So today was my 5th day of training at CareerBuilder. Yesterday afternoon, I was introduced to my team lead (my direct superior). He pulled me out of class and asked if I wanted to join my team (Central Account Managers) in paintball versus the Eastern Account Managers. Of course, I said yes.

Today, at noon I drove to the paintball place and we played paintball from about 1:00pm-4:00pm. It's been a long time since I played paintball, and I forgot just how fun it was. We played on four different fieldds, and our teams finished with a tie of 2-2.

So far, work at CareerBuilder has been amazing. W00t!

Okay, so things at CareerBuilder are going great. I'll have more to report soon, but this is all the time I have for a journal.

Day 2 of 13 in Training is going well. Yesterday was mainly a day of company overview and history. Today, we're covering a lot more of the "meat" of the material.

      Wish me luck!

How much you pay in taxes every week/month/year?

Do you ever wonder where that money is going?

Do you ever wonder if you could decide a better way to use it than the people using it for you?

Would you donate to a charity or start a charity if you had a lower tax burden?

Stop playing Grifball and give me some new videos!
Stop drawing comics and give me some new videos!
Stop reviewing games and give me some new videos!

I remember when this site would have 3,000 users signed in on a slow day. Right now, there are 952, and one of them is DeadDragonn who never signs off. :) You know what, I don't care if you play Grifball, draw comics, or review games. . . it's actually kinda cool. However, when the only reason to get on this site is to check up on friends and their journals, it gets harder and harder to justify coming back. I don't even care how many people are members on this site. I could really care less. However, don't ask me to sponsor something that gives nothing in return. If that's the way it's going to be, then GET A JOB!

      *Misses RvB*

Please, RoosterTeeth, throw me a bone here. I'm sure I'm not there only one that is dying for some new videos. I can think of 3 users in particular that feel the same way, and I'm not even that much of an active member. Read the writing on the wall. Please.

Articles of Confederation = more freedom
      Constitution = less freedom

      That's all I say. :-P

    • TheAlbacor

However, the beauty of a capitalist system is that a person can pull himself up and make himself successful by his own definition. There's plenty of opportunity for him to do so.

You're right. And once they've done that, they've also pushed other people down.

I know that our Constitution was written with the rich in mind. Many of the 55 were holders of war bonds who were unable to collect money under the Articles of Confederation. They were also all wealthy besides that point. I wonder why they would set up a system that favors the rich and able...

Here's an excerpt from an article about this:

To prevent Congress from either looking the other way [End Page 348] when the states violated the constitutional ban on relief legislation or adopting relief measures of its own, the Framers made the new national government considerably less responsive to the popular will than even the least democratic of the states. As Gordon Wood noted, the "Constitution was intrinsically an aristocratic document designed to check the democratic tendencies of the period."

I can email you the whole article if you want. It's called An "Excess of Democracy" -- Or a Shortage?: The Federalists' Earliest Adversaries by Woody Holton. I haven't read the whole thing, but I've heard about it.

As of right now I'm voting for Ron Paul... I don't care if I have to right him in.

However, I don't think that we should lower the middle class tax burden by increasing taxes on corporations and the wealthy. Think about it. . . where is your next job going to come from? It's more than likely going to come from a corporation.

I don't see why that would happen. Corporate profits have jumped since the 90s and the computer became more accessible, but real wages have gone down. The average person is making less money, but the executives are making more money. This isn't because an increase in job stress or an increase in responsibility, they just have the power to make it happen. What we need to do is limit the amount of money an executive can be paid based off of the total amount of profit the company receives. No executive is worth 30 times what the lowest paid employees are worth. They are all part of the corporations success and they all deserve to be paid fairly.

The same goes for America as a whole. The working poor especially are treated unfairly. They are part of our country's success and should be on more of an equal level because of it. It's not punishing the people who excel, it's letting them know that, despite their efforts, they don't mean shit without the thousands of others that they take for granted.

I don't care that people CAN rise up from poverty. There are people who try and if most of them succeeded the amount of our country who lived under the poverty level would be decreasing. That's reality. Ideally, yeah, they'd all succeed, but capitalism by definition will not allow for that. There are ALWAYS going to be poor people, starving people, people without healthcare, etc under a capitalist system. Capitalism is driven by greed.

As human beings, I think it's only right that we allow for people to have more of an equal footing. Shitty inner-city schools need reform, as do the inner cities themselves. Since we're based on money (which is a fake thing we just made up to make trade easier) and many of us don't have it, it is either the government's job or the job of the rich to be socially responsible.

