Don't make me go back to Georgia. I. Don't. WANNA.

Sigh. Getting up at the asscrack of dawn tomorrow to start the long-as-fuck drive from Dallas back to Savannah. I guess I have to stop in Alabama, because fuck the TRiPS report, I'm getting as far as I can before I stop for the night, which will hopefully be Rucker or somewhere along those lines. Then it's sign in from leave by midnight on the 2nd and shoulder back to the plow on the 3rd.

Aw, shit. I can't stop and stay on base at Rucker. I've got a .22 rifle, a 410 shotgun, and a 1911 .45 sitting in my trunk accompanying me back to the house on Wilmington Island. THAT would be awkward.

"Uh, sir, what's up with all this firepower in your trunk?"

"Oh, those? How'd they get in there?"

"Er, we're gonna have to ask you to pull around over here and one sec...hey, yeah, we're gonna need a couple more units here Sarn't...ok sir, step out of the car, please?"

      Nope, that wouldn't go well.

      Dammit.

So are there any intelligent women left here in Georgia who are my age but are not divorcees and have no children? Oh, these southern Baptist-raised women are starting to grate on me. Take that and this town's proximity to two military bases (one of which is actually IN the town), and you have a shallow dating pool for a dude who just wants a chick who can carry on an intelligent conversation for over ten minutes and has no kids, and isn't jaded by men.

Talking to any other girls is like talking to a brick wall which can talk back, but has nothing coherent or interesting to say beyond, "OMIGOD, IM SO DRUNK HAHA"

A friend of mine, a LTC in the Marine Corps, is in DC right now for the 66th anniversary for the battle of Iwo Jima.

What a privelege to spend time with these veterans, some of the last remaining (two of them from Dallas, my home). These are men by which other men are measured, and my respect for them cannot be described in words which would do it any justice. To have been in such horrific fighting for the good of his country (and for the free world) and seen such terrible things and to have come through it, expecting little or nothing in return, says much of a man and his contribution to society and the world as a whole. I am jealous, though I know if I was there right now I would be unable to speak due to the awe in which I hold these Marines. Though I am not a Marine, the phrase Semper Fi is a fitting one, especially when speaking of the war in the Pacific and the hard battles fought there. Marines who fought in the Pacific, you were indeed Always Faithful, and may a grateful nation never forget it.

To all veterans of WWII, no matter where you fought, no matter what your role, thank you. Without men such as you, the world would not be what it is today. That's a fact. America, and indeed the entire free world, owes you a debt that cannot be measured. You are my heroes, and the reason that I volunteered to serve my country.

So shortly after arriving in Savannah, I'd say within an hour, I'd already spotted an indoor shooting range and gun dealer about five minutes from post.

So the new 1911 shoots like a champ. I did have some feed problems with the mag that came with the weapon (ACT-MAG...anyone know about this brand?) so on a friend's recommendation I bought a Wilson Combat magazine with a plastic follower that holds seven rounds. I was initially happy that the ACT-MAG magazine held eight rounds, but it is such a piece of shit that I cannot continue to use it. It gave me feed problems numerous times in one hour at the range, despite having been fully loaded for almost two days to make the spring less stiff. I am also wondering about the ammo I was shooting initially. It was PMC brand, 230gr FMJ .45 ACP. I recently bought a box of Winchester 230gr and hope that this combination of ammunition and new awesome magazine will eliminate the problems.

Does anyone know anything about PMC ammunition? Is it just a shit brand? I have never read a negative review of Winchester ammo, so I have high hopes. Will it harm the weapon to switch between ammunition brands a few times? Or is it more beneficial to just stick with one decent brand like Winchester?

Well I was there since it's me in the picture holding the rifle, and I can tell you there is no mag in the weapon. We were on a FOB and were not on alert so we were not even on amber status like I said. The sling is three-point, which is why it is hanging down so low and the magazine well indeed does sit that low. The picture might be distorting it or whatever, but I am 110% positive there is not even a twenty-round mag in there since we don't use those either. Also I am sitting the middle seat of an LMTV and the seat is holding the sling up.

tomii tomii tomii. You're getting blind and senile in your old age!

Yeah, well, at least I'm not trying to go blind using a scope... what, with nearly a foot of eye relief and a partially blocked front optic... How'd that work for you, anyway?

What? That's the magazine well, not the magazine. We weren't even on amber status.

      The picture...

Magazine well ain't that deep on one of those things. However, it looks as though the hand guard is supported above the seat. Sling is hanging down onto seat. I realize that I can't see a support hand back on the action or the stock, but it looks a helluva lot to me like there's at least a 20rd mag in there supporting the front end of the rifle.

