    • Wow, So RTX Happened

Apparently I don't spend much time on the site besides watching videos. It's been 11 months since I last updated my journal.

So, RTX 2013 was pretty great! Dan (my husband) and I flew down on 4th of July and by time we got into Austin it was 7 or 8 in the evening. This was my first time flying and I really enjoyed it. We'd scheduled a round trip ride through SuperShuttle to take us to our hotel and back to the Austin Airport, which was nice not having to rent a car. We stayed at the downtown Hyatt. It was really nice and only a few months old at that point. Friday morning we stood in line for about 2 hours to get our badges then hit Holy Cow Burgers for lunch (it was a little out of the way but we enjoyed the food) before scoping out the exhibit hall. We ended up finding the Steve Jackson Games booth and picking up a deluxe edition of their game called Munchkin. It's a fun card game where you have to level up by killing monsters. We were trying to decide what we wanted to do next when out of the corner of my eye I noticed someone behind me who happened to be none other than Burnie Burns signing autographs and taking photos at the signing booth. That was probably the coolest thing about RTX was just seeing all of our favorite RT employees. We didn't really get to meet or talk to any of them, but just the chance encounters like this were pretty amazing. Next we waited in line for the RWBY panel for a couple hours. It was a good panel but when they started it the room was only half full, so the people who were still shuffling in missed most if not all of the first episode. We were already seated before they started but it would have sucked to have missed part of it. We hit Vince Young Steakhouse for dinner. It was pretty fancy and we ended up spending about a hundred bucks for 2 meals, a shared dessert, and a drink a piece after the tip, but it was delicious, we both walked away stuffed, and overall it was well worth the price. Afterwards we went down to the hotel lobby and found a couple other RTXers to play our new game with us.

Saturday when we got to the convention center we immediately got inline for the History of Gaming on YouTube panel with Adam Montoya aka SeaNanners and Luke Stepelton, a former Machinima guy. It was pretty cool to see Adam in person since he's one of Dan and my favorite YouTube personalities. After the panel and a photo session with Nanners, Dan and I got in line for the RT store. The wait for that was about an hour to an hour and a half. We each got a hoodie and something for our siblings. Dan also ended up with a Zombie Plan t shirt and a RT bottle opener key chain. We ended up grabbing a salad a piece for lunch on the exhibit floor and then walked through the RT museum which was really cool. By the time we were done with that we decided that we were hungry again, I guess a salad doesn't keep you going for long, go figure. We went to Frank Restaurant for dinner that night. It's a gourmet hotdog place; it was really good and I highly recommend it. We tried to get into the attendee mixer that evening but after waiting for over half an hour the line was cut off quite a ways ahead of us and we ended up just going back to our room and resting up for the rest of the night.

Sunday was our last full day in Austin and it started off great with a 2 and a half hour line to see the RT Podcast panel which was hilarious even after some of the more cringe worthy "questions" from some of the audience members. I put that word in quotations because some of the audience members just decided to try to have a conversation with the presenters. Q and A times were always my least favorite part of every panel ever. I think a good way to get around this would be to have the audience write down questions while in line and have a few Guardians in charge to collect them and pick the best ones for the panelists to answer. Afterwards we wasted no time in going down to the exhibit floor and grabbing pizza and chips for each of us and a candy bar to split then immediately heading back up to get stand line for the RTAA panel where we waited about an hour and a half. We really enjoyed it though. For dinner that night we went to Blue Ribbon Barbecue. I wasn't impressed, their meat was good but if you like sauce this isn't the place for you, it was pretty much glorified ketchup. If we could do it again I would have found a different place to try.

Monday we had to be up by 3:30 AM to get ready to check out, grab a bite to eat, and check out of the hotel so we could catch our shuttle to the airport for our 6AM flight. We were exhausted and the stupid passengers who use huge carry on bags that are obviously bigger than what you're supposed to have didn't make the flight any more bearable. My only issue with RTX was that there was so much to do and not enough time to do it. I would have loved to went through Achievement City, found the photo booth with the different backdrops and try out a few games like Dive Kick and the Oculus Rift. We did get to see a crap ton of panels though so I can't be too disappointed. This was our first expo; all in all it was a very fun long weekend and I would love to do it again sometime. The Guardians were nice, super helpful, and kept the event running smoothly. All the other attendees seemed to be really nice; Dan ended up stirring up a conversation every time we stood in line. Even the weather cooperated; it stayed in the mid to high 90F range. That was a bit warmer than what we're used to up here in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, but the 90 degree weather with no humidity probably came close to our mid 80 degree weather with lots of humidity. 10/10 would attend again.

