Sorry, I meant to make a better attempt to stay on top of this thing. Once basketball ended, I spent the rest of that week enjoying a more relaxed evening schedule. Then I realised how little I'd done the rest of the semester, so I entered cram-time for... pretty much every class that wasn't Calc 2.

Somehow things turned out fine - ended up with a 3.23 for the semester. The bad news is that I'm still a year behind in math. Somewhere in the past month we paid a visit to Syracuse University. I didn't drink the Kool-Aid. But it did make me realise some things. For one, D + D != C.

Chemistry didn't get along well with me. I passed, but barely. In both sections. Pretty much anywhere I'd transfer to would have me retake the class. Between that, the math, and the F I got in English 102 last semester, looking like I'd be in for a hell of a time (and likely an extended stay) at a four-year school. So, it's looking like I'll be back at Morrisville in the fall.

But... Jaime's got My Name is Bruce in the Xbox, so I'ma get to paying attention to that. I'll try and update again before another month passes.

So, I kind of forgot about this place. If anyone still remembers I exist, here's a quick run-down of what I've been up to:

Still slinging parts for Advance Auto
Still at SUNY Morrisville for Engineering Science
Turned into a true sports fan, with football and basketball destroying my soul
Rekindled my love-affair with the Gundam franchise.
Recently fell in love with the Suzumiya Haruhi franchise
Now listen to more podcasts/audiobooks than music
Of the music I listen to, J-pop has crawled out in front

I'll try and maintain more of a presence on here from now on (I know, you've heard this before), but my Spartans just lost the NCAA championship. Even though I've been saying since December that UNC was the best in the country, my team still lost. Not. Pleased.

well, I'm donig better than I have been earlier in the year. Sorry, I meant to attempt to be true to my word and actually be on this site a bit more.

Then one of my buddies dropped off the kickoff miniseries and seasons 1-3 of Battlestar Galactica. And it has consumed my soul.

So, now I'm caught up with the broadcast. On the one hand, I hardly know what to do with myself. On the other hand, there's one huge distraction out of my way.

      Well, two things happened:

one, I never received any notification that I had journal/personal/whatever comments. Does this place still do that? the notifications? well, I never got notified, so there was nothing beating me over the head saying "hey, get back on RvB and do stuff!" Which I needed, because...

two, school came out of nowhere and kicked my ass. About a week or two after my last post, I was trying to get things squared away. I don't know if I mentioned it or not, but I was supposed to go on another trip to Niagara Falls. So, yeah, I'm trying to make sure I don't come back from that trip too far behind. Then I see my grades, and then I see how far behind I already managed to be. In hindsight, I really wish more than one of our teachers was nagging us to get stuff in, because all four of us where really behind in everything else. So, yeah, I had to work my ass off to get out of there in one piece. Which I did (barely).

All that finished up a couple weeks ago. I've been recharging my batteries since then. With RvB making new episodes I'm sure I'll be back around here more. For real, this time.

yeah, I know I said three months ago that I was going to start doing things here again. Sorry.

School's a bitch this semester. I have University Physics 2, which isn't that bad. Our teacher, well, isn't really qualified to teach that course. It's easier than it should be. Which is great for now. For University Physics 3 we should have a different teacher. I've met the guy. He knows his head from his ass. We might be boned.

And I have a programming class in Fortran. I hate that with a passion. I can't see myself being a software engineer for specialized military equipment, radar stuff, or high-end, scientific, number crunching research. So while my teacher is going on about how great format statements are, I'm bitching about only having columns 7-72 to work with and thinking of how much easier it'd be to do our programs would be to write in C or Python.

Chemistry isn't so bad this semester. I think it's helped that I developed something resembling a work ethic for that class. That, and our teacher has lightened up significantly. He's not "going easy on us", but he's not Captian Hard Ass any more.

And then there's Engineering Calculus 2. This course is kicking my ass up and down. For one, I took a semester off of math. That's bad. For two, the faculty told me that engineering calculus was "more in depth" than normal calculus. I assumed (and they confirmed, at the time) that meant that engineering Calculus would do more/harder problems on the same material as the normal stuff. Turns out they go another two or three chapters ahead. Didn't find that out until week two of the class. That's bad.

