The not girlfriend and I made it official..

      She's *not* my girlfriend.

      Shit happens, I guess...

    • We had plans (sort of) for a vacation...

      tomii

I was gonna fly the kids and myself out to Seattle for the week of 4th of July.  Been saving up

      airfare: ~$4k

      Hotel: ~$1k

      Rental car: ~$600

      Food: ~$400

      Stuff: ~$500

      Total: ~$6500

(Lots of saving, tax returns, etc)

      But....

Leah needed braces: My half ~$2k

Big girls' heat pump died: Replacement ~$3k

      ....

      Update...

Dad-mobile had to go in to shop: $1500 because I couldn't fix it due to my gimp leg...

      ....

      Total remaining vacation fund: ~$0

      So...

Instead of flying to Seattle, we'll drive to Maine...

No rental car to buy, No airfare - that'll knock enough off total costs that we should still have some fun.

We'll still go to Maine, but it may now involve camping...

    • Some days, motivation is hard to come by...

This is the first time I've even used my computer in about 5 weeks.  Guess it mostly still works.

And this place is getting less and less the place it used to be.  Is anyone still watching this spot?  I haven't even had much of a reason to log in here in a couple months.

I'm proud of Adam - he saved all his allowances, birthday money, etc for almost a year.  He bought himself an XBox 1S.  Came with a 1 yr gamestop replacement warrantee, Sea of Thieves, and Halo 1-4.  We've been playing too much Halo, recently.

I had been planning a relatively expensive trip for the kids and myself out to Seattle for a week over July 4th.  Airfare alone (for 5) is about $4k.

      buuuUuuut...

Leah needs braces - my half of that was $1900.  The AC in the big girls' room conked out.  Another couple thousand there.

So, we might drive up to Maine that week instead - at least that saves us over $3500 for travel.

My timeshare.  FML...  Damned thing costs me ~$1k each year, and I haven't used it in 2.  It breaks even if I can use it once a year, but I've tried the last 2 years with no exchanges available where I want to go.  Bitches.  I'm considering donating it to a veterans' organization & taking a goodly-sized write-off on my taxes this year.  Haven't decided yet.

Still no girlfriend.  Kinda stopped looking for a while.  Not given up, but just getting comfortable with myself & doing whatever the hell *I* I  wanna do, whenever I want to do it.  Too bad it usually ends up being whatever the kids want to do or working.  C'est la guerre, I guess.

My mom came out for a long weekend.  She gave me $500 for an early father's day gift.  I've started drawing up and designing my grill.  I'll post pix sometime, somewhere, when it's done.  It'll be a gas grill with lava rocks made from a 55 gal drum.

Work on truck is still at a standstill.  I'm hoping to get some work done on it this year (hopefully a working drive train), but I have to figure out how to get the block up somewhere to have some work done on it.  (The irony, I need a truck to fix my truck)

I'm doing a slow-burn looking for a new job.  I'm bored as shit at my current one, and after almost 7 years, I'm beginning to think it's a dead-end.  I love the people I work with, but...  I'm not real happy with the direction things seem to be going.  I've been primarily working Business Development for going on 5 or 6 months, now, and I really just want some good design work.  The place I *might* go to sounds like a good match if I can avoid fucking things up, but there's a lot of contingencies that need to happen before the change can take place...

I bought myself the complete "Game of Thrones" boxed set of paperbacks for Christmas.  Got them in Jan, started reading them in early Feb.  Just finished them this afternoon.  That was a lot of pages.

Been futzing around with Raspberry Pi's for a few weeks, now, in my copious free time.  I can make lights blink, I can remote desktop into them, and I have a pi 0 I'm trying to turn into a silly camera project.  woo.

Still teaching "Basic Electronics for Makers" at Annapolis Makerspace every couple of weeks.

    • Rube Goldberg Etch-A-Sketch

      tomii

This seems like one of those "why the hell did you do this?" things, but trust me, there was a reason.

Besides, it was fun, and will maybe do someone some good. This is the most complicated Etch-A-Sketch you've ever seen.

