This article explains that national core curriculum does not produce citizens who are “enlightened, self reliantâ€Â, and well informed. The author gives education commission reports from the Secretary of Education, and shows that a core education is not always relevant to every person. The author explains that the purpose of education is overlooked. He furthers the importance of informed voters, and the benefits of informing people about the structure of the nation.

NCA officials also provide counseling on nutrition on a daily basis to help students realize that a healthy diet promotes a strong body and a sound mind. In the public school setting, officials aren't as likely to pay attention to whether the students are eating the school lunch or filling up on junk food.
Policies and rules under each of these schools were very different although they shared the same structure. The rules of NCA follow more along the lines of an old college such as Yale. NCA requires its students to wear uniforms. The school founders believe that it takes away distractions and puts all students on an equal footing in regards to their wardrobe. At HCHS, students can generally wear whatever they want to wear, which can cause a lot of unnecessary distractions, peer pressure and daily efforts to make sure that clothes are covering enough. In some respects, student and teachers at NCA have more freedom than is afforded at Harrison Central. While NCA students have the freedom to read the Bible at school, talk about religion, and pray if desired, such behavior is prohibited at HCHS. NCA's rules and policies follow the beliefs of the school's founders while those at Harrison Central are largely influenced by the Mississippi Department of Education and requirements linked to federal funding.
Schools that are people-controlled rather than government-controlled are much better for those who prefer an environment that allows a student to work and develop at his or her own pace. A student’s experiences in highschool will teach them much more than simply curriculum. The things learned in ones foundation years will set them up for success. On the subject of education and the high school experience, bigger is not necessarily better. Education is the center of both schools. However, the differences in extra activities, rules, and atmosphere make it clear that a smaller school offers a more personal education with a focus on a student's individual needs.

      Private or Public
A private school, such as Northwood Christian Academy NCA, and a public high school, such as Harrison Central High School HCHS, share many similarities. However, there are many differences that make one a more desirable school for highschool students to attend. For those who prefer a school with a mass, structured, educational system HC may be the choice. On the other hand, a student who wishes to attend a school that focuses on life skills and personal acheivements along with education, NCA would be the perfect school. These differences not only will effect a students grades but also the rest of there life. In comparison, the focus of each school is education, but there are major differences in curricular activities, rules, and atmosphere that make one school more preferable over the other.
Education methods at Northwood are more personal and much more effective. The students have more one-on-one time with the teachers primarily because the school has much fewer students. Students are introduced to learning through sound, sight, and application. With these practices each student works at his or her own pace under a teacher's guidance. HC teachers lecture and assign and students are never encouraged to learn any more than they have to. Students of NCA also have their own computers and use them on a daily basis. On the contrary, public schools do not have computers in each classroom. Public schools have had the "no child left behind" slogan for several years, but with no action or funding to achieve the goals. At NCA, students are highly competitive because of the rewards system that is set in place. Students who meet their academic goals receive rewards every few weeks. They go on field trips to a zoo or skating rink or can read at their desk or listen to music of their choice. The rewards at HCHS primarily are the grades and whether one passes or fails. While public school education is free, parents who are paying for their child's education are more likely to expect their children to excel.
The experiences of a would be graduate are effected by many things over those years including teachers Teachers at NCA are qualified not simply by educational standards but also by personal morals, ethics, and Christian principles. Students sometimes learn more from their teachers than just the curriculum. For instance, current and former students say their teachers routinely give good advice about life, personal experiences and the effects of choices. Most students at NCA through the years have not only done very well on ACT's, but also have completed their studies before the official end of their senior year. Also, the drop-out rate for NCA is zero. In comparison, HCHS and other public high schools in the state are struggling to motivate students to finish high school. Also, graduation at HCHS is an almost impersonal ceremony, because of the hundreds of students who are sharing the same, rushed occasion. On the other hand, NCA graduations are much more personal. Tables are set up for each student to display pictures, awards, accomplishments and memories. Many people are drawn to tears as they look on at how the graduates' lives are set out before them in beautiful arrangements.
The extra-curricular activities at both NCA and HCHS are interesting when compared. NCA's activities are mostly sports and physical education classes mainly involve basketball, football, and soccer outside on courts and fields. HCHS's P.E. activities include choices such as weight-lifting and running track. Students rarely see outside when in a P.E. class at HCHS. Weight-lifting and track can be competitive for some students but it is not encouraged at all. Both schools have sports teams; however, all students at NCA are allowed to participate in teams. At HCHS, sports teams are off limits to those who are not selected through try-outs.
Both schools have a wide variety of clubs that students can join. Although HCHS has a larger number of clubs available, NCA's groups have more members than many of the clubs at HCHS, even though HCHS has far more students. Many of the groups at NCA aren't small groups; on the contrary, more than half the school's students are members of some of the same clubs. A lot of the clubs at both schools offer enjoyable experiences. However, NCA's clubs are centered on giving experiences that students can use for future success in life. HCHS's chess and art clubs are not necessarily conducive to life skills. NCA's clubs often take trips on missions to help the needy, and to work at places to learn about different job opportunities. HCHS does have Junior Leadership Club that do similar activities, but students must meet set requirements. Also, similar to HCHS, NCA does participate in regional competitions that allow students to learn and excel not only in sports and music. Students of both schools have the opportunity to do activities such as photography, art, writing, and radio production.
There is a noticeable difference in the size of each campus, though proponents of smaller schools see a smaller campus as a positive issue in several ways. HCHS is a much larger campus. The larger the campus, the longer it takes for students to get to their classes, which means less time in the classroom. Those who enjoy the concept of a small private school say that a more compact campus lends itself to a close-knit experience for the students. The massive number of students who attend HCHS requires the cafeteria to shuffle students in and out quickly. Schools such as NCA are too small to have a cafeteria, which means students must bring their own food. NCA officials also provide counseling on nutrition on a daily basis to help students realize that a healthy diet promotes a strong body and a sound mind. In the public school setting, officials aren't as likely to pay attention to whether the students are eating the school lunch or filling up on junk food.