And our teacher's new. New as in "got out of college last spring and started teaching full time last fall" new. She knows the material just fine. She just needs some work teaching it. Of course, she made a bad impression with me right off the bat:

Just barely into the class, I went down there to get help. Some of the problems involved integrating the natural number e to some power, or something of the like. I don't know "e". The first and only time I've dealt with e, natural logs, or just plain normal logs was in my first round of pre-Calculus back in 11th grade. So that was around four years ago. I didn't understand it then, and four years of not applying it didn't help. And... she kind of blew me off. She went through the specific problem I had questions on, went through a short list of general rules, and then said "You don't need to worry about anything else - that's all you need to know for what we're doing right now." I insisted that I wanted help to actually understand logs (all I really know is that it's a deprecated concept in the age of calculators), but she stood by her original assertion.

So, yeah, school's been a bit rough. When I'm done with my work for that, my brain likes to just shut down for a while, and next thing you know I have to go to bed. So, yeah, this has fallen by the wayside for me. Again. Like I said it wasn't going to.

But, like I said, I developed something resembling a work ethic, so things have calmed down a bit. I'll try and be a bit more active from now on.

      first off, Cloverfield:
A bunch of friends and I went to see it last night.

      Thought one:
"I should have just pirated this."

      Thought two:
"Why didn't we all just chip in 50 cents each and rent the original Godzilla?"

I stand by both of those. The whole god damned thing is done HandiCam style. It's all done from the prospective of people running for their lives. Suspensful? Sure. Thrilling? Sure. Humorous? It has its moments, yes.

But there is absolutely no pay-off. The movie doesn't end - it stops. Digging back to one of my old entries, it pulls and Inuyasha on the audience. At the end of the movie you know exactly the same as you did going in (give or take the names of a few characters). Where'd the monster come from? Did it get killed? Is it still on a rampage? Did it just go and hide for a bit? Guess you'll have to wait for the sequel to find out what you wanted to know before you stepped foot into the theater.

Anyway, I know, I meant to start doing things here again. Sorry. I rediscovered my love of football this year. And I'm becoming and SU fan again. And this break, rather than work all the god damned time, I worked just enough to keep me out of poverty and spent a lot of my time actually seeing other friends who were home for break.

So, it's not that I've been "busy", it's just that I've had enough going on where I just kinda... well, forgot about this. Oops.

But school starts up again on Tuesday for me. The first week will be a bitch (my schedule is a mess of massive proportions), but after that.... safe bet I'll be on here more to kill time between classes.

I really don't see what all the fuss is about regarding Ubuntu (and it's derivatives). Maybe it's just 7.10, but it doesn't seem like too many things Just Work. Honestly, it feels like I installed Windows all over again. *shiver*

      EDIT:
For some reason, Suse feels like installing again. Yes, I dislike ubuntu that much, where I'd give up on it after two days.
But, yeah, I dunno why. Only thing I can think of is that I pwned my partitions hardcore (because I know I did), and it took an "outside influence" to clean up the mess (which it did... I couldn't umount my boot partition and do a nice mke2fs -j to it). Whatever. Alls I know is that in about an hour I'll have my baby back.

    • uhhh.....

so, for some reason, Kubuntu 7.10 is the only thing that will install on my lappy.

openSUSE 10.3 died when it stopped wanting to mount ext3 (my boot partition was that file system). a kernel upgrade later, and it kinda died.

I tried to reinstall, but it would hang at "system settings".

I tried Mandriva One 2008. The installer hung and all the virtual terminals were clogged with read errors on /dev/hda (my optical drive).

Tried Xubuntu 7.04 (because it was there). It didn't even go live.

Tried Gentoo 2007.0, if only to fix my partitions. Hung while trying to mount /dev/hda.

So, I have Kubuntu now. Which I am morally opposed to. But it beats windows.

