..... I'm feeling better and am happy Spring has finally arrived! It's difficult to type one handed as my big cat sits in my lap and demands the other hand be stroking his neck or he becomes totally obnoxious!
...... My days still begin early, the animals don't let mom sleep late. I do my best in the early morings getting housework done and meals prepared for those that are getting up and out for work and school. First it's our early morning walk the dog, then feed the furries breakfast while I watch the news and then get everyone up who needs to and feed them. Another walk the dog for her morning sniff around the neighborhood and then back home for more cleanup after everone leaves for the day.
.....I've been slowly going through boxes from our storage, that habitate in our garage, even after so many years after my Dad passing I still find it hard to deal with boxes of things he's left behind with us. You hate to throw out momentos of his life, but in the same sense as I need to make room for my van slowly so that when winter comes again, my van will be under cover, in the garage. I have to be careful with my back, not to strain moving boxes and such, I went through a terrible experience of pain after the move. It took months to get feeling better and pain pill free again.
....I will try to scan all the journals and such when I can, but don't expect alot of feedback when I don't get much computer time! Hope everyone is doing well. Maggie May

.....It seems that whenever I try to do something on this site-----my computer or the site itself keeps freezing up!
Is anyone else having this trouble? Hubby claims it has to be RVB, because he hasn't had trouble elsewhere!

.....On the homefront---daughter brought home a dog, for me of course, which means I'm responsible for feeding, training, walking, cleaning and caring for said dog! I've wanted one for awhile now, and when I get the chance I'll post pictures! She's a sweet and beautiful white/cream colored pekingnese! The sense of security is increased now for me being alone so much! Cats just don't alert you to anything other than earthquakes and thunder storms! LOL, Oh and coyotes! LOL

.....Daughter is all registered for college and just has to pay the tuition by September 2nd! She is either working or running with friends for the summer, too independent to need Mom much anymore except for a meal and some laundry when she checks in! LOL

Hope everyone is doing fine.....Maggie May

.....Got the potato salad prepared, next I'm fixin' some pizza pasta salad, lol! Going to a party, and the the fireworks over the river! Hubby should get home just in time for the fireworks!
.....The weather has been very warm and dry, I just hope we won't have any fires, the fireworks are banned in town, but the rural areas will probably be crackling with fireworks all over, come sundown! Yeehaa!
.....I grew up in a state where the fireworks were restricted to just sparklers, the only time I ever blew off anything large was when we bought some on our trip south to New Orleans! Now, they just started restricting more and more in this state, the fire dangers have alot to do with it! I'm not really missing it though. I do wish they'd have a town display!
.....Everyone have a safe holiday and I'll see about getting caught up another day! Maggie May!

    • Graduation

.....My daughter graduated from high school yesterday with honors! When reviewing the photos my husband took with our digital camera, there was an anomally. On the one picture he took of her getting the diploma, a large 'orb' is suspended above her! It seems that along with hubby and I being proud as peacocks for our lovely daughter, my father, who called her his little angel, put in his appearence!
......Now, I know some people won't buy the idea of a spiritual presence approving daughters achievements, however the important thing is we know that he is still her gaurdian from beyond and will always watch over her with the love of a proud grandfather!
......After the ceremonies were over, we came back home and the young people went out to join friends, while hubby and I had 'dinner and a movie' together to celebrate another stage completed in our parenting! After all, our children are 'our children' for the rest of our lives, it's just that now we love with open arms and guide her into independence and on to college this fall!
.....We managed to save enough money to get her a brand new laptop for her graduation gift, which she is 'tickled' with! Her bosses were extremely generous as well as all our friends and neighbors. She had an old friend drive in from another state to spend a week with her, and the classmates she had moved away from three years ago! I've managed to get my house in order for the time being, and now that daughter has her own computer, I'll get some time on the desk setup and hope to catch up with everything here!
.....Hope everyone is having a great day,,,,Love ya.... Maggie May

He's going fishing in the Cascade River for the big ones!
Guess it's time to drag the smokers out of storage! LOL

.....I get to stay home and clean house! On the bright side, garden is growing fine and the weather has been hot!
I wish I could spend the hot day in a cool theater, there are so many movies I'd like to see!
Think I'll take some steaks out of the freezer and let the hubby cook dinner tonight on the grill!

.....I do need more sleep though, having monster-in-law nightmares again!

.....Hope everyone is fine and has a good week...............Maggie May!

    • Cascading Power Outage!

      travlr

.....One car hitting a power pole caused power to go out in four counties. It's called a cascading effect when the grid protects itself by shutting down power to one area after another! We were 30 miles away from the accident, so I heard about the crash on the scanner before we lost power. I also heard the police request assistance from the fire departments to direct traffic in the shopping areas ,where all the intersections, without functioning traffic signals, were jamming up with more car wrecks!
.....Daughter was with her friend, downriver, at the hospital where they brought some of the five people into the emergency room. Two were airlifted to the Seattle trauma center, one is not expected to recover from her head injury. They were a group of Ethiopian immigrants on their way to work at the nursing home near the hospital. I'm praying for the car crash victims. The views of the damage done to the power poles on the news this morning shows how much damage one car can do.
.....It happened about 5:45PM our time that our power went out, turning on the battery opperated radio, we listened to people calling from all four counties, just amazed at how the electricity went out without a storm!
.....I was amazed at how few people knew about the possibility of this type of thing happening. Where were these people when it happened on the east coast, causing most of the New England states to go dark!
.....Being a mom, of course I spent the next few hours worrying about the young ones, daughter and friend, driving home. They ended up at the hospital when her friends grandmother went into the hospital with chest pains. They were visiting her home and when she got stubborn and insisted on driving herself 15 miles to the hospital, the girls followed her to make sure she arrived safe and stayed with her to make sure she was okay while the doctors checked her out! Then they followed her home, having five intersections with signals not functioning to get through and also getting detoured around the accident scene!
.....I guess you could say it was one bizarre evening! We only lost power for two hours at our home, but alot of others had a longer wait to get their power turned back on. I wonder if it helped that when I called in our outage, I told the opperator about the accident that was the cause! Sometimes it really pays to listen to the scanner. When there's only two highways to get upriver and one is blocked, it's a long way around to get to cross the river and get home!
.....The Seattle news claims that over one hundred thousand homes were without power, of course these four counties are mainly rural, and the cities are small, being the very northwest corner of the country! Hope everyone is safe and sound and enjoy your weekend!
......I know I've had enough drama to last me awhile! Our refineries were scaring people as they had to burn off all the fuel in their fires! LOL
.....Maggie May.....P.S. Just learned the power lines to provide backup service had been taken offline, bad timing to learn risks taken by power companies!

