      Trip pictures! redux

Ok, so I promised more music for Friday and here it is, all from the rest of the records I picked up in Germany.

      Megadeth - Rust in Peace
      8 euro
Once again, filling the gap left because of a cassette. I forgot how much I missed listening to this record and the re-issue is great. Now, if only Dave would announce the G-tour 2 dates...
      Take No Prisoners

Jazz June - They Love Those who make the Music
      3.50 euro
Someone stole this off of me years ago so when I saw it for the 3.50 I figured, why not? This is one of those bands that continued that trend set in motion by the Get Up Kids, Christie Front Drive, Promise Ring, Cap'n Jazz and others that wound up getting us into this "emo" mess we're in now. The reason I had this? My old band did some shows with these guys and we dug their playing... well, some of it. Anyway, check it out.
      Rich Kid Shakedown

      Braid - Age of Octeen
      14 euro
I've had this on vinyl for yeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrs and couldn't find it at home on cd. Had to grab it. This is emo-mathy kind of pop goodness that could have been where we went with the "emo" trend and it would've been good, oh well. It's so hard to compare Braid to any one band or set of bands, the closest I can ever get is Jawbox/Burning Airlines. Kind of appropriate since Robert Nanna is to Illinois what J Robbins is to DC, imo. Do yourself a favor and click the link...
      Jimmy Go Swimmer

Piebald - The Rock Revolution will not be Televised
      3.50 euro
Apparently, zee Germans have either all gotten over their Piebald phase or the band's record label dumped a bunch of copies of this on them. Either way, the little money spent on this clever EP is well worth it, especially since I didn't have any of these songs and I honestly really dig this band. They're hard to pin down but I know it's generally fun with great lyrics and good enough musicianship to keep you engaged from that perspective.
      David Lee Rock

Excel - The Joke's On You
      6 euro
OMG grab your skateboards kiddies, it's time to go back to 1988! This is the kind of crossover thrash that was pretty big back then and this band's stuff has been difficult to find since then, really, especially since the version I copped was the original release on Caroline, not the reissue that came out on Rotten. And, apparently, I got a steal... so rock those hi-top sneakers and check this out.
      Seeing Insane

Hammerfall - Chapter V: Unbent, Unbowed, Unbroken
      8.50 euro
This, and the Sportfreunde in the other journal, were the first records I decided to pick up over there. Mainly, this was due to the price. Anyway, typical Hammerfall here. Glorious power metal of the variety you have to listen to when in Europe these days. Still, kicking myself, though, that I didn't buy that Ensiferum record I saw when I had the chance, oh well. Throw on the chain mail and commence with the conquering of mythical lands.
      Fury of the Wild

and a Ramones bonus for the weekend, their version of the Tom Waits classic, I Don't Wanna Grow Up.

And, that's it for the music haul from Germany, next time out maybe I'll talk about some of the other pick ups and what not.

Everyone, have a great weekend! smiley0.gif

    • part of the German haul...

      whosmisled

      the musical version, pt. 1:

I figured it was long overdue, that I should post on some of the pick ups, finds, and discoveries that I managed whilst in Germany. So, we'll start with the music shopping. A lot of CDs were very well priced and I was able to fill in some surprising gaps in my collection at stores like Saturn (their version of Best Buy), Media Markt (their version of Circuit City), and a couple of local record stores in Cologne, especially notable was Underdog Records, I can't more highly recommend that place. Great store, awesome owner/managers, and they put on shows around town. Very cool to see that kind of thing over there.

so let's get on with it:
      #1 The Ramones - Anthology
For some reason I only have cassettes and vinyl for the Ramones, so I saw this for about 7 euro and had to grab it.
My Brain is Hanging Upside Down (Bonzo Goes to Bitburg)

#2 Dream Theater - Images and Words
8 euro, replaces an old cassette copy. Double win!
      Pull Me Under

      #3 NOFX - Ribbed
9 euro, replaced a ganked copy of this classic NOFX album. After hearing it again after all these years I might just call it their best.
      Cheese/Where's My Slice?

