      Delicious.

      Test was...ok.

I'm going crazy for...*cough* various reasons.

And I'm pretty sure my room is now my floor's Rock Band room. We were up until like, 1 last night playing. Fun stuff.

Anyways, I should get working on my Philosophy paper. The topic: Is it reasonable to believe something (like the existence of God) without sufficient evidence?

So, I'm in the Shakespeare Players, and we're putting on Othello.

      I'm Cassio.

We had a readthrough today. First time I had ever actually read Othello.

      Fun times.

Also, Rocky Horror tonight! Pictures will be posted.

      What? You expected something substantive?

Why can I never get enough sleep?

I set my alarm for 9:45 this morning, woke up and didn't want to get up, so I figured, "eh, how about a few more minutes?"

Of course, then I wake up at 11.

I think I need to do less activities. I seem to have no time for studying. I also need to figure out what the hell I want to major in. I think I want to do education, but I still don't know what subject. Blargh.

      Also, ZOMGZ RECONSTRUCTION 16.

On a positive note, my floor had a talent show last night, and I totally blew them away with my magic. smiley0.gif

So, I'm sitting in PSYC100 right now, and I hopped on RvB before the professor started lecturing, and of course, haven't left yet...anyways, I checked Morgue's journal, and figured, "Oh, I'll do it later when I'm not in class..." and then realized that my professor is just blabbering on. I'm barely taking notes. Anyways, trend time!

      1. What is your favourite word?

Phantasmagoria, which basically means a series of highly stimulating images.

      2. What is your least favourite word?

Probably gay or fag/faggot. I don't hate the words, just the popular usage.

      3. What turns you on?

Friendliness, a lack of inhibition, vegetarianism

      4. What turns you off?

      Desire for control, smoking, intolerance

      5. What sound or noise do you love?

I love lots of noises! An entire DCI corps belting out a big major chord, resolving a diminished 7 chord to a major 1, two major chords stacked on top of each other, adding a 9th on top of a dominant seventh chord, a major chord with a tritone....oh, I am such a dork.

      6. What sound or noise do you hate?

The practice horns we use for field rehearsal...sweet noodle, those are some beaten, out-of-tune tubas. Oh, and that super high frequency that you're only supposed to hear if you're under 20. *shudder*

      7. What is your favourite curse word?

Hmmm...I like cunt. It's got a nice, percussive hit to it.

      8. What profession other than yours would you like to attempt?

Well, I don't exactly have a profession yet, but I love public speaking. I think it would be great to make a living out of that.

      9. What profession would you not want to attempt?

Well, I wouldn't want to be a custodian. Can't think of anything else, though.

      10. If Heaven exists, what would you like to hear God say upon your arrival at the Pearly Gates?

"Oh, hell? Nah, that's just for child molesters and people who talk at the theater."

      1. Take a picture of yourself right now.
      2. Don't change your clothes, don't fix your hair, just take a picture of you in the moment... that means now or at least immediately following the closing of this journal entry.
      3. Post that picture with absolutely NO editing.
      4. Post these exact instructions with your picture should you choose to take part in this particular photo journal "trend"... seriously, get to it; no excuses. Let's have fun with this.

      So, uhm, substance?

Well, life is good. The weather's finally cooling off, which is very good news for football games. Our marching band uniforms are like, 1/4 inch thick wool. Not fun in summer heat. And I've been joining all kinds of clubs. Gamer Symphony Orchestra is lots of fun, it's great having juggling club to actually juggle on a regular basis, Shakespeare Players are having auditions for Othello this week (wish me luck?), and I went to swing dancing last night! I was kind of surprised - it was lots of fun. smiley1.gif And of course, marching band is amazing as always. We started working on our Maynard Ferguson tribute show today. It kinda makes me wish I were still on trumpet. Now, I have one question: Why is every cutie I meet either taken or not interested? smiley4.gif

Ok, seriously, is there anyone still reading my journal here who isn't friends with me on Facebook? Because otherwise, there's really not much point to my posting stuff here.

      Anyways.

