Relic Entertainment is known for their groundbreaking Homeworld and popular Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War. Well, they did it again, with Company of Heroes.
This game, simply put, is astounding. The gameplay is fast-paced due to the fact that you have to take control points to gain supplies and defensive buildings are limited.
Company of Heroes is also one of the first RTS's I've played that makes me feel like I'm ordering intelligent men around, not mindless toy soldiers. They react to everything; terrain, enemy fire, friendly movement, etc. They take cover on their own and do it smartly.
The AI of the enemy is smart as well, not just of the units but of the commander as well. The AI will flank you, cut off your supplies, and do all sorts of nasty and unexpected things. No longer does he walk all his units in a line to your base.
Another outstanding feature of CoH is the completely destructible environment. Everything, from churches to hedgerows can be destroyed. This is important, because you rely on your infantry, which in turn rely on cover. Plus, it looks frickin' awesome.
How about the graphics? Well, the image at the top is in-game... so that should give you a good idea of what it looks like. Simply put, it rivals most FPS's of today. You'll want to zoom in a lot in this one.
Multiplayer is superb as well. Due to the control point set-up, you can never sit still and build up your base. You have to keep on sending out troops to capture points to gain supplies, and then you have to hold them, which is difficult as defensive structures aren't as powerful in this game as they are in many other RTS's. You'll spend 90% of the time working on the actual battlefield and not back at your base. The games usually last about an hour, but they're never dull because you're always doing something.
If you're a fan of RTS's, this is a must have. Even if you aren't a strategy fan, you should check it out.