      #4 Christie Front Drive - self-titled
13 euro, this cd is one I always meant to pick up but has been difficult to find in the States, or at least where I live. Imagine my surprise when I found it in Germany! For those out there that like Jimmy Eat World, this is one of the bands that sort of started that whole thing and never got the chance to enjoy the popularity of the genre.
      Dyed on 8

      #5 Farside - Rigged
13 euro, easily one of my favorite albums. One of those records that you have in your collection that you remember for helping you get through tough times. This copy replaces a worn out cassette. Another surprising find in Deutschland.
      Gesture

#6 At the Close of Every Day - the Silja Symphony
14 euro, easily the must have of my journey. This is a Dutch band whose albums usually are only available via import meaning $$$, soooo happy with this record. Give the track a listen, plzkthx!
      4 Seasons

      #7 Sportfreunde Stiller - Burli
7 euro, used copy of this German band's 2004 record. I had heard a little of this band before I went over and knew I liked their infectious, punk-infused pop.
      Ich Roque

#8 Christina Sturmer - Schwarz Weiss
13 euro, easily the biggest guilty pleasure record of the bunch. Essentially, Austrian female fronted pop with a little rock.
      Glucklich

so that's it for part 1, hopefully part 2 shows up before the end of the week.

      pics from the trip

    • Back in the USSSSSSSA

      whosmisled

So that's it then, back from Germany, I'm sure you all missed me... or not. Anyway, for 3 weeks I explored Germany and bits of Belgium. Quite fun, really, except for those US games against Ghana and the Czech Republic... and that's really all I have to say about that.

The US match against Italy, however, was epic. Glad I was there for that one. All in all, the World Cup was worthwhile, but the sidetrips and travel around the countryside was where it was really at. Slowly but surely I'll get around to posting some pictures, but I won't do a pic journal like some people, at least not for the time being, and yes Kyle, I'm looking at you. XD

Some, okay all, of you who asked for postcards should have gotten them by now, if not, blame Deutsche Post.

The following cities were visited and/or plundered:
      Trier
      Aachen
      Cologne/Koln/Koeln
      Koblenz
      Kaiserslautern
      Nuremberg
      Gelsenkirchen
      Essen
      Liege (in Belgium)

I decided to go with semi-close destinations because of a generally tight schedule and being based out of Cologne on a daily basis.

BTW just as a general note, there are a fuck tonne of cathedrals in Germany and Europe in general. I took a whole bunch of pictures of a whole bunch of cathedrals and some of a fortress. Castles were plentiful but alas no one was very helpful in getting to them for some reason or another or they were in out of the way towns that were difficult if not nigh on impossible to reach by train.

German beer = spoiled my appetite for locally available brews. The beer was so good and so affordable that sticker shock and loss of appetite for what's available locally has massively reduced my desire to drink here. Que sera sera...

Oh, and you people on my watchlist... you're all some cheeky monkeys, I swear. PxR takes the cake with 34 new journals and 24 new images. I'm going to try to plow through it all in the next few days but if my mousing hand slips and accidentally clicks clear alerts I cannot be held responsible.

Glad to be back in the States, and if any of you have any particular questions about the trip feel free to fire away.

      3. I'm going to Germany.... *sinking in* GERMANY... holy shizz.

This is the last day to get me addys if you want postcards, too.

For those who like sports you'll dig this. Everyone else, it gives you a good idea why 3.5 million people around the world are converging on Germany over the next few days.

Here's what I need from you guys, those of you who would like a postcard from Germany PM your addy to me BY NEXT WEDNESDAY, JUNE 7TH! I cannot guarantee I will be back on RvB at any point during my trip... *oh the watchlist rapeage*

At any rate, I will have 8 hours of plane travel and untold hours on trains for postcard writing, so get me those addys. smiley0.gif

BTW when we inevitably hit the next music/metuhl bar while I'm gone, someone kindly link me to the new one, kthxbye!

      Some quick announcements:

Don't know if it won, but you can still check out Ronin's vid on E!'s site. Find out tonight at 10pm ET... unless he's already found out.

Also, go vote for Microbe's (microbefox) vid in Google Idol!