      College:

smiley9.gif Marching band is amazing. It's really awesome being a part of a 250-person band.

smiley9.gif I love my tubas. They're awesome people.

smiley9.gif We have a juggling club! And apparently I'm the first devilsticker they've seen in awhile. Fun stuff.

smiley9.gif I'm loving the gym here. It's a huge facility, and of course is free to students. I'm gonna try to go every day.

smiley9.gif I enjoy lectures. A lot. All that information pouring forth - and all I have to do is sit there, absorb it, and take notes. It's awesome, imo.

smiley9.gif I hate homework. What else is new?

smiley9.gif My roommate is a really cool guy, and has excellent taste in music. This morning, he got up and put on Knights of Cydonia. Rock.

smiley9.gif In short, I love this place. I wish you were all here so you could experience the wonderfulness of the University of Maryland.

      I'm going to college.

      Like, today.

Well, today band camp starts. Classes don't start until September 2. But I move in today.

Can I even express how excited I am?

    • Ready. Willing. Ecstatic.

      ygrof

The past three days have been almost euphoric...and this is only the beginning.

On Thursday and Friday, I had my Freshmen Orientation. If ever there was any doubt in my mind that University of Maryland was at all short of the perfect, hugs your skin like a mother hugs her baby fit, that doubt has been blown out of the water. I had already been to the campus several times, and I already knew plenty about the university. I have friends who go there, and my band director, who has also been a mentor to me, went there. I had always known that it's a good school. I was excited when I got my acceptance letter. I had always known that they have an awesome marching band, as well. More recently, I have learned more about all the culture, activities, clubs, etc. on campus. But I had never felt the feeling that grew in me on Thursday and was firmly entrenched in my mind on Friday.

In fact, the feeling sparked as soon as I was on campus Thursday morning. I walked up to the student union building, where there was already a crowd gathering, and I began thinking, "Wow...this is my school." It's hard to convey my excitement as this thought finally began to cement itself in my mind.

The actual orientation program just made my excitement grow more and more. My group's orientation adviser, the UMD student who showed us around campus, answered our questions, etc., was pretty cool, and she's on dance team. They rehearse and perform with the marching band. Woot. We got to see the main parts of campus, we got plenty of in-depth, personalized advising on our schedules and picking our classes, we ate good food (hooray!), and we mingled, meeting people from as far as New York. It was so easy to meet people. You could walk up, say hello, and strike up a conversation about where you're from, what you're interested in, etc. As I saw more presentations, met more faculty, current students, and fellow freshmen, I was amazed at just how great everyone was. All these friendly, cool people. Right here at my school.

Friday afternoon, I didn't want to leave. I wanted to move in right then and there. I was so excited about all the wonderful things at this wonderful university that I didn't want to go home. But I did want to express my excitement to my parents, and there is still much to do before I actually move in.

Speaking of which, today, I was doing some dorm shopping at Bed, Bath & Beyond, and when we got to the register, the cute chick behind the counter saw my UMD shirt and lit up. She's a senior, and expressed her jealousy that I'm just starting out and still have four years ahead of me. She also gave me her name, told me to Facebook her, and offered to show me around the campus, hang out, or whatever sometime.

If by now you think that you might have an understanding of my excitement, multiply it by three or four.

These are gonna be the best four years of my life.

So, I've got a couple of things to update/share with you. Which makes sense, considering I haven't properly journaled in weeks.

I've been working as a counselor/teacher/whathaveyou at kid's summer camps, all run by the same guy, who is really, really cool, but more on that later. My first week, three weeks ago, was a magic camp with a group of 17 7-11-year-olds. It was my first real experience with kids, and I was pleasantly surprised. I really enjoyed it, and it just made me feel good. The job also pays really well, so it's been worlds better than being a lowly cashier at Panera. So, that camp went really well.

The next week went by rather uneventfully, then last Monday, I got a call from Chris, the guy who runs the camps, offering me another week of employment, again at a magic camp, but this time with a group of 9 5-7-year-olds. Having enjoyed the first week so much, I jumped at it. This camp was, of course, a little more chaotic, since the kids were younger, but it was still fun, and there was another camp in the same building with one rather cute counselor. Me being me, I did of course shamelessly flirt with her a bit. Then I got a call from Chris. He said that he had heard about my slight escapades, and then, with me expecting a reprimand, he told me, "...and I just wanted to say that that is what we are all about!" I cracked up. This is an example of his awesomeness. He also had offered to pay my gas money, since this camp was a good drive for me.

