for gameplay, but just to nit pick i will say that i doubt these two came up with this type of chemostry as quickly as they do but whatever, ill go with it. Elika also saves you from plummeting to your death as well as from falling in combat, which makes you in-fucking-vincible in every sense of the word, and if i could find a girl who can do tht for me id marry her immediatly, but in a vido game it really takes the challenge out of every aspect.

Combat focuses on one-on-one duels centering around the ability to pull off combos alternating between sword, gauntlet, magic and acrobatic attacks. the combat overall seems sticky and cumbersome the majority of the time, punctuated by quick time events that will break your fingers trying to pull off. you can throw Elika at the enemy if you want but you have to be so absurdly close that you might as well just knock him next to the ledge and finish him off in one hit rather then the 67 button combo.

The one area of the game that truly stands out is the platforming. it has a very nice flow to it that makes you feel good after youve completed it, knowing that that snobby bitch only had to sit back and watch you be awesome is reward in itself for me.

In conclusion, the new PoP is definetly not the direct descendant of the original, but the different traits make it a good game overall, not bad, but not excellent, deffinetly worth a look if you enjoy PoP, but dont be surprised when the ending pisses you off to the point of weeping because god knows that happened to me.

    • Game Review: Fracture

      sam_fisher

One of the games i recieved for christmas surprised me a great deal. I had expected Fracture to be a second class game, but in reality it isnt as bad as i expected. You play a power armor clad, shaved headed, cybernetically enhanced badass with the goofiest name in video game history, Jet Brody. something about global warming has caused the central united states to flood, seperating the pacific and atlantic coasts, long story short, your side opts for cybernetic anhancments, while the bad guys choose genetic augmentation, and war ensues.

The main focus of the gameplay mechanics is Terain Deformation, being able to raise or lower the ground around you either using your gun, or a number of grenades that get the job done faster. the combat is lack luster at best, with simple point and shoot gameplay, but it kind of varies when they add enemies into the fray that make it hard for you to point at them. Cybernetic augmentations such as harder punches and super jumps get added to your character whenever the game sees fit to do so, which is about once or twice per level.

For all its got going for it, the game seems to borrow alot from other games, namely Halo, even having an eerily similar shield bar that recharges in the same way, when youre not getting shot, but so what right? that seems to be a sort of winning formula.

In conclusion, it is definetly worth at least a rent, maybe even a buy. i wont say that Fracture is great, but i wont say its bad either. it did a good job of surprising me which games rarely do nowadays.

    • Game Review: Mirror's Edge

      sam_fisher

When i first saw trailers for this game i was thrilled and ecstatic at the same time. On one hand the game intrigued me because i had never seen a first person platformer before, while on the other i was doubting that same fact because it just seemed highly confusing. Well the wait is over and I finally got the chance to borrow it from a friend and sit down and play it.

My first impressions were very good, the interesting level design and flow of movement felt very natural and real to me, the game's mechanics are very fun to play with. As i got further into the game i began to notice that the developer's claims of "find your own path" wasn't actually true, most of the levels take place inside of buildings in small enclosed buildings and that doesnt really feel like "free running" to me. But that's alright i guess, it wouldnt be the first time that a developer has lied *cough* Bungie *cough*

While i was playing through the game, on several occasions i thought to myself, why am i doing this? what's the point? i did pay attention enough to realize that there was some sort of plot to frame the main asian chick's sister for assassinating a politician, but everything else is just a blurr to me, why is the city's government so evil? what are we being hired to deliver? it just falls short of immersive story telling in my opinion.

Overall i liked Mirror's Edge for its fun gameplay, beautifully simplistic level design, and the fact that i really felt like i was looking through the character's physical eyes. But in the long run, its criminally short campaign, its lack of immersion factor, and easily gained achievements make it only worth a rent (or in my case, a borrow from a friend)

The really good thing about the game though is not within the game but just the game being around at all. This game's formula is a step in the right direction in terms of the future of realistic gaming, but the game itself isn't all that it was cracked up to be in all of it's reviews and trailers.

    • Game Preview: Left 4 Dead

      sam_fisher

this is a little something new id like to try, just for the sake of doing so

i recently had the opportunity to play the demo for the new zombie cluster fuck known as Left 4 Dead and let me just say this, what the hell?

you start out the demo with an ungodly long cut scene about killing zombies, which i thought the actual gameplay was going to be about but what do i know right? eventually the four survivors, Mattias Nillson without the Mohawk, black office worker, asian chick, and everyone's favorite, old ex war veteran, make it to a rooftop, where AFTER going through the main menu of the demo, you finally take control where i automatically noticed issues i feel need to be addressed.

to start off with there are four first aid kits, a shotgun, an SMG, and extra ammo laying on a table in front of you, thinking that it would actually matter, i asked my teamates if anyone other than me wanted the shotgun, to which they replied "it doesnt matter, we can all get it". then i realized you dont actually pick up the shot gun, you just press X and kind of just get it.

