      Okay, so Penny Arcade is currently running a Kickstarter to remove ads from their website. A major website moving away from the advertising model? Sounds good right? Well...

      Before I go too far off, I want to talk about what they have done right in the past. After the whole Prince of Persia: Warrior Within debacle (wherein they advertised the hell out of the game on their site prior to release, then proceeded to lambaste it in their comic when it came out), they made a vetting system to ensure they would only advertise things they actually wanted to support. This was an excellent idea, and made sure no there would be no conflicting opinions between what they produced and what they advertised. This also ensured that only quality ads made on to the site, none of the crap that you get on most banner ads. This, to me, is the best way to go about website advertising. Project Wonderful allows a similar process for websites of all sizes, and in so doing lets the site owner retain their integrity.

      Now there's the Kickstarter...where to start? Penny Arcade has made it quite clear in the past that they don't care for Kickstarter, and almost outright hate it. Starting their own has done nothing to change that fact. The perks being offered (at least up and to the $1000 level) are are all but completely pointless. These perks are meant as snide remark on what they feel are valueless offerings made by other crowd funded projects, and by making them they undermine their own fundraising in more ways than one. For one, they make it seem as if not every dollar counts, and only the high-rollers are worthy of their admiration. Secondly, they openly mock anyone that actually donates, which is not gonna sit too well with new people when they see that PA also runs another donation funded charity. Also, if this is also a long-term thing, each following year they'd likely see less donations because people probably won't want to come back each year to basically hear "HAHA, YOU PAID FOR THIS SHIT? THANKS FOR THE MONEY, YOU DUMB FUCK!"

      In almost every other Kickstarter, the perk levels are there to help maintain a certain amount of transparency as to where the money goes. They way that Penny Arcade is offering their rewards, there is no way to track where the money is going, or even to ensure that the perks are given out properly. For example; at the $500 level, Gabe and Tycho will retweet one of your tweets. I somehow doubt that there is a built in penalization in Kickstarter to ensure stuff like that gets done. Given that they have in the past put off, or completely forgotten to make a comic that someone has paid thousands of dollars to charity for, doesn't exactly inspire confidence. Given that the sole goal of this campaign is to remove the ads, misappropriation of funds may be an issue. There's no breakdown as to what departments need what amount of money, so certain parts of the site may get the shaft, and we'd have no way of knowing. They state that any extra money raised will go towards the next years fund, but again, there's no way to enure that happens. I'm not saying that they're gonna go lining their pockets with this money, but there's just too many unknowns for me to ignore.

      Another problem is what this is going to do to other crowd funded projects. PA has a lot of reach, and given that they chose to only show what they consider to be the norm for projects, alongside with their own now, it's going to give a lot of people the wrong impression. Yes, the Double Fine Adventure brought in tonnes of money, and inspired more than a few half-hearted projects that were just attempts at "easy money", but that doesn't mean that crowd funding should not be a viable option. Not everyone has a website with millions of daily visitors and a cult following, and those people should have an equal opportunity to do something they love. As an example, when Brian Vidovic tried to open a gamer-centric bar called EXP, he was hammered again and again with citations and red tape before he could even start. And now, BC liquor laws are stating that he can't have the bar he in way he wishes. To help pay some of his legal fees and make sure that he could keep the doors open past the first month, he started an IndieGoGo campaign that basically offered dollar-for-dollar donation incentives. Because he doesn't have the pull that PA does, he only scraped by and reached his goal just under 24 hours before it's end. If everyone coming into PA's campaign walks away from it thinking that all campaigns are like theirs, it's going to hurt a lot of people who really need it.

      The long and short of it is, the PA Sells Out campaign is mean spirited and unnecessary, and undermines a lot of what they do. Not least of which being "Don't be a dick."

      So as all you fine folks were quick to tell me, I'm the featured user today. Awesome! While I've got the spotlight, I might as well tell you about the event I'm helping to organize called RvB Canwest. Since 2006, RvB Canwest has been putting on screenings and panels for RvB and other awesome gaming related content. My job is currently to help run the charity auctions that are being held to raise funds for the MS Society of Canada, and Child's Play. Be sure to watch that space, as even if you are unable to attend the screening itself, we will be holding online auctions the week of the event so that everyone has a chance to contribute.

      Now if you'll excuse me, I have a very full 18 hour day ahead of me. Laterz!

      Some of the assignments I've been having to do lately have me making do with whatever I've got, resulting in me MacGuyvering studio lighting out of what I have on hand including: making a soft box out of a table lamp, a pillow case, a spatula and some clothes pegs, or making a strip light using a fluorescent desk light, cardboard and toilet paper.

      But every now and again, the Universe throws me a soft ball. For photojournalism this week, we have to shoot a "feature" picture, which is just a one-off, soft news picture, and my teacher recommended shooting weather. Tonight, under a clear sky and a bright half-moon, a thick bank of fog rolled in. Awesome. Done and done.

      Last night, I shot a hockey game as an assignment for my photojournalism class, and it was fun as hell. I got to borrow some crazy awesome lenses, and I ended up getting some great shots. One thing was made abundantly clear, though. My camera is not meant to be doing this kind of work. At the best of times, I could only shoot two frames a second, and I don't know if you've noticed, but hockey games move pretty damn fast. My camera was struggling to even scroll through all the images I shot. I've known for quite some time that I needed to see about getting a new camera, but it was never more apparent than last night.

      Anyhoozle, here are my shots. Enjoy!

      thats my actually Halloween (oct 31) halloween night. I won't do fright night the halloween weekend because I think it would be way too crazy there. Line ups get long anyways, and halloween weekend I think they'd be impossible ^^;
      But I've never been willing to try to find out, either, so I will just continue to not know.

      I'm thinking next saturday (23) for Fright Night.

      far as I can tell, Laird does not believe he can possibly be wrong. And sometimes...I just refuse to back down! MUAHA!
      it was great. we drove right past it, and I pointed it out, at first he tried telling me it wasn't there, and I was all "IT'S RIGHT THERE!!!!OMG!", so when he conceded it was the station he still tried telling me it wasn't the city centre station, so I read it right off the sign for him. At which point he tried claiming that the otherone (Canada Line Waterfront) is ALSO called Vancouver City Centre. Because of course he could NOT be wrong, and the Vancouver city Centre statino couldn't be anywere but where he believed it was.
      I was very amused.

      I did not say the problem was that I couldn't find MATCHING socks....days when I wear matching socks are few and far between. I prefer to just throw all my socks in one drawer and grab at random. and I do NOT own all the same socks. Amy took a picture of my socks at PAX...one was green with monkeys, the other was bright yellow with black, blue and pink stripes. I thought they looked excellent together. Another favourite pair is one black, one pink, black, and white plaid. very nice.

      I liiive...at my house! #308 204 Westhill Place, Port Moody. WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAaaaay away from anywhere decent.