      Now, to answer your questions:

pjb897 asks: What is the Dewey Decimal number for the book Get In The Van: On The Road With Black Flag?

Nice, proper librarian type question to start off with. Well, the answer happens to be - 782.42166/092/2, the slashes indicate further subdivisions as necessary. Now, the Library of Congress call number, most would see in their local library, would be ML421.B56 R65 1994

      not1337 asks:

ummmmm... a buncha questions... let's see...

      1) HOW DO I SHOT WEB?

This should take away some of the mystery.

      2) asl? ololo

      5/m/taiwan

      3) Why don't you have a picture of yourself in your images?

You mean like this one or this one?

      4) Why must places only hire 18 or older, but fast food places will hire any-fucking-body?

in theory this should not be the case...

      5) Why can't i be 18? I feel like i'm 18.

blame the Gregorians for setting calendar standards years ago

      6) What is the average air speed velocity of an unladen swallow?

      well that all depends...

      8) African or Euorpean swallow?

kind of a non-starter since the African swallow's not migratory

      9) At what frequency does the low C# of an Extended Range Bass (think Jean Baudin) ring at?

this has to be close to the brown sound, and since I don't want people randomly crapping their pants I will not divulge the frequency

      10) What happened to 7?

      7 ate nine

      11) When will then be now?

      yesterday

      12) Can i have some money?

      ask your mom...

      bignicejohn asks:

Did you or did you not decide a 'questions' journal after the smashing success that was mine?

      always

Will you buy me a beer at RvBTO2?

      indeed

      Do you like fuzzy things?

      not generally
      >.>
      <.<

      gymeg04 asks:

What two things can you not have for breakfast?

      lunch and dinner

      RaoulDuke asks:

Do people who listen to Epic/Power/Symphonic metal do so for the kitsch value, or do they actually deem it serious, intelligent music? I understand that from a theoretical perspective, bands like Hammerfall are very talented, but...y'know...

pretty much spot on, it's kind of the ear candy of metals.

Oh, also...I recently discovered Doom Metal to be a genre that interests me big time...any recs?

I always recommend Cathedral and Candlemass, IMO, (and Cloud - among others - will correct me if I'm wrong) those bands are critical to the genre

      Tessa asks:

      what's it like being you?

Generally? It's good, fairly mundane.... well, I travel a fair bit but the normal day is just the 9-5 job. Luckily, though, there are some good people in my life that help make every day a good one to some extent.

And that wraps up the first edition of smiley9.gifAsk a Metalhead Librarian smiley9.gif ! Thanks to everyone who participated. Now, go vote for Microbe and watch Ronin's vid!

Sadly if we're talking something digital, I can't help you with what it's printed on. I'm only able (at this point) to draw up the images and send them electronically. Unless someone WANTS a traditional piece... Which would cost more and have to be sent via snail mail. Does that answer your question somewhat?... Because something on nice paper done traditionally normally runs around $30 (shipping included). And due to material costs I can't really deviate from that.

I'm not all that sure what the itinerary of events is, I know the 30th is the dress rehearsal I believe, 31st is the wedding, so it's whatever is going down on the 29th. Only thing I know for sure is being fitted for the tux, otherwise it's all a mystery to me. Couldn't afford to have a car the entire time, grrr to three months of unemployment and counting.

Yeah, I wasn't expecting a whole lot out of things with Sam, it was more out of boredom and curiosity than anything else. I'm a sucker for the wounded bird thing, but not that much of a sucker any more.

New girl is stuck in town this weekend (can't fly, sinus infection), so we'll see what goes with that. We've both got the same cold, so most likely we'll spend the long weekend feeding each other chicken soup and cold meds.

New job has stayed awesome for two weeks, hopefully this trend will continue once my new boss starts next week.

I'm the guy who can't hold a grudge to save his life, and I'm now convinced that the people telling me she was cheating were either lying to get me over her faster or just didn't know what they were talking about. Not that she'd have to cheat on me for it to be a bad idea to get back with her, but it made me feel better about the whole thing, that I hadn't misread her *that* badly. She's the past, and the future's looking cute, petite and blond.