I admit it has been a while since I last updated, but most of July was pretty boring and I had nothing to report. Once August rolled around I experienced a lot more awesomeness. My sister had to take a test over in my neck of the woods to register for her final year of her paramedic degree. She ended up staying with my husband (Dan) and I for just over 2 weeks, which was great since we hardly ever get any company. Once her test was over (and she passed it) we did a lot of shopping, went swimming and bowling, had/made lots of good food, saw the new Batman movie, got her caught up to the current season of RvB, and we introduced her to the driving range. She was starting to get the hang of swinging my driver by the time she had to leave. Her departure was bittersweet though, since we can push each others buttons without actually meaning to.

The best part of her staying over was that we were finally able to get our tattoos done. I'd had the idea for mine for about 3 years now. We were very lucky that the artist we wanted was able to squeeze us in. When I'd called to try to set up an appointment, she was scheduling for November!!! With all of my sister's classes and hours she has to put in at the hospital and in an ambulance she wouldn't have been able to work in time to make the 3 hour drive over. But anyways, that was an interesting day to say the least. We were both first timers and me being the sensible one of the two of us I chose a smaller tattoo (pic posted in my image section) to be my first and it only took the artist an hour. My sister on the other hand chose one of the most time consuming subjects she could find (a peacock feather that has lots of shading and detail), decided she wanted it on one of the more painful spots she could find (her ribs), and to top it all off wanted it pretty big (from her armpit to her hip). It turned out beautifully, but I have no idea how she sat through 7 hours of what feels like someone slicing at you with a razor. Everyone at the tattoo studio was extremely impressed with how well she sat as a first timer while getting a rib piece and awarded her badass of the month. Of course that was almost 3 weeks ago now and both of our tattoos are heeling up wonderfully and we're on to thinking about what we want done next now that we found a studio and artist we're happy with. I do feel bad that we both forgot to tip her; after our long day we were both pretty well out of it. It's not too big of a deal though since the studio is right by my townhouse. I just have to remember to stop by once I'm fully healed and deliver her tip.

Labor Day weekend is rapidly approaching now and Dan and I still have no idea what we'll be doing. So far our options are stay home or go to my grandma's for a big family get together. We won't know until Friday what we'll be doing since it's dependent on whether the work force at the mine my husband works for strike or not. If they do strike he'll have to work to fill a position, but if they don't strike we're good to go. I hate not being able to make plans. I don't really care either way if he has to work or not, I'd just like to know what's happening.

Also, this week's RvB (episode 12) is by far my favorite of the season as of yet! I'm a sucker for all of the drama and emotion but there was a good dose of humor mixed in with it as well. It was great to see (spoiler) Carolina letting her guard down for Church. The whole group has enough problems as it is and the trust issues between them definitely don't help. I can't wait to see if this changes her outlook on the rest of the reds and blues, and how everyone responds to her change of heart towards Church. It was horribly sad to hear York talking about Carolina in his logs and knowing he'd die before seeing her again. I was closer to crying at that part than ever before in an RvB episode!

Well, this has turned out a lot longer than I figured it would, so I'll catch you one the flip side.

So I was looking over my profile and I was quite upset by what I found under the games section. It's showing games that I've either played only once or haven't touched in a very long time. Also it's missing some of my favorite and more recent games such as Portal, Portal 2, Crazy Taxi, Saints Row 3, and Dance Central. I have never played Assassin's Creed 2; I must have accidentally loaded the game or something one time. Also, I've never played Yaris or Aegis Wing, my husband must have played them before he gave me the account.

On a side note, now I have the song in the journal title stuck in my head.

    • Rt podcasts and RTX

I must say that I've really been enjoying the RT Podcasts. This week's was amazing, so much so that I'll probably have to listen to it again soon. Maybe after I post this? Is it weird to listen to the podcast and then listen to it again 5 minutes after you finish it? Am I obsessed? Lol, probably. Also, I really appreciate the fact that RTAA shirts are now available in the store! I guess I'll just have to add on to the list of online purchases I want to make.