Now, this week. Or rather, today. Same age group, 5-7. But this is a carnival camp. There's me and two other instructors for...are you ready for this? Twenty-nine kids. Holy chaos, Batman. Though I must admit, the nice thing about this is that it takes forever just to get them all together and settled down to move to the next activity, and taking up time is nice when you have 6 hours to fill. But still, it was crazy keeping them under control. We had a couple of problem children who were very physical. One of them attacked two other kids bad enough that we had to call their parents to let them know. No serious injuries, though. Now, there was one kid who was more of a concern than the rest. He came to camp without a lunch, and this is a camp that goes from 9 to 3. After the camp was over, he was the only one left of all the kids, and we were waiting for his parents for about 30 minutes when Melinda, the one with the most experience and therefore the head instructor of sorts, tried to find a phone number, but his parents hadn't filled out all the forms. smiley7.gif She found a house number, but nobody picked up. Eventually, Adam, the guy who seems to be in charge of the county recreation department (I'm not sure what his job exactly is) was able to get in touch with the kid's mom by email. A babysitter came, along with his sister, to pick him up, and a very peeved Adam had forms for her to get filled out. We finally left around 5. And yes, this is a 5-year-old child. *sigh*

Anyways, onto my other exciting recent adventure. This past weekend, I went sailing with my dad and a married couple for a race up to Baltimore on Saturday and back yesterday. Party in Baltimore Saturday evening, of course. On Saturday, we were doing just fine until we put the spinnaker up. Through various misadventures, the sail got twisted, tangled, and torn, so we were forced to just take it down and sail with an old genoa. Oh, and in the process of these misadventures, I got a nasty bit of rope burn that took some skin off my pointer finger. It's not very painful, just freaking annoying, because now I can barely use that finger. Anyways, the real action happened the next day. For awhile, we were doing great. The wind had been a bit squirrelly at first, but we did get to the point where it had picked one direction to blow in, and it was at that point that we were bopping along, making great speed...and then the shit hit the fan.

We noticed that the mast was actually bending, and more than it should, and then, the mast, well, collapsed. Yes, the entire mast. It just fell over. I mean, it's not so astonishing when you consider the fact that my dad's boat has a rotating mast, so it essentially sits on top of a steel ball that looks just like a trailer hitch. It's not actually connected to the boat. But it is still pretty amazing. It crumpled near the bottom and just bent right over. What made it worse was that the mast had gone straight through the lifeline (which is just what we call the little fence that runs around the boat to help keep people from falling in), and the posts went right through the mainsail. And those weren't the only tears. That poor sail was like swiss cheese. Anyways, after we finally pulled the sails out of the water, we started pulling the mast up, and it was crazy heavy. My dad couldn't figure out why it was so damn heavy. He and one other guy were able to carry it onto the boat. Eventually, we got the top of the mast to the surface, and lo and behold, there was a crab pot tangled at the top. Now, you may be thinking, "Crabs? How heavy can they be?" But the problem is that those crab pots out in the bay are secured to anchor lines, and you can't exactly just pull those out of the water. So, my dad had to jump in and cut the line, and then we were able to get the mast out of the water. There was a bit more struggling with various lines and a couple more crab pots, but we eventually got away all right. Except, then we encountered the problem of the weather. The wind and current were against us, so we were only doing about 3 knots with the motor running (that's about 3.5mph/5.6kph). But my dad had a friend who let us use his dock instead of having to crawl all the way back to the dock he keeps it at, and it's a good thing, too, because we got in just as a big storm was coming in.

I don't think I've mentioned what our marching show will be this fall.

      chase.gif
The legendary lead trumpeter Bill Chase assembled some of the finest musicians to form the jazz-rock group CHASE. Sadly, Bill Chase along with other band members perished in an airplane crash in 1974. However his music lives on with these creatively arranged charts by MADISON SCOUTS arranger Scott Boerma. These charts utilize woodwinds and brass in a way that allows many bands to enjoy and experience this exciting music. Ranges are very reasonable and do not require a powerful lead trumpeter.

      OPEN UP WIDE Opener
This jazz-rock opener features trumpet soloists. The "horn licks" lay well on the horn and will flatter your band.

      HANDBAGS AND GLADRAGS Production
Scott has done a beautiful job of utilizing woodwinds to open and close this work.

GET IT ON Closer (Features Percussion)
The unexpected woodwind climax will take your audience by surprise along with exciting "call and response" between the high and low voices. Percussion solo is strategically located in the middle of the chart.