      In other news:

I finally set up the switch in my office. Fast, loud, need to move it elsewhere.
I have a Subaru to replace my Jeep. Hopefully I won't die this winter.
Finally got my Supra running. Fun car. Needs a differential rebuild. Shit.
The monte threw another water pump a couple months back. i think I'll just give it a bigger motor.
I'm pretty sure I'm going to drop ES. Trying to do that and MET was a bad idea.
Speaking of, I think I'm gonna have to do Manufacturing Processes again. Fuck.

      EDIT:
apparently I already talked about the Supra and the Monte. Oh well.
And if anyone cares about my uber-compy plans, I heard of x2go. Built off of NX libraries (but seemingly an improvement of most of the shortcomings), should meet all my needs except video. But, like I mentioned, that thing will probably be a fat-client that doubles as a server. And then I'll have my lappy and nfs shares for video elsewhere.
      /EDIT

      Guess that's it for now.

the boxer's tick like mofo's. not sure why, they just do.

high pitched whine under heavy throttle is usually an exhaust leak.

    • FunkMasta

you could turbo it. costly, and you could only run about 7 psi. BUT you'd get decent power, and not much worse fuel mileage (wrx's generally get 28-30 mpg if driven responsibly. of course, you can thrash the 1.8 and still get that.)

as for the exhaust, borla makes a great header thats a little bit larger and makes some power. its oddly shaped, tuned to bring out more of the boxer rumble (passenger side tubes come to the FRONT of the engine, 2 into 1, then down past the drivers side (which are also 2 into 1) and then to the cat section where they join). equal length headers give more power, but make the car sound like a honda... so most take the 3-5hp hit and get the inequal length. ebay knockoffs are generally as good as the real deal.

this thread has all the usual mods... breakdowns of performance gains etc. made for the 2.5RS, but the same will apply to the 1.8.

      rs25.com
      nasioc.com
      awjunkies.com

a wealth of info. sadly, power wise there's not much to be had from the 1.8. swapping for a bigger engine (the 2.2 has decent power (140hp/140tq)and can be had for cheap) is your only real option there.

as for seats, check the classifieds sections of the websites above. anything impreza 93-2001 is a direct bolt in.

    • FunkMasta

ah the 97 L. i have good new for you.

these cars are like lego. swapping just about anything in is as easy as bolting in the new stuff in the same place. for example, the impreza (and legacy, and forester) Stereo didn't change pinouts from 93-2005. ANY subaru radio, including the in-dash 6 cd changers, are literally plug and play. transmissions, engines, everything.

if you want a spoiler, swap trunks with someone who doesn't. for your front bumper/fogs, i recommend either a JDM bumper, or the USDM 99-01 bumper. the 98 and earlier ones look like mine... not very exciting. and the newer/jdm ones can fit some big fog lights smiley0.gif

there is a large part of me that still wants to do my transmission swap. however, moving in with a bud means i gotta spend money on getting furniture, a new bed... and of course a 1080P TV for my new ps3....

At least auto is easy for the daily commute. smiley6.gif

dude thats sweet! what did you get?

My rims are pretty hard to come by. what you really want are the 98 RS goldies... same as the STi wheels in japan for that year. every other year got different (non sti) wheels.

but the 2000/2001 RS wheels are 16x7, the widest of the RS wheels, and some of the only oem wheels that'll fit over 4 pots.

screw the hood. get yourself a turbo engine, run a front mount intercooler, keep the no scoop hood for the sleeper look smiley8.gif

    • badgerW

Yeah, it's easy to do. But I would recommend some changes:

      exec bittorrentprogramhere &

      1) why use the 'nice' thing when it's your computer
      2) the output from the BT client is constantly updating, so redirecting it to a text file probably isn't a good idea (although I've never done it, so maybe it would work okay...may want to give it a try to see what happens... just keep 'cat'ting the text file to see if it's updated by deleting the previous stuff, or if it just keeps growing bigger like a log file).

Of course, this means that you lose the ability to keep up with the download (as the output effectively goes nowhere). So you have to resort to watching the file size. The problem with the BT client is that it won't quit on its own once it gets the complete file (although maybe there's a command line switch you can throw in there to get it to do that); it'll just keep running, providing another peer source for the file. So you will have to kill it manually once the file is downloaded, unless you figure out a command line switch to get it to turn itself off.