      A Colorful Battle

The field during a paintball battle feels like another world altogether. This familiar place becomes foreign in such chaos. This site of paint war causes me to feel everything that happens almost in slow motion. Every sound and sight sends tingles down my spine. The forest, players, equipment, and attire all contribute to this atmosphere of excitement and battle. The atmosphere of this woods-ball field floods onlookers with the all-encompassing feeling of adrenaline.
The atmosphere on the field attack my senses as a few rounds of paint are thrown over my left shoulder. I can take a vantage point from the top of a hill a little to the west. I see bushes and bases spread very evenly. Bases are small and made from random objects like wood and plastic. The far north is a base made of monster truck tires. The rubber is worn down to the metal threading that threatens to rip even the thickest body armor. The field is wet with a mix of rainwater and the previous battle paint. From a huddled position inside a thick shrubbery, I can struggle through rays of bright sunshine to see weeds wavering in the winds. Much can be heard as I try to cover myself more with the muddy green environment. Lying in my bush I can feel thorns digging deeply. Rustling in the bushes farther to the left might be friend or foe. A plump little squirrel runs from the rustling bush and almost gets shot. The splash of a puddle signals feet running through a path a few feet in front of me.
Players can slightly be heard or seen possibly just before a big shoot out occurs. Every hair on my neck stands on its end. I can run into the closest bushes for a better vantage point. The slimy itchy feeling of mixed sweat, mud, and paint is drowned out by the desire to conquer. Players are everywhere silently waiting. The field is quiet just before an exciting loud battle breaks. Players begin jetting from bush to barrel. War cries can be heard from the other combatants. Listening can be difficult while I try to slither through thick bushes. At the center of a chaotic battle field, enemies could be feet away ready to execute strategy. After sitting in wait for so long trigger fingers fight the urge to shoot at any moving thing.
Hiding is only the beginning part of the game. I notice this player not far off low in wait. No face can be seen behind a foggy black mask. He holds his long gun high as he kneels. The shiny barrel in the bright sun gives him away. It sticks out like a white flag. He is tired and sloppy, and so his aim will be. He suddenly looks less like a player and more like an easy point for my team. He is an easy target, but clouds grow overhead and distract everything from the grasp of my sight. Moments later the opponent splattered with yellow paint walks off of the field. Another player has an itchy trigger finger, and this splattered opponent has yellow disgrace all over his new camouflage.
Each player that can be seen from this vantage manages to carry quite a bit of equipment strapped onto belts and pockets. Paint balls and grenades are carried in containers strapped to belts. I notice various kinds of guns with different tanks and barrels. One opponent creeps slowly carrying a gun with an extended barrel and a large heavy metal tank wrapped in camouflage connected to the lower back of the gun. His gun has a jagged trigger that is longer than most others I can see. The gun looks less like a gun and more like skinny bone sized mechanicals connected with blood vessels. Co2 seeps out of the holes of the gun giving the barrel and handles white stripes of frozen exhaust. The greenish hopper rattling slowly with ammo is carried high on top of his gun. My camouflaged hopper is too full of ammunition to rattle, keeping my position secret from enemies. Extra hoppers hang off belts and in special buttoned pockets. My mask both protects me and blinds me. Every few moments, fog has to be wiped away by the towel I keep stashed away in my thick sleeve.
The clothes along with skill change each player into a chameleon. Masks, helmets, pant, and body armor are all covered with camouflage and mud. Clothes are thick and darkened to a muddy brown. Clothing becomes damp with the environments sweat as I push through forest thickness. A tall fellow at the opposite end of the field wears thick army pants with complementing gloves and a torn body armor that must have met the threaded tires. The monster truck tires have probably snuck up on him once or twice. His boots are weighty and thick becoming covered in mud. He sinks back and becomes an animal or a bush in his own tailored hulk of camouflage.
This battle scene is exhilarating to all the senses. Both the distracting environment and the powerful violence of this place can be overcoming. This place grabs all attention from normal thinking, and forces natural instincts to dominate over normal habit. The field is a ferocious forest and the people are wild warriors. This oversized game board plays a new kind of game for me. With weapons in hand, rules are forgotten. This little world is not just my backyard it is a battlefield.

