      (working title)

I mentioned this a month or so ago, and I'm working on a site specifically for it, but right now I'm giving you all the first heads up.

      Yes, all three of you.

So here's a quick rundown on what I'm doing: I'm "interviewing"/compiling videos of people who've seen Watchmen and getting their opinions and ideas on certain aspects of the story. This can be people who've seen the film but haven't read the comics, vice-versa, or those who know both. I'm going to compile a list of questions/topics and put them out for those willing to participate. My primary focus is on the moral dilemma in both the comics and the film, what people think of it and how they feel about it. And of course, if you were in that situation, what would you do? There'll be more questions and topics, but that's essentially the primary focus. The idea is just to get people talking. WB spent over 100 million dollars making this movie and the main idea, really, is to make you think. (Read David Hayter's open letter and you'll get my point)

It doesn't have to be fancy - record it with your laptop's webcam, your still cameras MPEG movie mode, your $10,000 HD camcorder - whatever. So long as it's video and I can hear you (moderately) well, I'm happy. Once I've got enough of those, the idea is to edit them into...something. I don't know if I'll split videos into topics or just make it one long web doc of sorts, but either way it'll make its way online for the world to see. I'm not selling DVD's or anything, or charging for downloads. Even it evolves into an hour long documentary (and who would take the time to watch that, anyway?), it'll be online for free. Even if I'm just sent small sized webcam videos, I'm still going to do the bulk of my own shooting in HD, so I'll probably throw a 720p or maybe 1080p version up on BitTorrent or something.

So really, the idea of this is just to get people thinking and talking. Whether you liked the movie or hated it, chances are it got you thinking or talking about it. Well keep on doing it. Lets show the internet that there's more to us then the Aint it Cool News talkbackers.

Interested? Send an email to lovethesquid [at] gmail.com and I'll send you more info as it's available.

And if you think it's a dumb idea... well fuck you. You're ugly.

    • So maybe someone can explain to me

why Robert Rodriguez can't seem to get Sin City 2 off the ground, but can make this without any problem at all?

It's like his kids go "daddy daddy make a dumb movie we can laugh at", and he drops everything he's doing and goes "lol k" and gets studios to spend $50 million on it.

I'm not even sure I'd want to see that if I was ten.

dumbest title ever. Of all time.

To catch all of you up (both of you), I decided to sell my iPhone and get a phone that's a little less taxing on the bank account. After arguing with myself for christ knows how long, I finally narrowed it down to two phones.

      The Samsung a737
      samsung-sgh-a737-cell-phone-review-1.jpg

      and the BlackBerry Pearl 8110
      blackberry-pearl-8110-pics.jpg

While I like the sliding design and overall interface of the a737, I found out I send some 1500+ texts a month and I think losing the qwerty keypad would downright kill me these days. Plus I really dig the BlackBerry in general. While both can have a 3G data plan, the BB runs the interwebs a little better. What's making me lean more towards the 737, again, is that I can pick that sucker up on ebay for considerably less than the blackberry. (although the iPhone unlocked will sell for over the price of both, so thats not a TOTAL deal breaker).

Anyone have any experience on either of these phones? Or a recommendation of your own? I would totally appreciate help on this.

Seeing as it was an unfinished workprint (and unlike other workprints I've seen, this one is VERY CLEARLY unfinished), I won't review it until the movie comes out. This print, to my understand, is missing footage from reshoots, and overall just isn't polished.

I will say though, I enjoyed what I saw. Which I was surprised by, as I'm not really an XMEN fan.

    • Oh my.

Just finished reading the 1989 draft of Watchmen.

Back when 20th Century Fox was producing it.

Dear christ. It could have been the worst movie ever made. Thank you, Fox, for settling the court case and never, ever touching Watchmen. Ever.

That said, please, dismantle yourself and never produce another movie again. Ever.

      For the sake of humanity.

    • Manhattan stops 9/11?

      uber_chaos

So I just got done reading Alex Tse's 2006 draft of the Watchmen screenplay. While both David Hayter (the voice of Solid Snake) and Tse are credited as writers on the finished product, the bulk of the movie comes from Hayter's script (along with an uncredited rewrite that Zack Snyder, Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman did when Tse was unable to polish the script.)

This journal entry is spoiler heavy, and I find the spoiler tag system to be pretty dumb. If you don't want spoilers about the movie, go ahead and stop reading right here.

Some key points of the screenplay:

-The story is rewritten to take place in the present, shifting the Cold War setting to that of the war on terror and fighting in the middle east. Dr. Manhattan is credited with preventing the 9/11 attacks. This is described in a scene where one child on the street pretends to be Manhattan, as another..pretends to the be the hijacked planes. I don't know. You tell me.
-Rorschach is a very different character. He seems like a perfectly normal person sometimes and like his regular sociopath-self others. His first journal entry was completely rewritten, and it just didn't seem to flow.
-Alot of scenes and dialogue snippets seem much more moved around, and some scenes I consider vital are missing entirely, even to this version of the story. The Veidt-Manhattan energy project isn't as fleshed out as it needed to be for the climax, and a few scenes with Dan and Laurie are missing. Now this does feature a few scenes/dialogue that were in the comic but not the movie, however seeing them in screenplay form, I understand why they were cut.
-And now possibly my least favorite addition, and this was actually in Hayter's original script as well if I remember correctly: Dan (Nite Owl) kills Veidt (Ozymandias) at the end. They get into a fight, Veidt breaks his arm, and then Dan uses a nite owl Batarang type thing and kills Ozzy. It just...didn't work. It didn't make sense. It's almost like Hayter and Tse missed the point. Or they just wanted a Hollywood happy ending. Either way, I'm glad Snyder, Orci and Kurtzman did away with it.

In the end, I have to give Warner Bros. props for not completely bitching out, and giving Snyder a chance to tell the story as it was meant.

Also, I'm still working on a review of the actual movie. You'll see that. Eventually. Now if you'll excuse me, I have the Inglourious Basterds script sitting here as well.

This is possibly the funniest yet truest thing I've heard in a long while.

      [ click click ]

The funniest thing about this, however, is the people I play it for that laugh the hardest and then say how true it is and how bitchy people are, are the people I know who are the WORST about this kind of thing.

(That said, that includes me as well. I'm guilty of the plane thing more than anything.)

However please note that the cosmetic side of the site is still been done! So it looks pretty bare!