But yeah, long story short, made it to the end at Red Stone, they made a new SEP which said if you fuck up you go to an academic review board and I just asked for a reclass because they pretty much eat you alive and kick you out. They toned down the standards for a couple months, everyone failed at eglin (really high percentage) and then they turned it back up to knock out a lot of people since they didn't like spending money on too many people dropping out at Eglin.

What kind of surgery did you get? I've had a pin in my collarbone, broke both hands, and all the other wear and tear the builds up and they let me fly. I'd dip out of work, or go on your day off and talk to the Flight Doc and lay it all out for him, he'll know the standards. They should be able to work with you unless it's something really crazy.

The M9 isn't a given, I went from and M4 back to an M16. Hmm...M4 and hate life or M16, flight pay and a job that doesn't blow zombie goat sack. Yeah, I think I won that one. I stop by the Apache hangar once in awhile to trade stuff and visit freinds, douches try to give me shit about having an M16 again. They shut up real quick when I tell them I'm getting 200 buck extra a month for an M16. Heh.

Been having fun explaining how I ended up in A Co. too. "They" told me there was a chow hall over here, haven't figured out how to get off the airfield yet. Heh.

Anyway, fuck Apache-land. It'll be nice to throw on the resume when I get out and have a shot at one of those ridiculously well paid LAR or Boeing jobs, but the day to day bullshit is not fucking worth it.

Fight for a flight slot, there's more of them than you think. The pilots respect you, you're just as dead if that thing crashes as they are, so they listen and don't treat you like a hotel bagman. Your NCO's have to use big boy rules because there's too much going on for the dumb shit. Leave the FOB and see some shit. Go for 160th, apparently they're hiring everybody that isn't a complete and total fuckhead. That's who I'm going to be talking to when I get to Eustis-land, they can't do anything with you until you're school-trained.

      Flight pay.

Get issued A2CU's without having to fight a bear hand-to-hand. I'm going to start telling people that's what Apache guys have to do to get them. Leading cause of 15R deaths, oh yeah you betcha. Spread the word, tell your freinds. Be crazy to see it show up on You-Tube or something.

Loot. I got a BLACKHAWK!11ONE1!!OMFG! SERPA M9 holster, the paddle style clip, belt clip, molle adapter, and lanyard just for helping out our supply guy a little. Various other stuff carefully bargained for. I'm stuck with an M16, but fuck it. I've got flight pay, A2CUs and I'm happy.

We get food delivered to us by the WOJG's because we usually have too much shit going to waste time at the chow hall.

Flying is a fucking blast. It's hard to have that much fun with your pants on. Serious.

Pop smoke, get out of Apache-land. They don't love you. It's an abusive relationship. Call Army-One-Source, they'll tell you the same thing. Honest.

They give me a little shit for being an Apache guy, but that's normal, they're happier to have somebody that's been around ACFT already and is a step above the 'tards we usually get from E Co. for door gunners.

    • ah64mech13

Seriously, It's better here, we have cookies. And Rip-Its. And pretty much whatever the hell else we really want and can find an honest-ish reason to have. Hopefully soon we'll be installing the MCG/MCU's, Micro Cooling Garment/Micro Cooling Units. They're a vest that goes under your armor that pumps chilled saltwater, I think, keeps you cool in flight. Really, we have them. How fucking cool is that? AC that we wear.

      And cookies. And Rip-Its. smiley0.gif

Seriously though, I got sick of the one up games and bullshit too. Good buddy of mine was kicking ass and taking names and said fuck it and got out after some bullshit just like that.

Made his 5 about a year ago, we went out to NTC, and our E-7's mom died again(really, how many fuckin parents does this guy have? He's on like his 4th mother that's 'died', it's some bullshit. He's been gone for about a month and a half already.) Anyway, he's still a new NCO, and he ends up running the whole platoon for most of NTC, and doing a pretty fuckin good job, shit didn't start to fuck up until Ruiz the turd got back. Meanwhile in the rear, we got another 5 at the time in, 6 now, we get back from NTC and everybody sucks up to this fucker too and steps all over my buddy's dick, like he doesn't know shit. I'd have said fuck that too, but I had an Arms Room vault to hide in until we got out here.

