So it's been a while since I posted a good journal. Here we go. I'd like to briefly go over my thoughts on the many games I've played through in the last few months.

Fable III: Fun gameplay, better story than the second one but a few too many unnecessary gameplay functions that at times, got in the way or became confusing. Graphics still maintain the classic Fable cartoonishness but remain charming and at times, amusing. 8.5/10

Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood: Lot's of fun, new gameplay adjustments that compliment the well written if slightly reduced in length story. My limited experience with the on-line multiplayer suggests that if I were the kind of person to play much multiplayer, i might enjoy this game. Graphics are a good improvement over those in AC2 but nothing remarkable. 9/10

Fallout: New Vegas: Generally, a better game than 3 but the addition of varying ammo types became overwhelming especially when you garner a good amount of weapons. New story elements such as faction standing and weapon mods make the game more fun and interesting as every player will react differently to different groups. Graphics still have the same textures as Fallout 3, which at times is annoying, but player movements and minor animations run much smoother. 8.5/10

Portal 2: Fantastic game. The increased length in the story mode plus the multiplayer mode had me going back and playing it for a week and a half by myself or with a friend. Level design is much improved and the many levels outside of the familiar testing chambers are fun and challenging leaving you with a feeling of accomplishment when solving the more difficult one. Fun new characters as well, especially the CEO and founder of Aperture Science, Cave Johnson. His endless stream of insensitive, demanding and some times
down right insane jokes/phrases had me laughing every time he came on over the loudspeaker. 10/10

Deus Ex; Human Revolution: Having never played any of the previous Deus Ex games i didn't really know what to expect going into this. What I found was an immersive and expansive near future where there was something new to be found around every corner. Gameplay is very well done and expansive, allowing every player to choose how they accomplish their missions and work their ways through the levels. a good weapon selection and a wide array of weapon mods also allow for greater power in your particular strategy. Strange textures combined with sub-par facial animations make the graphics difficult to get past initially but I found that the longer I played the game, the less I cared as the rest of the game was very well polished. 9/10

Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine: As a long time fan of the 40k mythos and having invested quite a chunk of money over the years into a table top army, I found Space Marine to be the truest representation I've seen of the spirit of the IP in the nine years I've been a fan. In addition to an excellent spiritual channel, the game is just plain fun. I spent literally hours wading through teeming hordes of Orcs with a chainsword having an absolute blast. In the mythos of the 40k IP, Space Marines are the elite of the elite and are often referred to as the "Angels of Death" and the game you get that sensation. doznes, if not scores of enemies fall before you as you destroy them with both long range and CQC weapons. The graphics are good but nothing to be impressed by and the physics and character animations go over well for the most part, with a few instances of minor glitches. 9.5/10

So with that out of the way, whats up people?

    • First Impressions: Borderlands

As I stated in one of my previous journals, I will trying to write short and informative reviews whenever I find my self in the possession of a new game. Recently, I picked up Borderlands and Fable 3 and would like to impart my initial impressions of those games onto you.

Borderlands: I found Borderlands to be a well rounded FPS with trace elements of an RPG and old school shooters similar to that of DOOM and Duke Nukem. The gameplay starts off a bit slow, as your character starts off with only the most basic of guns and no access to any powers or upgrades until at least you have reached level 5. However, once I reached the mid teens, I found the game to be quite exciting. The new weapons I picked up ranged from standard level equipment to guns that shoot acid, fire, lightning and explosives. The wide variety of enemies also makes the game challenging as different ammo and weapon types are better suited for certain enemies. I found out rather quickly that one must have at least one elemental damage weapon to make any significant progress. Despite the excellent aspects of the combat, it has a few detractors. Until your character reaches a certain level, you will spend most of your time in combat backing up while firing as many of the earliest enemies are melee only classes and will peruse you.

      Gameplay: 9/10

Story: The Borderlands campaign structure, while fun, is very simple. almost to the point where it confuses you. The quests are very straight forwards and are easily kept track of in a section of the game menu but the way you acquire these quests is a bit annoying. The only indication that you have activated a quest is a briefly opened window with written lines of text an minimal interaction from the person/object you obtain the quest from.

      Story: 8/10

Visuals/Sound: The graphic style of Borderlands is strange initially but I slowly found myself growing more and more attached to the comic book-esque style. Solid black lines surround everything but I did notice that as you move across the level, those black lines will shift, an excellent choice in my mind. Really, the only thing I can say about the sound of Borderlands is that they are appropriate.

      Visuals/Sound: 7/10

That I was at RTX right now. I love living in the state of MInnesota. I love the weather, the people, the places and just about everything I know and love is here in my home state. One major down side to living here however, is that since it's not regarded as a large metropolitan state with big, bustling cities, not many major events come here. Almost none of my favorite bands come here and certainly no major gaming parties or conventions come any closer than Chicago, which is an expensive trip(my trip to Chicago last fall cost me something like $400 for just three days). Needless to say, I would love to make down to Austin within the next few years to make it to one of the RT events but for the time being, I will live vicariously through those of you who are in attendance.