.....Now that winter is waning in most parts of the country, I have been reminded of a winter sight I only discovered once I moved from the midwest to a mountain area! Frozen Waterfalls are an example of ice at it's most beautiful state, not always frozen solid but still cascading down the side of a cliff or mountainside. Now for Stoneswords request of pictures, I have to admit that these were taken off the internet, but are examples of what I mean!

      450climbing2.jpg
      450climbing3.jpg
The last two photos were taken from a Seattle newspaper of two 'ice climbers' exploring a frozen waterfall!
The idea of water freezing in motion is a wonder, however the icicles hanging from rooftops are a fine example of just that!

I always assemble the pie dough a day ahead and refrigerate, then roll out between large sheets of plastic wrap right before filling

I"ve never had any luck with piecrust - I've tried more and less shortening and more and less flour and more and less cold water.... I've tried refrigerating - you name it - I've tried it. It always tears and falls apart when I transfer to the pie dish.

SO - now I buy the refrigerated Pillsbury piecrusts -they come premade - and I unroll them - put them in the dish, fill, cover and bake! Looks homemade, tastes pretty darn good and I don't have a messy kitchen and frazzled nerves!

My favorite pie is mincemeat - but I'm the only one in my family who likes it - so it spoils before I can eat a whole pie - so I end up not having any.... smiley2.gif

Good to hear from you - you've been far too quiet for too long! smiley12.gifsmiley12.gif

Haven't heard from you in a while. Hope everything is going well for you. Things have been crazy here between working a part time, full time job, son going nuts in Baghdad and a daughter in law that had a two month preemie baby by emergency C-section. It was touch and go for a while though between the baby needing help breathing and DIL developing a nasty infection. Both she and the baby squeaked through and are doing well now. Hay is cut and bailed, weather is turning cold, foggy and clammy and I fear winter is approaching. Dear Wife has a honey do list ten miles long so I'm off to the races. Best wishes, DadHavoc

My spouse and I want very much to 'hold onto' the family homestead. It unfortunately needs at LEAST $200,000 in repairs, improvements, maintenance. smiley3.gif . I will do whatever I can to keep them comfortable in their own home as long as possible. When the inevitable happens - then I have to "deal" with my sister's desire to be 'rid' of it - she thinks it's pretty worthless and unsellable (she's a realtor) - and thinks we can't get what my folks paid for the property 50 years ago out of it ($10,000 in 1959). The property is 3.5 acres and has a brook running through it - lovely old sugar maples, oaks, pines, and original stone wall boundary walls. The foundation is hand hewn granite slabs, the beams are hand hewn with wooden 'nails' - in the oldest part of the house. I love the place - uneven floors, unsquare walls, lousy plumbing and mouse population and all! smiley12.gif

I know exactly what you are saying. I'm only on two prescriptions but a bunch of vitamins. The two prescriptions warn against alcohol consumption so I'm stuck with root beer. Fortunately for me, there is a micro brewery near here that also makes some of the best root beer ever. I am sure you will get a laugh out of this. One of the prescriptions is for being insulin resistant and gives me the same hot flashes (flushing as they call it) that Dear Wife suffers from. Nighttime can be hilarious as the two of us take turns kicking blankets off. The dogs and I did sit on the swing last night and watched the lightning off in the distance. I only wish DW had been here to share it.

This may give her the general idea, that when that time comes she can inexpensively have the dress of her dreams if her mom is willing to make it for her.
My best friend when I was in my twenties had a rainbow wedding, with her large family, I was the only friend out of five bridesmaids! Her mother and her made all the dresses with the bridesmaids doing the finishing touches at a party just for that purpose! It was a productive bachelorette party, followed by the one where we all had a few drinks at the local watering hole! LOL All the gowns turned out beautifully and less expensive than any store prices. It was during a recession of the seventies!

    • TheEvenStar

I have a wedding picture of my parents with the gown her mom made just for her. An original creation using her skills from her experiences professionally working for others

I have 'dreams' of Veela asking me to make her a gown someday - but I'm not going to push the subject. This project will certainly teach me a few of the skills needed to work with expensive fabrics and elaborate decorations (embroidery, beading, trims, etc..)

    • TheEvenStar

I've made a couple costumes for others - but I find it difficult to create for others at best - and charging someone to do it - I don't know. I'm never completely satisfied with my results and not sure I'd want to charge someone for a product that they might not be happy with - especially when the cost of materials runs high - then adding anything for my time and effort makes it too expensive.....
If / when I make this Requiem gown - between materials, supplies, equipment, and my time - this gown will be over $1000 - ouch! (I'm extimating the number of hours it will take at my current rate of pay - and probably underestimating my # of hours by half! )

He will have to have more withheld from his pay - so he doesn't have to pay again next year. He is finding out that turning 18, becoming an 'adult' has it's downside! Taxes and bills!