When we have people dying of bacteria from their abscessed teeth getting into their brain and other people being able to go for a stubbed toe, we have a problem.

    • TheAlbacor

If 70% of the people are dissatisfied then why do majorities of voters keep electing people over and over? If its a case of picking the lesser of two or three evils then we have another whole discussion to have.

Because most people don't follow their representatives very well. They hear about the incumbent over and over and they'll usually vote for them simply based on name recognition, unless they somehow fucked up really badly.

Besides that, the voter turnout during presidential election years is only around 50% in recent history, with the last two being exceptions to that rule. During the midterm congressional elections the turnout is only around 40%.

I would definitely say that there are many things behind this. The approval rate for congress is always low. Last I heard it was hovering around 32%. There is also the time factor. There are so many representatives and senators that represent us in Washington, let alone at the state level. It's hard to find time to learn about all of them, especially when many people work 40 hours a week.

And yes, I do believe we vote for the lesser of two or three evils. Democrats and Republicans (and this is based off my political science classes) are so close to the same, it's not even funny. They take different stances on a few issues, but when dealing with money they're both perfectly wiling to give tax break to the rich and the corporations. Some Germans that were in a few of my classes said that Democrats would be considered very conservative in modern day Germany. (They also said that the level of nationalism is not unlike the level of nationalism Germany had just before WWII, but that's just a side note.) Not only are they incredibly similar with respect to the whole political spectrum, they also have a monopoly on political power. And all of them that I've heard of, at least on the national level, are rich as hell. So, it's no wonder why they vote to benefit the rich so often.

I just don't agree that only so many people could qualify to be brain surgeons. The reason there are few is because it costs so much to be one. If we gave everyone the same educational opportunities things would definitely be different. Why should someone in the lower class have to work 20+ hours a week just to go to college (especially when their grades suffer because of it) and someone who's rich doesn't have to worry about, this giving them yet another advantage.

First off: We don't have a free market. Many of our market are now controlled by oligopolies.
Second: The American people still suffer taxation without representation. Last time I saw, some 70% of people feel that their elected representatives don't care about the issues that matter to the constituents. I wouldn't be surprised if that number was higher now.

Your mother said pretty much the same thing to me, although it involved more tongue...

    • TheAlbacor

It allows someone to be born in poverty to rise to wealth through hard work, determination, ingenuity, etc.

The chance of someone rising from poverty is mostly unrealistic due to the shrinking middle class and the raising of college tuition. However, people like Paris Hilton, who have contributed nothing to society have more than enough money, despite the fact that they don't deserve it.

Also, the wage brackets for jobs are incredibly unfair. A brain surgery makes hundreds of thousands of dollars, yet sanitation workers make much less. How does this make sense? If we lost ALL of our brain surgeons and completely forgot what brain surgery was, a few people with head traumas and what not would die. If we lost ALL our sanitation workers and nobody else could do it, disease would be rampant in the streets and many would die simply due to sickness.

My point about that is: The only reason doctors make so much money is because the AMA has basically a monopoly (government approved) on medical care. Now, I'm not advocating going to some tribal healers, but the only thing the AMA should be able to do is regulate doctors, not inflate the cost of medical bills. The sanitation workers on the other hand... I guess it's just too bad for them.

A free market is a very very bad thing. I don't know if you remember slavery, child labor, and pre-OSHA conditions... But free markets lead to large amounts of corruption and dominance by the wealthy. It's hard to decide to strike when you barely make enough money to feed yourself and your family...

    • TheAlbacor

I wish people would stop complaining about capitalism. I wish they would give me an alternative that allows for as much freedom and personal prosperity.

Well, if you mean the "personal freedom" of the rich to do whatever they want and the "personal freedom" of the poor to have almost nothing owed to them by the government. Or, the "personal freedom" of the middle class, which now mostly consists of 2 income families, unlike 50 years ago thanks to the taxes being shifted onto them and the reduction in real wages (which is happening despite the increases in profits and productivity).

If you measure personal freedom based on wealth, you're right. The top 10% of people now own approximately 80% of the wealth in this country, and therefore own 80% of the economy and "personal freedom." All this, while 12% of the country is living below the poverty line and the middle class shrinks.

Capitalism is not freedom. People here often perceive it as freedom, just like they perceive our political system as freedom. Thing is, our political system allows for some influence of the common people, whereas our economic system does not. Our economic system is ruled by rich tyrants like medieval Europe... There is no input from the common people, the common people are told what they want.
