Honestly, I really, really enjoyed the movie. I wasn't expecting much out of this movie, I just hoped that it would be as entertaining as other narrative content that RT put out like RvB and RWBY, and Rooster Teeth delivered. It nailed the direction that they were going for, which is "The Rooster Teeth Movie" and not "Rooster Teeth: The Movie".
There wasn't much references to RT, in fact, I don't recall any references. Sure, there were easter eggs here and there like the X-Ray cosplay or Mindy's RWBY laptop cover or Chris. They blended well in the background and didn't steal the light from the story. The acting was great overall, Burnie and Michael were great. My only complaint among the RT cast was Gavin's accent in the beginning when he was trying to do an american accent. It sounded a little off to me but I suppose changing your accent on your first major gig is not an easy task so props to Gav for trying his best.
The story was not without its flaws. It was pretty cliched and I didn't really feel that Adam's(Alan) death had the impact they wanted nor was Hagan's(Burnie) reaction that warranted. I thought that the resolution was...ok... I suppose? Shooting two beams of dark matter together creates a black hole-esque portal that sucks everything in is kinda... eh whatever, I'm here to be entertained, not get a degree in astrophysics.
The CGI was...passable, it kinda bothered me in the beginning, but overall, the less than ideal CGI took the backseat and didn't draw me out of the movie. However, for a budget of slightly over 2.5million, I say it's pretty solid.
I didn't really like some of the editing decisions but they were kinda minor so I wasn't really that bothered by it. NDT's cameo was pretty unexpected and it was fun. I did feel that they went a little overboard with the news footage though.
Overall, the movie checked my boxes by being entertaining, funny, decently written and well directed. 7/10