It's a 2-axis gantry with a tool head that carries a servo motor. It's all controlled manually with a joystick for X/Y, and 2 big buttons for Z.

All plastic parts were designed & modeled by myself, and printed on my Ultimaker 2+.

An Arduino Uno at the controller encodes the controls and sends them down to the machinery. There, another Arduino Uno receives the data and converts it into motions for the machine.

It's big enough to write on an 5.5 x 11 sheet of paper. It uses a 12V brick power supply.

The 2 videos below - the first one shows it in action a bit better, I think, but is in a not-quite-complete state.

Most days I don't give a shit about my ex. She can be off doing whatever, and I don't care. But today, I really don't like her. Today, she's just a fucking birch whore...

      No, nothing happened (this time)...

Just sitting here pondering my existence and lamenting me having spent 20 years with that bitch, letting her tear me down while I just tried to be a good person.

I was stupid, and except for the kids I feel like I wasted 20 yrs of my life, and I feel kind of shut out of life in general, and I guess I'm really not pissed at her so much as myself, but she's an easy target.

      So there. :b

    • Just had a neck injection

      tomii

      An "epidural" "nerve block"

Basically, they just injected some pain reliever and steroids into my neck to help alleviate a bunch of pain I've been having for a while...

      Backstory (in a nutshell):

*I complain to doc that neck won't stop hurting. Going on several months.

*Doc orders MRI, X-Ray, and sonogram *results - I posted "findings" previously, but C5-6 is basically gone.

*Go to Ortho/Neuro doc (turns out he's about the best in the region) He tells me:

"Well, hey, you are *really* flexible. That's amazing how flexible you are, you should do yoga! You're so flexible, in fact, that it's kept you from being in pain a lot longer than most people - most people would be in agony by now, and would've been complaining some time ago... But, you're so flexible, that you haven't noticed it until it's progressed to this point. A lot of my colleagues would ohp right on having you get a fusion, but we can do a 45 minute surgery to put some plastic in your neck - artificial disks are real good.

      ...

*BUT*... you're so far progressed that I'm going to recommend that we do nothing - it's probably going to fuse itself in about 3 months. You'll just wake up one morning, and it won't hurt any more!

... In the mean time, go to this pain management specialist and this physical therapist (they're some of the best in the area, they have ravens & redskins as patients). If the pain gets too bad, come talk to me again..."

So... I took his advice (although I'm having 2nd thoughts that it might be better to get a disk replacement instead of letting it fuse (he says I'll only lose about 2% range of motion) for a lot of little annoying reasons...

So, today was the injections for pain management. We'll see, I guess...

Not demo, but bomber racing. XD Season starts in Feb, and I should hopefully be able to have her running and altered by then!!

Finding rings is no problem. They are ALL OVER eBay (Praise Cheezus for eBay motors). I was trying to be cheap and sneaky and was using a hose clamp instead of an actual compression tool. It lead to many hours of swearing, and then finally, I broke a ring. So I have to re-order those AND a proper compression tool. I guess they say "right tool for the job" for a reason.

Blarg. HOWEVER, once I get the pistons back in, the rest of the engine should be a-ok for a start up.... And of course, I probably just jinxed myself. *sigh*

How goes your projects? Or is it finally too cool in your land to be spending hours outside tinkering? Or are your comp issues eating up any extra funding for now?

Well, I lost 280lbs in my divorce (40 of it mine, the rest was the ex's), so I know what you mean. The difference is I put on 60lbs after the accident so I had it to lose.

Take the job that pays the most, first. Once you have that paycheck coming in, the stress level will drop quite a bit. As to the weight loss, eating right and exercising does wonders.

I've gained 10lbs since I started this new job, but I've lost an inch or two off my waist. I bust my ass every day, but I sleep at night and wake up feeling pretty good about myself.

You're far more educated than I am, so finding a decent job isn't that far off. Just remember to go into every interview like you already work there. Treat the interviewer like they are already your employer. Instead of questions like "So, this is what you do here?" rephrase it as " So, this is what we do here?"

      Subtle, yet important...

    • Megan327

That's because I'm almost nearly always ready to put shit away & help out someone else - gets my mind off shit, if nothing else.