    • ah64mech13

And now back to our thrilling story:

Guess who's going to Iraq? Fuck me, it's tour #3. Yay. So I make the best deal I can, which is suck it up and deploy on just a bit over a month's notice (fun conversation to have with the wife, I highly reccommend it. "Hey honey, you know that year you were planning on spending with me? Yeah, Top said fuck that, I'm leaving mid March. Love you, I'll be at the bar, bye!") bring my damned Arms Room with me (I'm so glad to be rid of that, fuck resposibilities are lame!), help get Maintenance unpacked, set up and somewhat unfucked, since I'm one of the very few that went with last time, then I can pop smoke and go be a door gunner.

It took a few reminders of deals that were made and agreements that have to be kept, lest I go crazy and start fires and firing (because another year with Maint. platoon really would have driven me batshit crazy) , but the right people were reminded and many tragedies were averted.

Now I'm down there, just kinda hanging out until I get the rest of the flight physical done, gear issued and the classroom shit done. The M9 is no guarantee, they're still trying to figure out a weapon for me. Still trying to figure out just what they can and can't let me do too, they're used to get retards from E Co., not guys that've been doing aircraft work for the last 8 years.

Helped out on a PMD the other day. Have you ever seen the guts of a Blackhawk? The Apache is pretty straight forward, easy to take care of and understand, at least our side of the house. Theirs looks like it was designed by a Martian on shrooms. There's 7 servos above the pilots. How are there 7 servos when there are only 4 directions? And their mixer is Depot level to fuck with it. And they have 3 hyd pumps/reservoir, but they won't admit that the pumps have a reservoir built in.

And I think I'm gonna get a profile that says I need to be drunk when working on their main rotor head, otherwise my brain will melt. It does the same shit ours does, but in such fucked up ways that it doesn't make sense.

Who says Iraq isn't fun? It might be really gay, but there's still a little bit of fun here and there that they haven't been able to find and kill.

      BSKP.

Re-upped near the end of the last tour, Nov. '08, for Tango. My school date then was April '10. Yep. I was supposed to be in "Even Uncles Sam Thinks It Sucks" land about 3 weeks ago.

Problem is, our former Career Counselor was a sack of crap and a shady motherfucker. He was fired just a bit after we got back and destroyed or took with him any tracker he might have had. New CC never even met him, and was building his trackers and whatever from scratch. I wasn't even on his radar, so what happens next isn't his fault.

Dec. '08, a week before Christmas block leave, I get a fun email from ATARRS. Or AATAAARS. Or whatever their fucking acronym is. That school I've been waiting 15 months for? Yeah, not so much. The stop move went out, and guess who's name wasn't on the special people's memo? If you said this asshole, you'd be right.

A few loud "WTF, Over?"s and I finally got some answers.

Fun fact #1: The new soonest school date they can get me is Feb '11.

Fun fact #2: Our battalion, maybe the whole brigade, is short as hell on people. We've got enough to pull off the mission, but it's gonna hurt for some more then others. (Fuck you HHC and E Co, you the horse you rode in on and your 8 hr. days and weekends off. Scum.) I'm not bitter. No, really.

Good god no, haven't seen a work order for anything yet. The only stuff PC does up work orders for, that I've seen, is AGSE, AGPUs, and TMDE stuff, and that's just to get the people outside the unit to work on it. We've done a couple of 125's, a XMSN, and an aft fuel cell, maybe some other shit, we just pull the bird in and get to work.

Don't really care about it now, moved over to A Co. 2-1 for a door gunner's slot. Been just hanging around and helping with whatever the fuck, but I start the academics shit on the first.

      In reply to your_funeral, #13:

Got a question from a buddy of mine on SomethingAwful.com about Ranger school, thought I'd take some initiative and see what you could tell me to tell him about it:

Dude, I don't know shit about being a reservist going to fool school. I wouldn't expect to go while on educational delay, that's for sure. I do know that being something other than combat arms does not preclude you from going. That has long since changed. Hell, I'm sending my CBRN (NBC) Recce platoon leader this weekend. I also have a real stud in my MP platoon that I'll probably send as soon as I can put E-5 or Corporal on him. That said, it's very much dependent on the command. The 82nd places huge emphasis on Ranger school, simply because of the level of leadership we expect from everyone involved in an Airborne operation. We are lightfighters and meant to live and die on our feet, and Ranger school is a perfect school for that. Unless there was some extremely special circumstance, you simply cannot be an Infantry company commander here without a tab. Head to an armored division, and I guess the tabs would be a little more rare. Not sure because I've never been anywhere but Bragg really.

All I can say is to ask. Be the squeaky wheel. I see no need for an Airborne Lawyer (never heard a cadence about them...), but hunger is half the battle--both before and at the school!