      Christianne Dayawon
      Keith Adv. Am. Lit
      Due: 10.19.07 Per. 4
      ROUGH DRAFT (2)

      “What’s in a Name?â€Â

The Crucible was written by Arthur Miller in 1953. The story takes place in 1692 in the town on Salem, Massachusetts where chaos is inevitable. The cry of witchcraft is heard throughout the small town by a group of girls all claiming to have been visited by the souls of those in association with the devil. The accusations are, of course, a hoax, led by Abigail Williams, the manipulative niece of Reverend Parris. The charade starts as a result of Abigail’s selfishness. She wants Elizabeth Proctor, wife of John Proctor, to die so that she can assume a relationship with the latter. Abigail wanted to be with John because they had previously been intimate with one another. John, however, is through with Abigail and that is when all the problems ensue. Accusations of witchery spread and no one is safe from being condemned and hanged. The accused are condemned to hang by the signature of Deputy Governor Danforth, the judge of the General Court and a well respected man. If John Proctor had just explained Abigail’s intentions from the beginning or if Danforth had used better judgment the story would have ended in an entirely different way. In the end, many lives are taken, including John Proctor’s. Many deaths could have been avoided if John Proctor and Danforth had just relinquished their good names.
Deaths in the story were not imminent. John Proctor could have helped prevent the taking of lives in the story if he had told people about his relationship with Abigail. Abigail first shows signs of mischief when John declines Abigail’s offer to bed her again. Abigail is angered and talks of how Elizabeth Proctor is ruining her name when she says, “She is blackening my name…like a--†(1) At this point, Abigail’s envy and hatred for Elizabeth Proctor is apparent. Soon afterward, Betty, Reverend Parris’s daughter who is supposedly ill, goes ballistic and Reverend Parris and others come into the room frantically inquiring about the happenings. If John Proctor had told the people that Betty was acting the way she was because she had heard of John and Abigail’s relationship, the reason for Abigail’s dancing and practicing of voodoo the previous night would have been palpable. The people would have realized that Abigail was trying to do away with Elizabeth. Instead of Abigail crying witchery against others, Abigail would have been the one accused with practicing witchcraft and many people would have been able to keep their lives.
John Proctor was one of the accused. Abruptly after he is accused he confesses his sin to help save the rest of the people condemned to hang. He says, “I have known her, sir. I have known her.†(2) This indicates that he has committed lechery and that Abigail who was supposedly “saintly†was actually just another sinner. This starts the trickle of doubt within everyone’s heart. John Proctor finally forgoes his good name but it is too little, too late. At this point, Danforth does not know whom to believe. As to what will happen soon after this point on, it is up to Danforth’s good judgment.
Danforth finally figures out how to find out which person was being honest. He orders Reverend Parris to call Elizabeth Proctor into the room without informing her of anything. John claims that Elizabeth has never and will never lie and that Elizabeth will admit to Abigail being a harlot. Elizabeth is then questioned about why she fired Abigail. Elizabeth is hesitant, not knowing what to say. She says, “I thought I saw my husband turning from me… I came to think he fancied her. And so one night I lost my wits… and put her on the high road.†(3) Danforth then asks if John had ever committed lechery. She replies with a faint, “No, sir.†Elizabeth had only said this to protect John’s good name because she knew that he had great pride in it. If only John had not put so much pride into his name and Elizabeth had told the truth knowing that John would not mind so much if she had blackened his name. Abigail would have been proved a fraud and although some had been hanged already, the hangings to come would have been prevented.
Having people hanged was not an unusual prospect for Danforth. Under his “good judgment,†many were condemned to hang by his signature. At this point Danforth is confident that he made the right decision of continuing the hangings. He is confident that is, until Reverend Parris brings news to cause him doubt. Parris says,
“My niece, sir… I believed she has vanished… This be the third night… She told me she would stay a night with Mercy Lewis… next day… she does not return… My Daughter tells me how she heard them speaking of ships… tonight I discover my…strongbox is broke into.â€Â(4)

This reveals Abigail’s true nature to Danforth. He only then realizes that John Proctor had been telling the truth all along.
The truth, however, would not be enough to stop the hangings. Danforth states, “There will be no postponement.†(5) Danforth’s good name was the reason for this. If Danforth were to postpone or stop the hangings, then his title will be questioned. People will accuse him of not having good judgment and his name would forever be soiled. If, however, Danforth had owned up to his mistake, the lives of those on the list to hang, one being John Proctor, would have been saved. Danforth apparently, just did not want to admit the error of his ways.
If John Proctor and Deputy Governor Danforth had just eschewed their good names, many deaths would have been avoided. John Proctor could have prevented chaos if he had just admitted his sins from the beginning instead of thinking about his good name. Elizabeth Proctor did not help the situation when she lied to protect her husband’s good name. Danforth, who could have stopped the hangings after finding out the truth did not do so in order to protect his title. Reputation means everything in society today. Many would go to the extreme to preserve their good names.

I'm not that big of a hot dog enthusiast. But when I was looking for names back in the early 90's, Frankfurter wasn't taken yet, so I had to use hot dog pictures almost as a requirement.