i went into Left 4 Dead thinking that balancing out the party and selecting roles would be an important gameplay mechanic and that intrigued me, but once i learned that the missions usually went along the lines of "hey everybody grab the shotgun and just charge through" it lost its luster. from what little i got in the demo, the missions are just get from point A to point B while firing wildly and gameplay footage of other missions confirms that.

i had been reading for a long time before Left 4 Dead was even announced about the mythical 4 person co-op zombie shooter that everyone wanted to be made, hundreds of people responded to forum posts saying things like "specified roles would be nice" and "open worlded would be cool" and "baricadable positions would be awesome" and i feel that that's what people are expecting from Left 4 Dead, but it isnt anything like that at all, all it is is zombie killing, and while that sounds fun, i.e. the perfection known as DEAD RISING, it just gets old and repetetive after a while, even after only playing 2 levels of the blasted thing

and another thing, how come i cant even move when a zombie hits me? id be running away, not just sitting there asking it politely to stop because it hurts. it wasnt a problem at first, but after the third or forth time of getting hit from behind by one zombie, turning to dispatch him, only to hane one more come from behind me again and do it all over again until 20 surrounded me and i just spun in a circle holding RT.

the pistol pisses me off because its extremely overpowered, dual wieldable, AND unlimited ammo, i mean, i understand the importance of keeping ammo in a game like this and having a backup sidearm always at the ready is a nice little insurance policy, but my god, i went through the whole demo just dual wielding pistols and going john woo on their rotting asses, there wasnt even a need to pick up any of the other weapons except for the fact they they looked cool

if i had to give it one good thing, id say it looks good, and the physics and animations are fun to watch thanks to the already awesome source engine, but other then that, the whole thing is just one big headache and i wont even bother renting it.

This contest is open to one and all, and while there are no real prizes because the modding system is no more, i still think it can be rather fun

I know what some of you are thinking, "Well Sam_fisher, i dont see why he's one of your favorite characters, seeing as he never talks, isnt funny, and seems to be just an evil son of a bitch," well I'll tell ya, he's one of my favorite characters because of just the sheer power he posesses, and it was also fun just to watch him throw cars at Griff, but all this is beside the point of this Forum.

Ever since Halo 3 was released almost a year ago, there has been one thing that me and several other have wished for from this game, the ability to lower your weapons in Xbox Live, and not just in system link matches. The ability to do this would make more and more people able to release good machinima, since most people who want to make good machinima, say me and my friends, don't have the ability to get together and film considering we live half a country apart. But now, many have taken up the call and joined a group called Lower the Guns, as a movement to get this cause realized, if everyone who wishes this to happen would join the group, then maybe Bungie would hear our cry and answer our wishes, please join by following this link and together we can lower our weapons!

Recently, me and a friend challenged each other to make a crossover book of our choice, here's the first chapter of mine

      Chapter 1
      Arrival

The ground felt strange, yet familiar beneath the soldier’s boots. Sweat was running down his face and through the cracks of the scar on his right cheek as he stood alone on the metropolis street, a sign hanging over a nearby sealed tunnel read “New Mombassaâ€Â, the scars of battle covering the building sides and the street surfaces.
From what he could see, the city was a large one with a tower that reached up to the heavens in its center, and all over he could sense the restlessness of battle and war, a sense he had become familiar with over the years, and one he had experienced not seconds before.
Moments earlier the soldier was fighting with all he had against the burrowing enemies that he had been fighting against for as long as he could remember, and in the blink of an eye, he was in this strange city, the silence consuming him except for the occasional echoing boom of an explosive going off somewhere else in the city.
How am I here? He wondered to himself, and for such a large city, how come I have never heard of this New Mombassa? Where is my squad? My captain? He was hoping for anything familiar to come to him, even he sight of an old enemy would be welcomed in this alien place.
He propped his rifle against a nearby wall and leaned against it himself and pondered the situation he was in, wondering what his next move should be.
As he thought about this, a new sound came to him from around the corner in the main road, the low rumbling of machinery, vehicles, and hushed voices mixed in with it without perceptible words.
He quickly grabbed his rifle and ducked behind a nearby low wall. Keeping his finger hovering over the trigger, he peaked over the top of the wall to be greeted by the sight of a large green vehicle rounding the corner, followed by three more, large guns mounted on the backs of them, with gunners on each and the drivers and passengers in front. Several soldiers on foot wearing dark green armor were following the vehicles with their weapons at the ready.
One of the soldiers stood out among the rest, the one at the forefront. He was an older black man with a 5 o’clock chin and a lit cigar in his jaw, he must be their sergeant.
As the company approached he could hear the sergeant speak
“Keep your eyes downrange marines, the motion tracker showed a signal from this area, only looked like one but we all know that where there’s one, there can be moreâ€Â
A chorus of yes sirs followed this, and the soldier knew they were referring to him.
He raised his hands above the wall and rose to his feet, exposing himself to the company as they took aim at him
“Hold your fire men,†the sergeant barked “he’s no covenant, he’s odd looking, but no covenant,â€Â
      The sergeant approached him.
      “Name and rank soldierâ€Â
      “Lieutenant Marcus Fenix, Delta Squadâ€Â
