So, today (technically yesterday) was the first day of magic camp this summer. I'm an instructor this year, which means that I'm the one in charge on the premises. It's a little scary, but I work with great people and the pay makes it more than worth the trouble.

Now, I'm certainly no racist (although everyone's a little bit racist sometimes), but it is very difficult when you have kids who speak little to no English with parents who have about the same ability. We have two Japanese kids who can understand you, more or less, when you sit down and explain things carefully to them. But it's troublesome to do that when you have 13 other kids to worry about. I'm not saying that everyone should instantly speak English as soon as they arrive in this country, I'm just saying it makes my life more difficult. smiley6.gif It took a few minutes to make everything clear to the mom, especially since the kids' names weren't on our roster for some reason. She also didn't understand what a tetanus shot is, so I had to use some pantomiming to communicate, but we eventually got it. Oh, and by the way? When the medical form says that you need the date of your kid's latest tetanus shot, LEAVING IT BLANK OR WRITING "UNKNOWN" DOES NOT HELP. Ugh.

Anyways. We've got a good group this week. They're generally quiet and attentive, and even when they get excited, they're not out of control. Looks like we're gonna have a pretty good first camp of the summer, especially since the company in general is a lot more organized this year. We've got schedules and learning methods and everything. It makes my life easier.

And now for something completely different: Rocky Horror! The Sonic Transducers' last show was a hit! I received compliments on my performance as the Criminologist, everyone else did a great job, as well, and the theater was packed both nights. For our next show, I'm playing Rocky on Friday night and the Crim on Saturday. I'm excited, and I am loving Sonic Transducers. Hopefully we'll continue to grow in size and perform even better. smiley0.gif

All in all, life is good. I hope all you lovely people are doing just as well.

Have you ever felt like someone seems so very, unusually right for you, even though you're almost certain you'll never be with them?

I had my last final today. It was pretty easy. I didn't even study much for it, I spent most of the day packing. After the exam, I got some food, sold my textbooks, and drove home. As I was packing up my stuff to take home, I realized that I have a crapload of stuff. I got it all in one car load, but it was kind of a pain. It was kind of weird seeing everyone moving out and seeing the dorm so empty. The drive home was nice. I left right at sunset, and it was a good one. By the way, I really like sunsets. A lot. Just thought you should know that.

This summer should be pretty much amazing. I'm gonna get a membership at the gym so I can start building some strength and endurance. I'm planning on trying out for DCI this fall. I'm thinking I'm gonna go out for Jersey Surf and The Cadets (I refuse to refer to them as Holy Name Cadets) and see what happens. I'm not a great musician, so I'm not expecting The Cadets to be too impressed with me.

Anyways, I've also got magic camp coming up in late June, which if course I am quite excited for. We've been having meetings to get ready for the summer, and it's reminded me of just how much I love working with those people. I'm gonna miss it next summer when I'm marching DCI.

Before magic camp starts, though, I've got a two-week job with an environmental firm that's doing a study on waste composition. I'll be sorting recyclables, which doesn't sound too exciting, but it pays $12/hour, and it's a great resume builder.

Also this summer: Rocky Horror! I joined a cast in DC that some of my friends started. We're doing a show every month, and our June show comes in the middle of the Capital Pride festival. So we'll be doing publicity at the parade, and we're gonna have a big gay themed show. It should be fabulous!

Hooray, life. How are you kids doing? You are still there, right?

Me (10:32 PM): Haha, it's a bit late you know. Get me rocky horror on dvd, if you can find it
Christine (10:34 PM): Better late than never! I think I saw that at Target.

Riveting, I know. smiley1.gif That paper I was talking about was my last real assignment of the semester. My first final is next Thursday. Soon I'll be back home and making bank at my summer magic camp job. Exciting. smiley1.gif

But first is this weekend, which will involve the new Star Trek movie, Reduced Shakespeare, possibly a potluck, a Gamer Symphony Orchestra concert, a Rocky Horror Picture Show shadowcasting, Christine and possibly Andi coming down to visit, and the bottles of Smirnoff and Khalua sitting in my fridge. It's gonna be a good weekend. smiley0.gif

      College is amazing.

      This is real.

This really happened. (sadly, we did not break the record.)

This is where I'm living next year.

      This is my major.

I played ultimate frisbee with my floor earlier today, and it was super fun.

This is happening tonight, and if you haven't heard of shadowcasting, you need to 1) become more familiar with Rocky Horror Picture Show and its cult following and 2) get out and see a good shadowcasting. Like, say, the one we do twice a semester here at Maryland. Goodness, so much fun.

Life is a crazy wench, and if you go a little crazy yourself, you might just enjoy her. smiley1.gif

So, yes. I made the crazy, crazy trek to be on the mall today. Hours of standing in the FECKING COLD, wading through the biggest crowds I have ever seen in DC, wandering around downtown trying to make sense of all the crazy, crazy security setups and closings, just to stand on my numb feet just to see a half hour ceremony on a jumbotron. Worth it?

      Fuck yes.

      Picture time.

      n1227600546_30337006_9190.jpg
This is the security checkpoint we were waiting at for 2.5 hours before they opened the gate.

      n1227600546_30337011_485.jpg
And this is what it looked like behind us. Leaving at 4 AM was definitely worth it.

We dubbed him tree boy. He was up there for at least 2 hours.

      n1227600546_30337014_1233.jpg
And we finally got through! Success!

So, I didn't get drum major. No surprise there, considering how my audition went. However, this opens another door for me. Since I won't have the ridiculous time commitment of drum major, I can pursue the position of conductor for the Gamer Symphony Orchestra. They need new conductors, since their only one is graduating this year. It seems like a really fun thing to do, and I have many friends in the orchestra.

So, this is a totally lame journal, but I need to go to sleep because I have a parade tomorrow. Maybe I'll post something substantial later. Convince me.

And her name is Fable 2. That game is fucking amazing, and I think I'm becoming quickly addicted. Which sucks, because I have a paper due tomorrow that I haven't really started. smiley4.gif Blargh.

On a related note, Microsoft recently added support for Netflix's streaming service on the 360, which is very nice to have, instead of watching everything on my laptop. I've been watching Weeds a lot. It's really good. The characters are pretty outrageous, and the plot is a little crazy, but not overwhelming. Very entertaining; I highly recommend it.

So, I'm trying out for drum major (that's the one who conducts the band smiley6.gif ). Auditions are on Wednesday. My high school band director also went to Maryland, and was drum major himself for two years, so he's been helping me out. He gave me a recording of one of the pieces he conducted for his auditions. It's a fun arrangement of Jupiter - plenty of time changes and all that, of course.

Thanksgiving break has been nice. It's been great to just be able to relax and not have to do anything for a couple of days. Classes start again tomorrow, as you might have guessed from the paper that I have due. Anyways, I'm off to go get some food with my old friends. May you be touched by His Noodly Appendage.

The Clerks X special edition is hard to find around these parts. I have Dr. Strangelove, but it's being borrowed. When was there a War of the Worlds movie that wasn't stupid Dakota Fanning and Tom Cruise? My girlfriend (the aforementioned borrower) owns Rent and RHPS, and we're trying not to double up. Thanks for reminding me about Dr. Horrible; I need to buy RvB: Reconstruction while we're at it. Do you mean original Hairspray with Ricki Lake, or the new one? Also, even if I didn't like to OWN movies, Blockbuster > Netflix.