But, when I'm sitting around in an empty house with no one to talk to or look at but my own dumb reflection... Well...

Yea, I'm with you there on that one.

We all have problems, and we all have to deal with them. We get knocked on our ass, we need to stand up and get back to work. That's the way the cosmic soap opera works. But you have to be willing to let others help carry the load sometimes. That's when you find out who your friends are, right?

Or who else is going through something similar. But yea, I've found out who my real friends are in the past few days. Though I'm out of contact (no cell phone). The genuine friends are showing up, or calling me on the house phone. Wish there were teleporters, so I'd say come on over, you can drink to your heart's content. Though I'm not letting either one of us open up my rifle case.

So, last night, I had a couple beers with my one friend from work whom I've told all about it, and he got the chance to pay me back a bunch of the mentoring I've given him the last couple of years, and that's greatly appreciated (John, from the letter)

So, intellectually, I know it's gonna be better down the road - it's just right this instant that it seems pretty bleak. Especially when you have to go through stuff without a real support structure. But it'll get better, and hopefully, in a couple of years, I'll be in a better place. Doors are always opening and closing, and while they don't always open & close at the same time, fuck, my metaphor just croaked.

...When they do open, the opportunity is beyond what is the need." Is that what you were looking for?

Anyway, we'll both get through our current problems, and in the end, we'll both be fine. Or dead. Both are inevitable. God keeps a certain care of those that do their best, and best I can tell, he doesn't give us more than we can actually handle. It's just up to us to learn how to handle it.

Yup. Though right now maybe we're both not to be beating ourselves up over it. We've got family that cares about us, and understands both situations. How about we both make a deal that says any negative thought (what if/should have/could have/wish I'd known/etc), and just not go through that thought process. We have family that's been with us, and will forgive us. We just have to stop seeing the negative, and go to the good.

Our "troubleshooting chart" we use for fixing shooting errors has you pegged at focusing on the target for the 200yd. When it looks like a shotgun blast and it hits every where BUT the black, the shooter is looking at the target and not the front sight post. and you have to adjust the sling for each position. Each position requires a different tightness to assist you the best. I would use a marker or a stitch of thread at each position to be able to repeat the pull on the sling.

At our range, we have to build our own target frame that we have to hump down. Not a big deal, as it's pretty light, but in yesterday's wind, it made a good sail!

And, I only have one made up, so it's a trip back & forth every set of shots. Figure at 150 & 200, I have to hike out to see the impact points (can't see holes in the black with the club-supplied spotting scopes), and I'm burning a fair amount of time.

One problem I do have, though is the targets. That big 100 yd bull is hard for me to shoot. I actually usually use 20 yd pistol targets at 100 yds, as I lose the front post in the black. Throws me off. The down side, of course, is this makes the bull about half (or less) of the post. D'oh.

And, I'm way out of practice, so hopefully I'll get a little better as the season progresses. I'm most worried about the off-hand at 50, as I'm not a real stable platform any more.

Okay. I didn't have time to watch the video. It's correct though. You have to zero the sights to zero the weapon. I guess I misunderstood and thought you were moving the front sight post at each of the different yard lines.

I understand about going foe the "center of the triangle" for shot grouping. I guess we are instructed so much precision that a large group would distract me from the true purpose.

I know CTD and Midway will will mil spec slings. I have a rather generic ranch sling that I started my M1A with. I also have the leather match sling for it. On top of more stability, the sling provides pretty decent speed. During snap in we prepare our sights and aling and then, like qhat is in the data book, we zero our sights with our first ten rounds at the 300. Granted we have our sister relay in the pits to pull amd spot targets but I understand about humping up and down the range all day. All of my shooting so far has been one trip to the 100 yd line and four targets to shoot at each day.

Read your journal comment and let me know when I'm being an insensitive ass because I'm not physically there to see what's going on.

depends on what you want drawn, the more complex / time consuming , the more expensive it will be. And I have a minimum charge of $50 (but I'll do a lot for fifty bucks)

Well since it would only be just me living there, I think a 2 car garage is decent enough. smiley8.gif
