So hey, I wasn't originally going to post anything 'cause this weekend's been a little difficult for me. I also didn't post Finnish Friday because of the same reason.

Sure, I've powered through Halo missions and all and been excited about that, but... ehh. My real life relationships aren't doing that great, and today... or well, yesterday, November 12, Finland celebrated Father's Day. And that date's always... difficult. My relationship to him is... complicated. He only calls me when he's drunk, and how he treats women and talks about women... *sighs*

So yeah. I always get a little moody around this time of the year. All the ads and all are like... a slap on the face. :') And social media's been all about this for some time now.

But yeah today's mostly been a day when I should've just kept quiet apparently, hence I pondered about posting anything. But ehhh, I needed to vent and since I don't go to DA anymore, well. ᕕ( ᐛ )ᕗ

Cute, funny gifs would be appreciated?

Oh yeah, I ordered my first ever RT merch shirt... I won't tell which until it arrives! >:3

( ̄▽ ̄)/ Yeaaaah.... I did it... or well, I did it 2-3 hours ago, but the site wasn't working then.

I have also cleaned my apartment to almost mint condition! And caught up with some homework, despite the messy learning environment folders... I've still a couple of assignments to tackle, and then some project stuff.

      Anyway, yes! Errrm hi-bye! ( ̄▽ ̄)/

..yep, you guessed it. I just played through this one as well.

      Like daaaaaamn.

Next up is ODST, but I think I should clean my apartment now. (At 10pm herp.) We have an apartment inspection on 21st, and I want every corner and nook of my place to be topnotch clean. :| Hence the early start, lol.

Anyway! YAY. What a great start for the weekend!

Woahhhh, what a week! Every day I start off so slow I wonder how I ever get anything done, but I've had some productive days! And next week's going to be busy, busy, busier. But that's mostly a good thing: things are moving forward! I'm taking part in things!

Overall I'm feeling better and better on all fronts. Well, except with guys... ahaha. Just today I went to a shop and this hot dude talked to me... He was an employee and I was the only possible customer there, so I know that's why he approached me ahaha... and I got so surprised I just fled. ᕕ( ᐛ )ᕗ But yep. I am not used to any kind of attention from his type of guys, sooo... yeah.

Ahem. ANYWAY. How are you all? (~‾▿‾)~ Tell me one thing that's made you happy this week(end), yes? ^^

    • Finnish Friday: False Friends and Friendlies

( ̄▽ ̄)/ Hi, hi... it is I. And this time, with the words pronounced by myself... except for words I've pronounced in previous issues.

So this week's topic's idea is to bring your attention to some words that look the same in form (or ALMOST the same) but are pronounced differently and have a totally different meaning from each other! I also have a couple of example of words that you think you'll know their meaning and you'll be close, and also a couple that have an English-sounding pronunciation but the meaning might surprise you! (If you've followed this silly series of mine, you might still remember the words 'juu' (yeah) and 'ei' (no) having similar pronunciation to English letters U and A, respectively.)

I think the best example of false friends between Finnish and English is the word 'home'.

Now, if you put that word in the English-Finnish dictionary, you get the word 'koti' as the result - "a house, apartment, or other shelter that is the usual residence of a person, family or household."

But what about when you put that word 'home' in the Finnish-English dictionary? ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) Fancy things, I say, fancy things happen!

Spoiler: the result is mold - "a growth of minute fungi forming on vegetable or animal matter, commonly as a downy or furry coating, and associated with decay or dampness."

The next false friend is also probably familiar - the word 'on'. EN-FIN meaning is the preposition, but FIN-EN you get the present tense of the verb 'olla' = to be.

Then there's 'open'. EN-FIN, the translation is 'auki' = not closed or barred. FIN-EN, however, 'open' means "a teacher's". 'Ope' is short of 'opettaja' = a teacher.

      Now we'll move away a little from false friends to words that are actually more friendly. The next word, 'auto', I think you might guess what it relates to! YES. Vehicles! It means 'a car'. But it also appears in such words like 'automaattinen' = automatic. Another more friendly word is 'bussi' = a bus. But be careful when pronouncing [b] - if you say 'pussi', that means "a bag"... and yes, pussi is pronounced almost the same way as the English word 'pussy'. <__<;;

Ahem. This one is not quite the same in form or anything, but you might see it and wonder about it - 'kissa' (or 'kisu') = a cat. So if you hear a Finn say "kis, kis, kis" to a cat, they're not asking for a kiss - they're trying to lure the cat to come closer! (And in Swedish, this word means quite the something else.)

I think these word 'pallo' could be included here as well - it means 'a ball'. More so-called friendly words are 'sori' = "sorry" and 'idiootti' = "an idiot".

Next up is a word that was for some time an inside joke between me and a chatroom friend who passed away a couple of years ago. So a lot of people would greet each other by saying 'hai', and the 15-year old me was quite confused why people would say 'shark' to each other - until I realized it's a play on the pronunciation of the English word 'hi'. My friend, then, started greeting me with "Shark!"

And finally, a bit of a naughty word. D; Wasn't sure if I can include this here, I'll take it away if it bothers anyone ahaha....

OK, so. This word is pronounced almost the same as the English word for the number 9 (nine) - 'nain'. It is the present tense in first person singular of two verbs that look exactly the same but mean two different things, and because of the naughtier connotation, people try to avoid using the other meaning as well. I'll explain this in a bit.

The verb in its dictionary form is 'naida', which means 'to marry' or 'to fuck'. To say 'nain' can then mean 'I marry' or 'I fuck'. Because of the naughty meaning, people usually say "mennä naimisiin", which more literally means "to go into marriage".

There are plenty more examples, words that have to do with say language and nationality which are pretty easy to recognize, but I guess this entry is long enough and your minds are already in enough confusion. つ ͡° ͜ʖ ͡° ༽つ You are most welcome!

As for next week's topic - although I might do one about our rolling [r] or Finnish names, I'm open for ideas! What would YOU like to know about more? (〜^∇^)〜

PS. This is how you pronounce Nokia and sauna. Also this is how my first name, Laura, is pronounced - I don't mind the English pronunciation, I just may not realize I am being talked to. P: And I've a tendency to introduce myself with the Finnish pronunciation, ahaha.. And by the way, if your name is Lauri - that's a boy's name over here. :')

Anyway, yay thought I'd share these exciting news! (ノ◕ヮ◕)ノ*:・゚✧