I allways watch the show all the way through, and then decide. You never know what might happen in the next few eps, and if you don't watch them you may never know, especially in shows like Gundam or Naruto where one episode depends on the previous one etc etc.
Right now I'm on ep193, and there have been some very worth while episodes and some very crappy ones, I'm still not very sure, but I think overall it has gotten better, though I'm noticing that some episodes seem to repeat previous ones just with different characters and settings etc. I've got afew more to go and two movies from what I can tell

    • badgerW

Haha, pissing off the community isn't good, but if you hang around some more and answer other people's questions then maybe it'll make up for it.

Package managers.... blah. They all seem to have their flaws. No matter what OS I use, "package blah blah blah required, not found" seems to come up. Every time I end up yelling "so install it yourself, damn computer!" It's amazing how they are happy to let you know exactly what's missing but expect you to fix it yourself. WTF do we have package managers for, anyway? This is why LFS appeals so much to me.

And FreeBSD has that appeal as well, but the FreeBSD package manager is just as frustrating as any I've seen for Linux. On FreeBSD you can either download and install the binaries, or (in a very similar process) download and compile the source. The problem becomes that everything is a moving target with respect to versions. If you're installing a new version of PHP that expects a certain version of Apache, but you don't have that Apache, and then you try to update Apache, but Apache requires SSL-blahblahblah-0.92.061 instead of SSL-blahblahblah-0.92.060 (which is what's already installed) and so on.... arg! And there's a process to tell it to "update everything at once" (build all makeworld) that supposedly works very well (and actually isn't that download intensive since it uses versioning and diffs), but I'm too scared to do it on our production servers and too lazy to install FreeBSD and figure it out on my own machine. I've got an extra PC laptop sitting around with an 80GB drive that I've split into 4 20GB partitions. I've got Windows on one and I was planning on running FreeBSD and two Linux distros on the other ones. Just need to get around to that.....

    • badgerW

That rc.conf example might not have been good, but that kind of stuff (where something just requires a symlink) happens all the time in rc.d.

    • badgerW

A lot of that stuff can be fixed by symlinking. E.g. if it's looking for /usr/lib/xorg-3.5/ (where x is some file extension) and you've got /usr/lib/xorg-3.5.5/ then usually the situation is best fixed by creating a symlink from xorg-3.5 to xorg-3.5.5. It's better than editing the rc.conf.

Things got really bad when the first 64-bit (AMD64) releases were out. We were using Mandrake 10.0 on dual-Opteron servers. I was trying to install a bunch of shit and things just weren't being found where it was expected. The problem was that a lot of the stuff was 32-bit rather than 64-bit. Which is fine, as Opterons can run 32-bit code just as well as 64-bit. But the problem was (hopefully they have this fixed by now) there were two different library directories. Everywhere that there can be a lib directory (/lib, /var/lib, /usr/lib, /usr/local/lib) there were also 64-bit lib directories (/lib64, /var/lib64, etc.). So I had to go through all of these compilation errors and figure out what the hell was where and create symlinks left and right trying to get stuff to compile. In the end I got it to work, although I'm not sure how good it is to compile 64-bit software against 32-bit libraries. Oh well, it worked.

Yeah. I was really bored and had nothing to do, so I said "Why the hell not?" Not the first time I've done it either with a series; I've also done that before with Neon Genesis Evangelion + the movie (First one I did that with and I think I figured out the meaning of life), Excel Saga (Second. Watching it once is fucked up enough as it is; 5 times is the equivalent of 2 hits of LSD), and Outlaw Star (Most recent one I've done that with. Even now, I'm still trying too figure out how the hell the ending worked).

No shit. Those are the type of people I hate the most; the one's who think what their doing is rightous and have nothing to back it up. The worst part of it all is we can't kill him cause that would just fuel his beliefs (Just look what it did for Jesus).

I don't know, I think that Audioslave is actually better than RATM and maybe better than Soundgarden, although I admit my knowledge of Soundgarden doesn't go much past "Black Hole Sun." I think that Chris Cornell has a great, unique voice and strong songwriting skills, and the only part about RATM that I really hated was Zack de la Rocha. So IMO 1+1>2 in this case.