    • Brink: Impressions

One thing I think I'm going to start doing is posting my first impressions of a game whenever I get a new one. Not necessarily a brand new game, but I game that I have never played before.

For my first 'first impressions' I will be discussing Brink, the new game from Bethesda Softworks and Splash Damage. The game looks, and reminds me of Team Fortress 2, Mirror's Edge and Borderlands. Designed to be played by player teams of eight, the overall quality of the game is good. A fast-paced, team based objective gameplay style is well suited for this game, incorporating many different objectives and tasks that must be fulfilled to win a mission. There is no team death match or slayer game type however, instead focusing all of the players efforts into accomplishing more than just raking up kills which again, is well suited for this game. The addition of the SMART system, the games interpretation of a parkour/free-running motion system, is mostly well executed aside from the fact that it is not always obvious what one can and cannot vault/jump/climb over. However, once you have a better sense of this, the game play begins to flow naturally and I found myself rapidly improving. The game CAN be played both on-line or off-line but is obviously designed to be played in a multi-player setting.

There are only 3 game types as of yet, Campaign, Free Play and Challenges. Campaign follows the story of either the Resistance, a force of citizens who are forced to live in shanty towns aboard the floating city known as the ARK, or Security, the ARKs specialized security task force. Each side is widely customizable and allows each player to create their very own citizen of the ARK, (my character is currently sporting a red and black hockey mask, a pair of truck tire shoulder pads and a green mohawk) with each side having totally different styles of dress. The Resistance wears mostly tattered old clothes or hand made armor while ARK Security wears well made and smooth looking body armor. The number of guns in Brink is absolutely staggering, sitting somewhere around 30 I think. Each gun also has various un-lockable attachments. Free Play is he same as Campaign except that you can play any mission and customize a small variety of options for your own tastes. Challenges are separate levels from the Campaign that allow you to unlock new weapon attachments, outfits and guns(that being said, you can also unlock these things in any of the game types, it just so happens that you earn more gear faster if you play the Challenges).

Despite Brinks unique gameplay, generally good graphics(I noticed some in game rendering) and great sound quality, the lack of a strong/fulfilling campaign mode is a bit disappointing for fans of a good story like myself and leaves the player unsatisfied and wanting to know more about the ARK, it's people and the rest of the world.

General Consensus: Brink is a fast paced, fun team and class based objective game with a great gameplay style and fun levels but the lack of a good story mode draws away a bit from this otherwise fun and exciting FPS. I give it an 8 out of 10.

So yesterday, I was asked to do an Easter Sunday delivery to a church out in one of the suburbs of Minneapolis(I now work as a catering driver, for your information) and was unfamiliar with the area I was in. I arrived at the location on time and got the buffet set up without a hitch, so the "problem" I had was even weirder. As I got back in my car and began to exit the parking lot, I realized my chosen exit was onto a one way frontage road. I noticed however, that there was an entrance to the parking lot I had just exited about 15 feet to my left, but the one way would have me only go right. I looked around and saw no cars coming so I went for it. In typical fashion, a cop pulles around the corner as I get out and go the wrong way on a one way, albeit for a very shrot distance. Lo and behold, I get pulled over in the parking lot and it is only now I realize that I had forgotten my wallet at home. So insurance card and story ready I prepare myself for what is surley about to be a ticket. The woman walks up to my car and I give her the insurance and she asks me if I know what was wrong, I tell her I went the wrong way on a one way but, and here's where it gets awesome, "I just had to get turned around, that's all". So i giver my name, and birth date and she comes back and gives me a warning. And THAT is how Red vs. Blue got me out of a ticket.

Yeah man, that looks pretty pimp! But doesn't it seem a little out of context though? Like, at what era is this supposed to take place? It has Republic Troopers in it, which would suggest the Clone Wars, cause after the Empire formed they were reformed as Troopers (i.e. Storm, Shock, Shadow ect.). It mentioned the Empire, which shows the order 66 had already taken place. There were a multitude of Sith, which only happened again in The Extended Universe series' (after episode 6). One could argue that they were actually the ranks of Emperial Dark Jedi/Sith (which actually did happen between episodes 3 and 4, and even during The Force Unleashed. But then again AFTER episode 6) HOWEVER they all had white lightsabers, the "Sith" in the trailer very clearly had red ones..... very epic... yet very confusing. Especially if ur a massive geek smiley6.gifsmiley13.gif

Well, I am getting ready for the summer conventions here in Cali and working quite a bit. :) How are things in lovely SP? I am originally from ND, and some of my family lives in St. Paul. I can't wait 'till I get to go home and visit ND/MN again. I really like the cities and miss all of the trees and grass etc. of the upper midwest!