So, last weekend I talked my husband, Dan, into taking me to see The Grey. Burnie had been talking about it on a podcast a while ago and he made it sound amazing. Well, he was right and it was amazing!! Dan summed it up perfectly by saying it was "intense". I don't know how many times I cried throughout the show. I usually hate movies that are that emotional, just because I get so caught up with the story line or the character's plights, but I absolutely loved this one! Some people in the theater were unhappy with how it ended, but while I can kind of understand where they were coming from, I totally disagree with them and thought the ending was fine how it was. So the moral to that story is that you should go see The Grey if you haven't already.

As a final topic with hopefully not TMI, I believe that Dan and I have come to an understanding and agreement. Before we try to get pregnant and completely alter our lifestyle with little demons, we should go to an RTX event one year. A few of our friends with kids or who are currently pregnant have went on fairly big trips before hand and I like the idea of one last hurrah before our freedom is taken from us. I doubt it'll happen this year though, I'm hoping for the next.

Detroit Tigers at Texas Rangers. I'm a Tigers fan all the way and this should be a good game. Especially with my favorite player Justin Verlander on the mound! Anyone out there tuning in? Well, good luck to both teams, but I only have eyes for you Verver!

The hockey season just officially started not too long ago. If you couldn't guess I root for Detroit in this sport also. My favorite player retired after last season, he was goalie Chris Osgood; so now I'm on the look out for a new favorite. The Red Wings have a lot of new faces on the team, so I look forward to seeing what they can bring to help out the cause.

I really don't watch any sports other than that. I like badminton, ping pong, and curling, but I don't watch too much of those. Tennis is okay, but it's not usually my first choice in sports programming. I never could really get into football, don't know why, it's just not my thing. And I consider basketball to be a sport for those with ADD. One team makes a shot and then they run to the other end of the court and the other team can take a shot repeat the process a hundred times or so and that's a game. It's like tennis as far as the back and forth goes, but with a bigger ball and players with hands the size of tennis rackets. Soccer is just too foreign for me and I have to admit I never really tried to watch much of it. I'm just not interested. But I agree with the rest of the world that soccer should be called football or futball. In soccer you use your feet on the ball. In American football you mostly use your hands on an egg shaped ball, so it obviously should be called handegg. Let's see as far as any other sports, I can only think of golf that is fairly popular and I haven't mentioned yet. I like to play a bit of golf but suck too badly to want to watch professionals who could pwn me that hard. Forgive me if I left anything out.

I finally got my one week on the site achievement! I was stuck at 6 days 23 hours and 12 minutes for a long time. I hadn't been signing out, so I figured that was probably causing my problem, so I logged out and now I keep forgetting to log back in. Oi, go figure. Now I just need to step up the journal writing so I can get that corresponding achievement.

After several months of good intentions, I finally rented and started playing Shadows of the Damned; I really enjoyed it. But my main problem is that I have a hard time aiming when I play any fps. Well, the mechanics of aiming in this game seems to make it twice as difficult as usual, so I played through most of the first act, but got to the first mini boss fight and I had to have my husband do it for me. After he got past that part I just had him keep going. Then I didn't want to play it and mess up his progress so he ended up playing the whole game on my xbox account and got me most of the achievements. So kudos to him. Anyways, it was a fun game to watch and quite funny.

Well, Fall is definitely on its way to northern Michigan. We have a freeze advisory for tonight and last night it got down to the upper 30s (that's in Fahrenheit for all you non-Americans). I kinda feel bad for you people in the southern US and that horrible heat wave, but what else do you expect from living down there? I know it's not normally so warm, but this has been a year of extremes.

So, I was browsing other users journals and found goggles.sneakygcr.net/ . It's pretty awesome! I have a hard time describing the wonders that it provides, but it explains on the website what it is.

Anyways, I'm completely loving the new user profile page! It organizes everything so much better than how they used to be. Now if I could only figure out how to un-attach my deleted twitter account...

One last thought, I'm excited to see Michael get more involved in RT! It seems like he's coming to be quite popular.

And one last last thought...sorry for the disjointed and half elaborated ideas. It's been a very long day.
